I'm reluctant to make this point because on the whole, I think foreign players do benefit the league, but "english" grit? 4 english players started for chelsea, 1 was off in 25 minutes and another almost cost them the tie with a piece of stupidity.
I actually think this playing into the idea of being gritty types is one of englands problems. rooney, lampard, gerard, scholes, beckham, ferdinand did not need to turn up with a "rah rah, all for one boys!" attitude which results in them running around like headless chickens, they are class players, they should have gotten on with being classy.
people often said there are too many superstars in englands team and they all play for themselves, I really don't see that, I think they all play far too much for the team. I distinctly remember several occassions at the world cup where english players known for taking on their man or belting a goal in opted for a square pass, such was the terror of being seen to value oneself over the national team. rooney should be getting preferential treatment and playing with a bit of ego, he's one of the best strikers in the world for gods sake, what's the point in having him spend the match tracking back just because it makes the team seem gritty?
always said it but the best manager for england would have been fergie, and that's not just because ferguson is an obvious choice as the best manager ever. he'd have them ignoring the media hype, telling the journo's where to go and have got them playing for themselves, not some overblown patriotic ideal.
not that I'll mind one bit if they turn up and repeat all those mistakes again obviously
