England National football team thread

World Cup 2014 knockout stage has exposed England's shortcomings - Roy Hodgson should be accountable - Telegraph

ENG football issues are obviously much deeper than squad selection & better tactics - but Hodgson was certainly exposed for being naive and a bit slow tactically with his decisions in the world cup.

Was giving him the benefit of the doubt, but the FA should have sacked him. ENG need a modern forward thinking coach of a Brendan Rogers/Roberto Martinez ilk, along with the much needed structural changes to the game domestically.

FA acknowledging importance of futsal as a development tool in wake of England's early World Cup departure - Telegraph

1. The FA and Premiership have to get on the same page. The Premiership doesn't give two hoots about the England National team, neither do any of these foreign owners coming in to take our teams over. Which leads nicely on to:

2. We. Need. A. Foreigner. Cap. What percentage of the Bundesliga is German? I'm guessing higher than 50%? Twist it how you like - if there are less English players frequently getting game time, there is less of a pool for the National team to choose from. There is no disputing that fact. There is also no disputing the fact that a foreign owner is more likely to shell out on a ready made star, rather than have more money pumped into youth development.

France were crap in the early 90s, they got it sorted out and won the Cup. Look at Spain. Now look how crap Germany were at the turn of the Millennium - now they have a solid young team who play exciting football and are set to dominate for years.

Am pleased that Rodwell might leave City and go somewhere he might actually play football. Top teams have got to stop taking young England players and having them rot on the bench - this doesn't just apply to City, it applies to all top teams including my own. We have bought Shaw, I want to see him playing regularly.

Stop acknowledging things and start implementing them!

England embarrassment continues post-Brazil - ESPN FC

But let's be clear about one thing: if it is indeed the "best league in the world," it is operating in what is officially the 20th best football country. That should be a matter of embarrassment for everyone connected with English football.

Amen to this. When you think about, i rather BPL become like Eredivise or Ligue 1 who actually develop proper players, than continue to basque in hyping of premier league "best league in world" if the majority of foreign club owners can't sit down with the FA to work out a way help the national team.

Its become a total farce now.

Against Italy, we attacked with no fear but our defending was just as shambolic as in the subsequent games - in which the fear factor returned in bucketloads. Yes, we should have been playing against ten men vs Uruguay but when you think of what would have happened had we come up against a Holland or... Germany... :facepalm :facepalm

Not sure what Roberto's getting at here. All we experienced was our worst World Cup exit since 1958.

England seem to be on a perennial learning curve, so perennial one would be forgiven for thinking it a flat line. In 10 wasted years since England blew their chance at Euro 2004, because familiar failings of an inability to adapt once Wayne Rooney had fractured his foot invited yet more predictable shoot-out misery, England have essentially bottomed out.

Hits the nail on the head. 1996, 1998, 2002 and 2004 we were in with a real chance - 2006 we weren't very good but put in a great performance against Portugal. Since then, it's been garbage.

Why should they? That's the problem we have - what do the foreign owners gain from the England team showing progress? Diddly...

Well yea that's the inherent problem, although TBF to the majority foreign owners none have never come out & said they don't care.

The FA simply has to call their bluff.
