England in India - Oct to Jan 2012/13

Our bowling this time can be expected to deliver after a poor effort at Mumbai. Indian spinners will at some point or the other find success against the English batsmen. And with Anderson getting that excellent reverse swing yesterday, Zaheer and Ishant can generate probably even better reverse swing than that (they know the SG ball better than England's bowlers). Seeing the way Anderson rattled India in that final session, Zaheer is always known for bringing India back into games by getting handful of wickets in the final sessions when the ball reverses.

Right now, I would say the game is 55-45 in England's favor.

What pace do Zaheer bowl at?

Won't get much reverse at that pace IMO

Zaheer has done it numerous times before on Indian pitches with the SG ball.

That last ball that got Dhoni's wicket should encourage Ishant and Zaheer. Hope Zaheer gets back his love story with left handed openers, and gets Cook out early. Getting Cook early will set England back a bit. He has been the major thorn for India this series. Him and Pietersen for cheap, and India have a real chance of taking a first innings lead.

Good innings from Dhoni... Was particularly happy with the way he batted with the tail enders, farming most of the strike and not doing what Gambhir did in Mumbai.

Finn was highly unlucky to get only one wicket in that innings. I thought he bowled really well. In particular, his battle with Sachin was wonderful to watch. Although he somewhat lost control after tea, overall he was constantly probing. He got the ball to move just enough and his bouncer was extremely effective.

If India don't pick Cook up, we are most definitely going to be dead. And seeing the way these two are batting so far, doesn't look optimistic at all for India.

I'm sure they'll get Compton. He hasn't looked impressive in the past two tests, and isn't looking impressive in this one either. Cook is in good nick.

I really hope Zaheer can reverse this ball though. The England batting - with Cook, Pietersen, and Prior looks dangerous. Trott and Bell, though they haven't done much this series, are also damn good.

I said he won't get much reverse swing at that pace. That does not mean he won't get it. It meant he will not get it big like in a lot of swing because reverse swing the faster you bowl the more the ball reverses. So if you get in the 140's you will get it big eg. Akram vs England 92 WC final type of big or Dale Steyn vs India where he moved it a long way.

At the very high speeds obtained by bowlers, the air layer is compressed to only a few millimetres thick. This thinness makes the protruding hand-stitched seam of the cricket ball a big deal in the ball?s aerodynamics. Manipulating this boundary layer can be used to suck the ball in different directions. Reverse swing needs one side to be rough. Turning the rough side of the ball forward creates turbulent flows on both sides. The seam deflects the turbulent air away from the ball, thickening the boundary layer, and resulting in earlier separation.

Just google for science behind balls, Its very interesting.

How the hell can you drop Cook? And what was Pujara doing there in first place? That's Sehwag's position if I am not mistaken.

Bad match to underperform and drop chances, only one Test left after this one.

Good start from England, a few more runs from India than I'd have liked but not that many more. England are progressing well, but it's still a long way to go and England have to bat last so they'd surely want a 75+ lead minimum and 400 is a long way off. Even then anything can happen.

Bit surprised India persisted with their seamers so long, Cook may not look too vulnerable against the spinners but get at the rest of the batting and maybe Cook will feel the pressure. England have brought back Bell, Trott is out of form and if the leftie makes KP his bunny once more then that exposes Patel and the rest, albeit Prior looks at ease and if this pair go on much longer I might consider promoting Prior and he'd get a longer rest after he's batted.

Problem is India's bowler and the ability with the new ball. SA knocked a dent in England with the new ball in that series.

Being a fan of India, cricket wastes too much of my time for them to be performing like this. I think I'm gonna go in hibernation and stop following Indian cricket for now. G'luck to the other supporters! I've had enough, and I don't particularly enjoy taking it in the rear unlike Indian players match after match - especially the bowlers.

I'm worried about batting last. To win this I reckon we need a lead of minimum 200 in the first innings. Long way to go...
