England in Sri Lanka March-April 2011/12

It speaks volumes to you that Prior, averaging 45, comes in in front of a man on debut?

I think you read way too much into everything.

With regards to Patel I feel that if he bats 4 for Notts he ought to be able to stick around against an attack that isn't massively threatening. We need to make sure we're bowled out in this innings not giving wickets away.
Obviously Trott is the key. If he stays in England win.
New ball due soon so we'll have a better idea in 10/15 overs time.

Nope, a batsman is in the side to bat and any batsman worth his sult would be insulted by being effectively demoted. If there was nothing to be read into it it wouldn't have happened ;)

It speaks volumes you are jumping to the defence of Patel, plays for Nottinghamshire, and that's your domestic team ;)

We need to keep this up, grind their attack into submission so they are the ones doubting they will win. We can't afford to get complacent, reaching 250/5 or even 270/5 will still leave work to be done so the two at the crease need to pretend they are the last pair and everything rests on them. They need to think in terms of one of them being at the crease at the end, whichever way it goes.

England have won this now for sure. 122 Runs needed and Trott has looked fantastic. Great win for England and will definitely silence the critics

I'm 90% sure there will be 2 or 3 quick wickets at some point during this chase. The question is whether we can survive it.
No way is this anywhere close to being in the bag.

Rubbish, we have not won yet "for sure" or otherwise. Two quick wickets which is possible in any match and we're still needing about 100 runs with four wickets left.

Even at 270/4 the game wouldn't be won "for sure", you may be convinced we've won but that isn't the same thing and along the lines of Liverpool fans talking up winning two trophies with two games yet to be played.

Well tbh your lower order is better then your top order and when your top order has fired I am sure your lower will continue too. Broad Swann both are in good batting knick hence I posted about your win :p

Damn Rohit, stop jinxing. :p

I take it you're a Scouser then? ;)

Super hundred from Trott. Exactly what England needed and a ton of real character.

Anyone know how many 4th innings hundreds there have been at Galle

Well you've just jinxed Prior out, another sweeper swept up. Now Trott is the main man with support from non-batsman Patel, and Broad, Swann and the non-combatants Anderson and Panesar.

I'd laugh if Panesar scores a dozen or more and wins the game for all the stick he's got in this match.

Nope, but according to my source there have been 19 Test matches there and the touring side have won just four times. Highest run chase achieved is 96/0, that doesn't necessarily mean sides haven't scored more, just not successfully.

Six hundreds of the 36 previous hundreds have come in the 2nd innings so won't take too long to work out if 3rd or 4th in the match. 11/12 Jayawardene 105 in the 1st Test, 2nd innings is the only previous 4th innings hundred and they lost

Cook, Dilshan and three aussies scored hundreds in the 3rd inings of the match of the six batsmen out of the 36 not scored in a side's 1st innings at Galle

HowSTAT! Ground Centuries

4th innings totals

vs NZE 97/98 : n/a
vs AUS 99/00 : n/a
vs PAK 99/00 : n/a
vs SAF 00/01 : n/a
vs ENG 00/01 : n/a
vs IND 01/02 : Sri Lanka 6/0 (won)
vs WIN 01/02 : Sri Lanka 6/0 (won)
vs ZIM 01/02 : Zimbabwe 79 (lost)
vs ENG 03/04 : England 210/9 (drew)
vs AUS 03/04 : Sri Lanka 154 (lost)
vs SAF 04/05 : South Africa 203/3 (drew)
vs ENG 07/08 : n/a
vs IND 08/09 : Sri Lanka 136 (lost)
vs PAK 09/10 : Pakistan 117 (lost)
vs NZE 10/11 : New Zealand 210 (lost)
vs IND 10/11 : Sri Lanka 96/0 (won)
vs WIN 10/11 : n/a
vs AUS 11/12 : Sri Lanka 253 (lost)

So Sri Lanka have posted the highest winning 4th innings total (96/0) and losing (253) England should post the highest 4th innings total at Galle, whether winning or losing. Trott could become the first batsman to score a hundred in a successful 4th innings chase.

We just make it so easy for them. Giving away wickets rather than supporting the in batsman.
The lower order need to play sensibly and support Trott.
