Briggs Reaches 50 as Openers Dominate

Mike Haysman: What a start to a Test career from Shaun Briggs. He marks his debut with a brilliant 50.

Geoffrey Boycott: Well you can tell that this lad is from Yorkshire can't you? A terrific display of fire and agression. He looks like he can handle himself too; Chaminda Vaas was giving him a bit of banter before, but Briggs just looked him in the eye and said "Look at the scoreboard pal". What a lad.

Briggs Surges on as Baines Reaches 50

Michael Slater: As the aggressive Shaun Briggs carts the Sri Lankan bowlers to all parts, Will Baines has been quitley going about his business as he reaches a 50 on Test debut.

Mark Nicholas: It's worth a mention that these two young debutants have both opened for Yorkshire in the County Championship, so they do work well together. They seem to bat together like chalk and cheese; Briggs is the aggressor whereas Baines seems to be in the Boycott mould.

Another cruncher from Briggs.

Agony for Briggs as 100 Slips Away

Geraint Jones: Well there's an old saying that fortune favours the brave, but this didn't apply to Sean Briggs as he fell agonisingly short of his century.

Dean Jones: You have to feel sorry for him though Geraint; You scored 17 Test match centuries youself, and it does feel great to score a century doesn't it?

Geraint Jones: It certainly does, but when you fall short like Briggs did, it really is a horrible feeling. Briggs was unlucky though, he was looking well set on 96, but Chaminda Vaas bowled a brilliant delivery which apparantly brushed the edge of the bat. The umpire gave it as out, but teh Snickometer suggests otherwise.

Tea on Day 2

Mark Nicholas: Shortly after the wicket of Sean Briggs fell, the umpire called Tea, and England are in an exceptionally strong position here at Lords. How nervouse will Billy Baines be? He goes into the break unbeaten on 87, and he would dearly love to mark his debut with a 100 today. On the other hand, just how disapointed will Sean Briggs be? Well we can have a chat with now. Shaun, how does it feel to get out on 96 on debut?

Shaun Briggs: Well I won't lie, it's awful, to get so close to a hundred at Lords and then fall 4 runs short isn't very nice. I'm not that concerned about missing it though. Yes, it would have been nice to mark my debut with a 100, but I scored 96 quality runs out there, and hopefully I have shown the gaffer how I can bat.

Mark Nicholas:
I'm sure you have Shaun, but we'll let back with your team now.

Baines Moves Closer to Three Figures

Mike Haysman: Will Baines has looked so comfortable out there today; He has been so solid in defense, yet he is capable of hitting a mean boundary.

Geoffrey Boycott: Yes, he hasn't looked like getting out at all, and he really does deserve a hundred today.

Baines hits a rare boundary.

Sidson Finds the Boundary But Sri Lanka Fight Back

Mike Haysman: England's number 3 Sid Sidson hit a number of boundaries before Chaminda Vaas got his revenge.

Geoffrey Boycott: Yes, Sidson looked dangerous out there but Chaminda Vaas bowled an absolute snorter to him. It exploded off the pitch and Sidson could only glove it to Mahela Jayawardene.

Sidson looked in fine form...
