England National football team thread

No his chances are harmed by not being good enough.

he's been on the bench loads of times this season when fully fit. If he can't be a guaranteed starter at a "small club" then his problem isn't being at a small club. It's being an average footballer.

Just another Joe Allen. He's just a decent passer, who is lucky enough to have his team playing to his strengths.

It's probably better if they get some tournament experience IMO. Welbeck doesn't play every minute when fit, so burnout is nonsense for him.

Welbeck was already at the 2011 under-21 tournament though. Don't think he needs to play in two such tournaments really.

Wilshire while i'd say its obvious he shouldn't play since he so key to seniors. As u say a tournament experience could in a way be useful. Germany Mesut Ozil certainly benefited from under 21 experience before his breakout 2010 W-Cup efforts.

Yeah, welbeck played in the euros in 2012 too.

I just think burnout is a weak reason, some players can play right through. I remember in Cahill's everton peak due to olympics, world cup, asia cup and confederations cup he didn't get a proper break for 3 years, nobody mentioned his lack of a break until he broke a bone in his foot, then it became a big issue.

Seems to me that the real reasons are a mixture of protection of the players and giving someone else a chance.

We know wilshere and welbeck can perform for england, so the national team doesn't learn anything from them playing. give others a chance. Burnout is a hackneyed excuse that people will just accept.

Wilshere only started playing again lately after a long lay-off. He won't be burned out at all. It's horseshit.

Yea i don't disagree. The burnout argument is a combination of what you said & fatigue of much football.

On Wilshire yea realistically he shouldn't get burned out if he played in the Under-21s. But while that tournament experience would be valuable before the world cup, its fair to say he is on another level & could probably do without playing.

Plus of course Wenger would go mad if he did play. :lol

He's played well because Utd have managed his back problems well by rotating him with Evans and Vidic.

No doubt England recalling him will fearsome tweak that up.

Yea has been rotated well, but since the turn of the year Ferdinand has played 2 games in a row very often. Currently Vidic is the one that clearly can't play often & has to be managed carefully.

If the speculation are true & Hodgson is going to make a dramatic u-turn & recall him, Hodgson could manage his games smartly too i'd say. For example vs San Marino he could be rested & then play in the important game vs Montenegro.

The media is certainly pounding it now & if Hodgson does recall him, he is going gain a lot of respect for admiting he was wrong, which much coaches don't do.

I'd also support Steven Taylor getting called up too. Too bad though the wait to see Wilshire in a competitive game is again going to be denied.

With the squad being announced thursday, i'm hoping Sir Hodgson picks this. (Fingers crossed for no new injuries in europa & premier league fixtures this weekend):

GK: Hart, Foster, Forster

DEF: Ferdinand, Dawson, Cahill, Smalling or Taylor, G Johnson, Walker, A Cole, Baines

MID: Gerrard, Carrick, Cleverley, Lampard, Parker or Osman, Young, Walcott, Lennon

STR: Rooney, Welbeck, Sturridge, Defoe

Taylor needs more games before being in contention, osman has not played well for a while. so those two are out for me.
