England in Sri Lanka March-April 2011/12

So, 9 innings to work out how to play in these conditions. As long as we have 4 warn up matches in India then we should be fine.

Strauss did really well under intense pressure today, but he will, and should, be dissapointed with the cut which got him out as he had batted very well until then. Cook has looked fantastic today, rock solid defence and played sensible scoring shots.

Have to also say, Lakmal looks a very poor bowler, I'm not joking when I say he wouldn't get in the Lancashire team.
Bring back Vaas I say :p

I would insist on playing the ODIs and mickey mousers before the Tests, add that to a warm up game or two and they'll be as ready as they'll ever be.

But don't be surprised if 10-12 of the current squad tour India

I will be the first one to criticize English team under SC conditions when they falter but what today they did is showed their actual talent and the skills executed were perfect :thumbs

Alastair Cook really is playing a top class innings here although 77 is nothing but the recent performances of England make that 77 run score look like a 150. England really hold this match now as Sri Lanka won the first match on their bowling skills of Lakmal and Hearth who have looked okish today. So if England post a 100 odd lead they will be chasing a 100 odd total for sure :cheers

Looks like a good day to have followed it online rather than sat in front of the TV! Still, not going to criticise in the slightests. Good to see some application shown and far rather that than scoring at a quicker rate but being bowled out inside 50 overs again.

Still a lot of work to do to get into a match winning position but a very good effort so far.

Good day for England, though can't afford to undo it all tomorrow. Got to bat all day tomorrow as well, then we should have a lead of 130 or so, then maybe bat till lunch on Day 4, lead of 200, then declare. That would be the ideal, need a minimum lead of 100 though.

Another instance where hotspot would've provided conclusive evidence. I reckon it caught Cook's glove, but since Sri Lanka had one go their way, it should even up with a not out here.

Reasonable start with the bat so far and certainly our best performance of the winter.

Gutted for Cook missing out after batting so long. Platform has been built though, one middle order success please!

Good application so far from the batsmen, let's hope the middle order can buck their trend and continue the innings on. I'm sure I've said before that a lot rests on the top order, if the top 2-3 succeed then generally England make a decent fist of batting.

See how long Pietersen lasts, what odds a quick 20-30 and out? We may be "on top" but we're not in front which is what matters, and we're definitely not in front by enough (yet/at all) so let's wait and celebrate if/when we're 100 runs better off than we are now, even then it would only be job half done

This Pietersen innings has been a long time coming. Sure, he is prone to hitting a bad shot, but there have been a few times where he's found some un-KP ways of getting out as well. However, more than anyone else, KP will get forward and strike the ball back down the ground. Needless to say, it's a far better method than sweeping everything off the stumps.

Fair point about the KP warning. If you set the field for a right handed batsman and he becomes left handed as you run in you're entitled to stop the delivery.

Game set and match England. I don't think many really expected this kind of a comeback here. I must say I enjoy England getting whooped, but oh well :p. Ideal situation for KP really, after a good start. I expect them to get at least 500 here, and SL are gonna struggle big time even though they have good batsmen for these conditions. The lead's just going to be too big, and there's too much time left in the game.
