England National football team thread

Liverpool fans are about the only people on the planet who don't rate Roy, and that's because he wasn't King Kenny.

I can guarantee if you'd given Hodgson the money that was given to Kenny you wouldn't have Carroll up front for 30M and Downing on the left-wing for 20m...

Kenny has spent an incredibly large amount of money and delivered two cup runs...

At least Woy has international experience.

I'd take the hive mind opinions of 'Pool fans with a pinch of salt, considering how notoriously deluded and fickle a majority of them are.

Would've been nice to see 'Arry turned on by his bumboys in the press but that'll probably happen at a later point now.

Yeah I still fail to see how a man with one trophy, and has literally left every club he's left in chaos was the apparent front runner by such a long way.

I'm all for Woy :D

My main concern with Harry is his total lack of tactical nous. I'm thinking he's just lucked into a decent squad this year.
During the last world cup he was doing punditry for the TV and he was asked what he would do to change things tactically at half time. I think his response was,
"Get 'em to knock the ball in to big Crouchy and remind 'em they're playing for the three lions". It's the Kevin Keegan school of tactics.

Also getting Hodgeson over Harry saves the FA ?10m. Obviously Spurs fans are happy too ;) (as am I as it means Spurs won't be stealing Moyes)

I'm actually not that happy. He seemed like he was leaving, and I was kind of set on getting Moyes ;)

Harry has no idea what he's doing tactically, it's overlooked far too often and he does luck out as you put it. Remember Bale? The guy he couldn't get in his team. Was on the verge of leaving, and then bang, an injury forced him to play him at left-wing and he couldn't leave him out.

Sandro wasn't playing, then injuries kicked in and he looked awesome (injuries again kicked in unfortunately, but I still think he can be an incredible holding midfielder).

Vdv clearly a Levy piece of business. In the last month or two the team has just looked clueless and when they lined up today I actually thought we might win because we had the right players in the right positions again. Lennon was a big loss when he got injured, but instead of instructing someone else to play out wide and just keep the width, he decided that everyone should just go play behind the striker.

He's been playing two holding midfielders against worse teams where there's no need. He took away our natural width that had been working early season because he seemed to think we needed 30 people in the middle of the park. He stifled Modric by removing all his outlets. He often sets us up with no one up front because Adebayor drifts out-wide.

Pretty much his entire thing is "motivating players."

Another example is how poor we've been against the sides with equal or better squads than us. Not just beaten, but spanked by all of them. An exception being a Chelsea side in the league who offered nothing while we failed to attack them, then a Cup game where they had their confidence rising again and we again got spanked.

Indeed, didn't he do pretty damn well when he was on International duty last time round? And he did well with Inter Milan - the Italian League is a damn sight closer to the International style than ours is. I'm actually quite up for him getting the job; he couldn't possibly do worse than anyone else. Let's just hope he doesn't have an umbrella, eh? ;)

Oh yes, Keegan: the last time the whole country and its dog, as well as the entire press were 100% behind a man for the England job - and we all remember how that ended up, eh? ;)

I'm not Hodgson's biggest fan but I'd rather him than Redknapp or Pearce. But Redknapp is supposedly the "people's choice" though, despite everyone I know saying he isn't the right man for the job.

Hodgsons trophy list and relative successes:

7 Swedish league titles with two different clubs including taking Halmstad from relegation candidates to league champions in a season.

Took Switzerland to the 1994 World Cup from a group containing Italy and Portugal with just one defeat in the campaign. Qualified comfortably for 1996 and then left before the tournament to take Inter Milan. When he left, Switzerland were ranked 3rd in the world. They had never, and have never been as high.

Took over an Inter team that had been struggling with the intention of rebuilding. Finished 6th (an improvement on their last two finishes) and also a UEFA cup final which they lost. The next year he left with Inter in 3rd and they went on to finish 2nd.

Went to Blackburn, who after finishing 13th he took to 6th and a UEFA cup spot. However he notably was involved in spending 7.5m on Kevin Davies (ironically turned out to be a half decent player) and was sacked with Rovers bottom.

Went to Copenhagen and took a side that had finished no higher than 8th in their last two years to an instant league title. Went to Udinese.. was a disaster for all parties.

Was almost in charge of Finland qualifying for a major tournament for the first time, missing out by 3 points.

Took over a struggling Fulham, nearly got them relegated but a good run at the end of the season saw them safe. Then with a summer to work with them took them to 7th and then followed that up with a UEFA cup final the next year.

Liverpool everyone knows about :p

Then went to WBA who had lost 13 of their last 18 games under Di Matteo. They won 5, drew 5 and lost 2 as they finished 11th (their highest ever league position). This year they continue to impress and have gone from yo-yo club to stable Prem team.

948 club games - 43% win ration.

8 League Titles.

LMA manager of the year 2010.

Now... for Harry -

Bournemouth - Got promoted... got relegated. Still, did win the old Division 3 with them.

Managed West Ham. Notoriously bought Margo Boogers and Florin Raduciou but it didn't matter because he had Joe Cole, Michael Carrick, Frank Lampard, Defoe and Rio Ferdinand come through the youth ranks. Highest finish of 5th and won the intertoto cup to qualify for Europe. Though young, it is perhaps telling that he had at his disposal five players who would go on to represent top 4 teams and 3 future Premier league winners.

Got Portsmouth promoted before falling out with Mandaric and leaving to join rivals Southampton.

Screwed over Southampton, unable to save them from relegation or establish any consistency in the Championship and went back to Portsmouth :p

Here he finally wins something, an FA Cup! Allegedly while at Portsmouth he turned down the Newcastle job claiming he has a job to do, although the chairman of Newcastle says in interview that they interviewed Harry, but had already decided to go with Keegan.

Thought not his fault, when he left Portsmouth, they were broke and endured a downward spiral.

Tottenham - Well, this is all fairly recent. Took over with Spurs struggling under Ramos as we eventually finished 8th and a league cup losing finalist. The next year he took us to our highest ever Prem finish of 4th. Followed that up with 5th and well here we are again.. in 4th, with 2 games to go and 3 places still possible to finish :)

So, that was some world class procrastination from me, and I don't expect anyone to read it haha

pretty sure a number of managers have let out a bit of a sigh knowing that harry will stay. tottenham were quite a realistic option for guys like moyes or brendan rogers, I even thought villa boas might be in with a shout. the big teams will all look abroad for their new managers (or to ex-players).

I think Roy's a really good shout though, international experience counts and he comes in with a little bit more detachment than pearce or redknapp would have. he's not quite the face of gritty ol' britannia that they would have been.

Even Redknapp's reaction smacks of wishing he'd been given the offer. If he's that desperate to do another job, then he can sod off to be honest and we'll have someone in who is committed to a long term project.

Plus Harry's probably the the only manager in the world that'll put someone like Gio Dos Santos on the bench for so many seasons. Can't believe a player that was once the toast of Europe has sunk so low because of a manager. He even came second for FIFA Young Player of the Tournament in the 2010 World Cup. I remember watching him and thinking he's gonna be big... Now look at him. Reminds me of Joaquin's fall from current Hazard-like status to an average player.

He chose Tottenham over Chelsea for playing time, and he got the opposite. Harry sure as hell can't be considered a better manager than Hodgson for this reason alone, if he became England manager maybe he could ruin Cleverley or Wilshere next?

England fans should be glad Hodgson at the reigns, though I must admit I would've enjoyed laughing at England more if 'Arry was manager and messing up his tactics!

Happy with Hodgson. It was always a close call between him and Redknapp. This entire thing i'm hearing in the media that "Redknapp was the people's" choice is certainly not the truth.

The elite media wanted Harry badly - but most fans based on what i heard since Capello resigned was very much open to both Harry or Hodgson getting it.

Now for Hodgson to deal with the issues of:

- Ferdinand/Terry playing together hopefully
- A decision of the captain. I really hope he picks Gerrard
- The tactical balance of the team for the opening two games in Rooney's absence.

Hearing some positive news that Bent will be fit, which is think is very important. So hopefully the "injury curse" that haunts England before every tournament does not take any more casualties.

Best ENG XI for France game and EURO 23-man squad IMO:

GK:

Hart, Green/Carson/Ruddy/Foster

DEF: Terry, Ferdinand, A Cole, Richards, Lescott, Baines, Walker, Jaigelka/Cahill

MID: Gerrard (captain), Parker, Young, Carrick, Barry, Milner, Lampard, Walcot
A Johnson

STR: Rooney, Bent, Welbeck, Strurridge

Certainly think England should just take two keepers. Three keepers in general always seem useless to me. In ENGs case with Rooney's absence we need an extra outfield player option cover for the first two games - instead of the third keeper who really in most world tournaments just goes as a spectator.

Hart

Richards JT RIO A Cole

Parker Carrick

Stevie G

Walcott Bent Young

Although it certainly is unfortunate that a clear talented player like Dos Santos hasn't gotten much first team action at Spurs. I think its a bit disingenuous to equate that what Harry would have done to Wilshire and Cleverley if he had gotten the England job.

Tottenham last I checked are doing well without Dos Santos playing and you could argue in Bale, Lennon, Krancjar, plus Modric and VDV who can also play on the flanks they have better options in the positions the Mexican is strong in.

Dos Santos himself IMO could have gone to another club for first team football, but he seems to like Spurs.
