England Tour Of Australia 2013/14

Ye I was in the camp that wasn't fond of Bailey especially when he was given the T20 captaincy illegitimately. But they way he has adapted to T20 & his stunning ODI form has won me and alot of people over - except Mr Chappell clearly.

Chappell is still a smart cricket analyst but yes given his age now, he is prone to one or two crazy statements. One of his worst was when after last year under-19 world he suggested that spinner Harmeet Singh was the best spinner in the world outside of Swann. Crazy insult to Ajmal that was - Ian Chappell: Harmeet Singh and Unmukt Chand are ready for international cricket | Cricinfo Magazine | ESPN Cricinfo

I just think it's interesting to look at the comparisons. Across those two ODI teams, the yardstick for Test cricket is a curious one. Who is the best Test cricketer in the series? Is it Dhoni? Kohli? Watson? Maybe even Mitchell Johnson? I guess it's not really alarming, with both teams experiencing an exodus of top calibre players, but the point is that below this group of very competent players with the odd touch of brilliance, there are a lot of players in there that simply are below Test quality at this stage, and perhaps won't ever make it. And while I'd still argue that Australia could stand to squeeze in a Kohli or Dhoni, it is food for thought, especially when we ask ourselves why we should pick Bailey and not Maxwell or Faulkner.

regarding bailey, i haven't seen a lot of him, but what i have seen i like.

in england, in the early 2000s we selected first trescothick and then vaughan, both of whom at the time had unimpressive first class averages, based on feeling they had a very good temperament, and would respond well to international cricket (and especially in vaughan's case that his average belied an impressive technique). it worked out pretty well - vaughan's test average was 5 runs higher than his first class one.

from everything i have seen of aus, and some of the "nearly men" like hughes/khawaja, i would have bailey in my test top 6 and give him a proper run in the side. assuming all fit i think:

rogers
warner
watson
clarke
bailey
smith

is a very decent top 6.

I see Cook has now come out and said this, basically that Root could move down the order with someone else coming in to open. This begs the question why Compton wasn't chosen as part of the squad. As good a player as Carberry is, he's going to find it hard coming into the test side in this situation. It's the kind of madness that Flower doesn't normally subscribe too.

As most know Compton wasn't left out of the Ashes for cricket reasons. Its because he was critical of the selectors for stating his displeasure of being dropped.

The selectors & flower have done much great things, but there is a bit of favourtism towards certain players. A guy like Bresnan who had some serious bad games in recent months was continuously picked because he was held in high regards by Flower & co. Surely Compton deserves to be backed after just a few bad tests...

You really think he'd be in the squad if he hadn't said he was harshly treated? I disagree. He was never getting back in after they pushed him out, because the management clearly didn't want him there that much in the first place.

Just surprises me that Carberry now seems to be in pole position to open, when he only seemed to get picked because of media pressure too. Good luck to him though, he's a very good player on his day and I hope he makes the most of it. Root at 6 also makes a lot more sense with the issues we've had down there.

To be honest I can see Root opening in Brisbane and then a knee-jerk reaction if both him and Ballance fail. As a back foot player these pitches ought to suit Root anyway.

What makes you think this?

Langer backs North for Test recall

:lol JL is having a laugh.

Yes, although did you see the bowling attack Australia A sent out? Only 3 proper bowlers and 2 part timers.

So Josh Hazlewood = rested O.o

I just think if you look at players that come into the team, they tend to have come through the Lions teams and been on the radar for quite a while. The likes of Root and even Ballance (once he became qualified) followed this route for example.

Whereas with Compton, Strauss retired and the media suddenly went, 'hey, why not pick the guy averaging 100 when every other batsman in the country is struggling?' England then can't really turn him down or else it makes the Championship look pointless. But as soon as he had a bad run, he was out of the side. Who else has that happened too? Every other batsman like Bairstow and Bopara have had multiple chances, whereas Compton just seems to be the odd one out.

Well yes he didn't come through the A-team set-up like a few others. But i'm not sure personally if that's why he was axed after his few bad tests.

I still think its because he spoke out to being axed & the fact that favoritism towards certain players has been displayed by Flower especially in the past.
