Fingerpointing Starts!

"There will be changes!" Says England Coach Flower

From our Cricket Correspondent Johnathan Rickman

July 20th 2010

On the back of England's heavy defeat Andy Flower, England's embattled head coach has said that changes were likely for the next test match next week.

Rumours are circulating that Pietersen may be left out of the side in favour of Ravi Bopara who has been showing some form lately in the domestic competitions.

Another candidate to possibly lose his place will be Alistair Cook, who has scored just 46 runs now in his last 5 innings.

However Flower was quick to comment that he did not want England to go back to the "all change policy" of predecessors and believed that players were capable of getting themselves out of the situation they found themselves in.

He was unwilling to comment on which players he had in mind but said notably: Pietersen is struggling with a thigh injury at them moment. We will need to see how that one develops.

In the meantime Australia have celebrated their great win but comments from their camp suggest that Michael Clarke may be dropped for the next test. He was twice scoreless in this match and comments that his personal life were effecting his form still circulate around him.

In my 2 match series vs Bangladesh, Morgan was the only batsmen I enjoyed batting with, averaged about 70 which is pretty good, even though it was only against Bangladesh haha

Sensational News: Pietersen Quits England Set-Up!

"I am being made a scapegoat", says Pietersen.

From our Cricket Correspondent Johnathan Rickman
July 20th 2010

As the rumblings from England's heavy defeat to Australia continue to rock the England camp, Kevin Pietersen added more fireworks to an already explosive situation when he walked out of an ECB sponsored press conference claiming he will never play for England again.

The press conference had been organised after it had been revealed that Pietersen had been "rested" from the next match, with rising star Eoin Morgan taking his place.

Sidebottom was also recalled to the squad after it was revealed Graham Onions was having treatment on a strained ankle. However the word is that Onions will be fit in time for next weeks match which England will need to win to avoid going 2-0 down in the best of five series.

However all eyes were turned to the question of Kevin Pietersen. The press conference had began normally. When questions were raised whether Pietersen himself had asked to be rested or had been told to rest Pietersen became very agitated.

He complained that he was being made a scapegoat, that other batsmen had also failed and that he felt it was unfair that he had been axed because of England's poor showing.

When ECB press secretary tried to put a halt to Petersen's off the cuff remarks saying that this wasn't what the press conference was about, Pietersen stood up, took his microphone off and walked out saying: "If I am not allowed to say what I want to say then I quit!"

England captain Andrew Strauss said that all the players had been under great stress due to the events of the last few days and that Pietersen had been under huge pressure. he was confident that Pietersen would calm down and that he expected him to be wearing an England shirt again in the near future.

Andy Flower, who has managed the volatile Pietersen well since taking charge said that he thought Pietersen had said many things at the heat of the moment.

"However", he said, "you can't force a player to play for England. They have to want it and there are plenty of others who want it."

ECB chairman Geoff Miller was unhappy at Pietersen's behaviour and has said an inquiry would be launched to see whether disciplinary action would be necessary.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting didn't want to comment on the exact circumstances but did say that he felt for Pietersen as he knew what it was like to be put under huge pressure to perform every-time. "Pietersen's is a class player. We all have bad spots. He will come through. He has too much talent not to.

Michale Clarke has held onto his spot in the Australian squad despite his poor personal contribution in Australia's victory.

Weather forecast 2nd Ashes Test 24th to 28th July 2010

Weather forecast for the coming days at Edgbaston, Birmingham

The weather is set to have a negative effect on the coming second test at Edgbaston starting this Thursday. Officals are warning of a late start although the picture looks brighter as the match proceeds.
Many will be wondering why the ECB agreed to hold the first two test matches at Birmingham. The ECB PR spokeswoman, Sheila O’Leery, said that the sponsorship deal with software company Codemasters meant they were tied to the two Edgbaston tests as part of that deal and that it was impossible to change things. The ECB did let us know that they would be reviewing the agreement with Codemasters for future test series.

Meh can't get the picture to fit!!!!
