Borthwick was absolutely dreadful and just whom India needed to showcase their art of explosive batting in the middle overs, in spite languishing at 25-2 after 10 overs.
I wasn't far wrong when I said if India were 50/3 they'd be in a strong position after 30 overs. OK I couldn't have foreseen they'd be a lot better than 131/4 or whatever I said, but it was predictable.
My million dollar question however is -
Why is Samit Patel in the playing XI as an 'all-rounder' when he gets to bowl just 10 odd deliveries of pies?
England are wrapped up in batting, seemingly oblivious that you need bowlers to contain the opposition by taking wickets and not conceding runs. The fewer wickets you take, the less the control, the bigger the total. India winning with near 10 overs to spare was no fluke, England lost control and the magic trump was simply their fourth and fifth bowlers this time. There weren't enough runs to defend, England didn't bat their 50 overs or even close, but Borthwick, Patel and Bopara bowled 11.1-0-86-0 in a match where England were trying to defend a total not even three times that.
England will again look at the batting, with some justification this time, but the pick of their bowlers this series is Finn with 6 wkts @ 34.33, the rest taking their wickets at 45.00+
England may not have scored enough runs or coped with spin, but the bowlers have taken just 15 wickets in FOUR ODIs, you might expect that in two. England aren't even inconveniencing the Indian batsmen.
Patel isn't the answer, if he is I'd hate to think what the question is. If he's to be our number seven in overseas World Cups then he'd better do better than his 72 runs @ 24.00 and 1 wkt @ 125.00. Even as a sixth or seventh bowler he'd not be up to much, at seven he'll struggle to be of sufficient impact with the bat. You need more BALANCE in ODIs than Tests, no good trying to make someone into something they're not. How come Rashid is forgotten about altogether? And why does it have to be a spinner all-rounder anyway?
Bopara hasn't fared much better, 19.00 average with bat and 10 overs for 68 runs conceded and no wickets taken.
