England National football team thread

Argh. 6 months ago, people were happy with the idea of just going with youth, safe in the knowledge that we're not gonna win it. Germany did it in the last tournament, they looked fresh and vibrant and will surely be stronger for it this time.

Meanwhile, in the next 6 months we're trying to work out how to coax someone who retired back into the England team? Move on guys, his time has passed, England messed up, we'll all just have to deal with that :(

Yea well 6 months ago, we had a full-time manager and that was a safe plan.

But to be fair at the same time, their was a core base of senior players such as Terry, Rio, Cole, Gerrard, Parker, Lampard, Bent for eg, that was always going to be in the reckoning, along with the talented youth.

Currently injuries again to key senior and young stars is threatening to mess up plans and with no full-time manager yet so close to EURO who can really fully devise a clear cut plan is a big problem.

So in a way i guess this is why recalling Scholes is an inciting option once more, since we know what he would bring to the table for EURO 12.

Maybe the full youth influx now has to occur during W/Cup 2014 qualifiers.

I think Inter Milan when Italian football was big was probably in the same ballpark. I fully agree, one bad job in his decades of management. If anything it highlights how good he's been?

Moreover he wasn't exactly given a long time at liverpool to rebuild a squad which was not in great shape.

Look at the money spent by Daglish (admittedly a large chunk of it came from selling torres) and look at the current league position. If Hodgson was still in charge and had the same back both financially and in other aspects I think they'd be in a similar situation.

But no let's crucify a successful man over numerous years based on him not somehow succeeding with little to no chance of doing so in a 6 month spell in typical daily mail style.

Which players make up a lot of the television media...

Yep, ex Man U (slate any club near them and build undue pressure) and Liverpool players (slate him because he's not the man you want, you want King Kenny!) He never really stood a chance Hodgson. But I do like the idea that one short and ultimately poorly matched job in his entire career and he's apparently tainted. It's a good thing all our other England managers (and the other candidates) have had nothing but continuing success as managers...

I was saying this to someone the other day. Smalling is a better centre back than him at the moment, and probably a better right back too. I do think these important formative years of his career are being ruined by Man U.

If you look at the best centre-backs in England, they all benefitted from a few years between 17-23 where they started consistently at centre-back. They developed the experience to become the commanding centre-backs that they grow into in their prime.

rubbish. A failure at one club overshadows his whole career because it means he can't handle pressure?

Liverpool fans never wanted or took to him. he had key players out of form coupled with off field shenanigans and the shadow of Daglish over him.

He never really stood a chance.

Ye the critique that Samuels and other reports that have been pushing against Hodgson does come across misplaced inertia towards his record.

Facts is after Redknapp he is the best qualified candidate and if Redknapp doesn't get it, i personally could live with Roy getting it.

He's better qualified than Harry haha, by a rather large sum of trophies and international experience...

----------

Read BBC Sport - Harry Redknapp quashes Tottenham slump talk and tell me it doesn't sound awfully like he's taking the job?

Also that he may be doing a Keegan, god knows what he's on when he starts the whole "king is dead" rubbish.

I'm sure Harry will take the job. It's a sad indictment of English football that he's the best available.
Spurs slump is also directly linked to the speculation imo.

i'm not so sure.

They created a lot against us 2nd half, should probably have beaten stoke and were playing well against united until they conceded. I didn't watch the arsenal game, but let's be honest losing at the emirates isn't exactly embarrassing

When they were on a run they were getting results without playing well at times and catching all the breaks/getting the run of the ball.I think people got carried away with their title chances. Now they aren't catching the breaks people are getting carried away in the opposite direction.

Yes, loads of breaks we were catching what with the 3 goals ruled out for offside that were on by metres, the absolute robbing at Stoke and the fact we got given nothing for a few weeks.

We've actually had more breaks recently, we've just not been able to take our chances... still facts are never important ;)

Losing at the Emirates isn't embarrassing, but being 2-0 up with 5 minutes to go before half-time and managing to be 3-2 down 5 minutes after the break is pretty shocking.

Essentially, it is poor that a manager with one trophy is apparently the best we have. Hodgson is just as qualified (more so really), but I'm sure Harry is taking the job.
