England tour of South Africa 09/10

Swann >>>>>>> Hauritz. Easily!

Its interesting to note how fickle we are in our support: I remember how a lot of people on these forums were ridiculing the "ineffectiveness" of Broad and Swann during the beginning of the Ashes series and how they wished that they wouldn't be selected for the South African tour: good job they didn't get their way. Not having a go at anyone in particular and not saying that I don't do exactly the same. Just observing!:)

I've always said that Broad should be given more chances, and as for Swann, he impressed me from day one - easily better than Hauritz and Panesar. Poor ol' Monty, eh? Will he ever get another chance...

It's just great to see us taking on the No.1 team in Test Cricket and handing their asses to them!

The real ;) number 1 team ;)

One question though. Where has Swann been? I heard Nasser saying today that he had been on the tour with England in South Africa last time, yet he has only cropped up in the past year and a bit.

Good question. How old is Swann anyway?

31 in March. Got to remember though, back in 2001, when he toured SA then, he wasn't like he was now. He's a late developer, though could arguably have been playing for a couple of years now, but Monty was very good for about a year or so.

Impressive display by the English, Broad has really improved a lot since mid way through the Ashes. Swann has shown hes got the talent, didn't have the best Ashes but hes standing u and being counted again. SA certainly don't like playing the English at home.

Excellent bowling by Swann and Broad, they really bowled well, SA really struggling at home, Eng bowlers made most of the overcast conditions..

That's so frustrating - we should be spotting people like him and developing them a whole lot earlier than 30yrs old - still, he's a spinner and they can generally go longer than fast bowlers, can't they?

Yeah spinners are able to carry on well into their late thirties or even longer (One Derek "Deadly" Underwood springs to mind! Genius!)

He was spotted pretty early, you just can't force the development. In fact, it is crucial that a young spinner's value isn't rated on what he does, but what he could do when developed fully. It's a tricky thing and hard to explain, but it is really easy to break the stock ball by trying too much too early.

England have generally gone the other way with spinners and picked them before they're ready. Schofield and Rashid come to mind.
I've just finished Vaughan's book and he's pretty scathing about Panesar's lack of cricket awareness and nous as well.

Brilliant start again by england: showing signs of being ruthless! Whatever next!

Stick the boot in boys! C'mon! Cant see Ntini lasting long. Anderson bowling beautifully here! What a good bunch of bowlers we have at the moment!
