England in India - Oct to Jan 2012/13

Recalling Vijay doesn't make a whole bunch of sense to me, Mukund out did him in almost every single game leading up to the selection meeting, whatever though, not like he's going to get a game with Rahane ahead of him.

My XI:

Sehwag
Gautam
Pujara
Sachin
Kohli
Yuvraj/Vijay
Dhoni
Bhajji/Ashwin
Zaheer
Ojha
Ishant

Ok, so Harbhajan Singh is back:lol
He is in the team through the "Dhoni's best friends quota:p" - Raina out-Harbhajan in:facepalm
If we wanted a back up spinner, Murali Kartik or Mishra would have been better options than Harbhajan who is in horrible form with the ball.

Harbhajan makes sense as third spinner tbh. The selectors hate Kartik (for God knows what reason) and Mishra hasn't impressed in all his chances. And we don't want to pick Chawla for Tests now do we? Who else is left after those 3? Rahul Sharma, Jadeja, Powar? Or someone uncapped like KP Appanna or Aushik Srinivas?

Raina out makes sense too.

Why Vijay? Mukund has done really well in the games that he has played recently. And also, Shikar Dhawan has also been in very good form in recent times. Vijay has just come back to form with a double hundred in a recent game, and he immediately gets in?

Rest of the decisions don't surprise me, and are in fact good ones. Raina getting the boot is good, Harbhajan as the third spinner is not a bad option, and Rahane being retained and more so as a middle order batsman is good too. If need be, Rahane can be promoted as opener.

Raina's exclusion makes complete sense, but Harbhajan's selection is just a very stupid decision, England anyways has problems with spinners, if Harbhajan gets a game, and if he does well, he will again be given ample of opportunities because of his experience and reputation,
Ashwin and Ojha are a good spin bowling duo and should be given their space instead of throwing in Harbhajan in the mix every now and then.
Ojha and Ashwin are our best test spinners at the moment, and if we need a back up spinner, we should pick an in form player, Murali Kartik is the best option in that case, and Mishra's recent performances haven't been that bad either, Harbhajan has been horrible, he shouldn't be anywhere near the test squad.
I feel sad for Murali Kartik, he deserves to be in the test team, can't understand why he is ignored all the time.

I thought Dhoni hated Harbhajan and was the sole reason that he got dropped? Change the story to suit the situation, nice.

What? Who said Dhoni hated Harbhajan? and when did i say that Dhoni was the reason behind Harbhajan's axing? why don't you look at Harbhajan's performances in recent years, I would rather say that Dhoni was the only reason why Harbhajan was persisted with for so long despite of being mediocre in the last couple of years. And his comeback is a big joke, he has shown no signs of improvements since the time he was dropped.

Never in my post did I say you said those things...

As a neutral i'd agree here. Have seen Kartik bowl in England alot over the past 4-5 years & it has always puzzled me how he hasn't played more international cricket. Especially since Kumble retirement & Harbhajan's decline.

Personally i think he is better left-arm spinner than Ojha.

Think it's too late with Murali Karthik now, he's what 36 already? I know Harbhajan isn't a whole lot younger, but you could still argue that he has a few years left in him(given he does well with what should be limited opportunities here on in).

I don't think Harbhajan will get picked over Ashwin/Ojha. I think he's just there as a backup, incase of injury. If he does get picked over those 2, that would be pretty sad.

And yes, Kartik is brilliant. I don't know why he doesn't get picked, I've stopped being annoyed about it and have just accepted it for what it is.

Murali Kartik is done and dusted. Don't see him come back into the Indian side. He has done something to irk the people at the top. No selection committee wants to have anything with him.

Hope bowlers like Harmeet Singh and Aushik Srinivas come up the ranks well and compete for a place. Our spin cupboard is bare, and we need to find options soon enough. The fact that we have gone back to Bhajji for the third spinner slot since we have no other options, is highly discouraging. Chawla, Rahul Sharma, Mishra don't inspire hope.

I can only hope the plan is to not play Swann and Panesar at the same time to avoid injury.

I'm hoping the toils of the bowling will persuade, nay convince, England to abandon any idea of playing three seamers. Panesar and Patel's 6/108 may have not been the most convincing, but if they aren't in tune with the concept of horses for courses by now then they may as well concede the series 0-4 and go home now. Of course the biggest problem will be the batting like it was in UAE against Pakistan, but no need to make their batting easy as well.

I'd like England to go with :

Cook - 119
Compton - 1, 64no
Trott - 56
Pietersen - 23
Bairstow - 118
Prior - 51
Patel - 1/95, 104, 1/40, 60, 3/44
Bresnan - 3/59, 33no, 1/37
Swann - 3/90, 6, 0/19
Anderson - 19, 2/65, 2/20, 5no, 1/40
Panesar - 3/64

I expect Bell will probably play though. England bowlers have taken 23 wickets which probably should tell you a bit about how they will fare, albeit shorter matches. That XI accounts for 20 of the wickets taken and is about as strong a batting line up to include Patel as England are likely to field.
