England tour of South Africa 09/10

I really hope they do go with McLaren. No chance is he a Test class player, basically the South African version of Luke Wright just without the Domestic performances. Averaging the same with the ball as Wright but in the division below and nowhere near as high with the bat. He averaged a laughable 18 for Kent in FC cricket with the bat last year. Please pick him :)

I think that's harsh on McLaren and Wright as well, strangely enough. McLaren is a bowling allrounder, whereas Wright is a batting allrounder. So although McLaren isn't going to average 35 with the bat or something crazy, he's decent enough at Number 8 in a team like South Africa. I also think he's the type of bowler who uses conditions well, so a green top could suit him really, having enough pace to cause problems when it nibbles around. I'm not saying he's going to have a long career taking 300 wickets in Tests, but he's far from useless from what I've seen/heard.

I doubt they will, they have put too much time and effort to prepare Parnell for test cricket to leave him out. McLaren is being dragged around now but he wont last long with South Africa. Firedel de Wet showed that he is a capable bowler, Parnell is a huge talent to leave out and there are 2-3 other bowlers in South Africa's domestic cricket that are ahead of him and if they really wanted another all-rounder they would choose Albie Morkel.

By not counting Kallis :p
You've got 3 bowlers and 2 batting all-rounders.

Yes and one of those batting all-rounders has a better bowling average than most of your bowler :P

Im with you on that dude....i dont know how that fool slipped through the cracks into our team. Oh wait...I do know...its the CSA's perpetual hounding about bits and pieces players being a great idea for our side.

touch-wood...if he takes a 5-for in this game I will fly to the UK and kiss you. And I dont like making 2 trips to the UK in 2 weeks! :P

Ntini is not in the squad. Parnell will make his debut unless they choose to go with McLaren.

Parnell will play,100% guaranteed. The better player of the two and has the bonus of counting as a coloured player.;) Only way mcclaren plays is if they go for an all out seam attack.

Do things like this annoy the saffa fans on here?

If they live up to the talk yes but most of the time our guys are more talk than action.

Ntini is done for, don't know why he is delaying his retirement announcement (esp after the Kolpak rumors)

Parnell for the win here, dont need an allrounder in a game you have to win. Need 20 wickets and if Steyn, Morkel, Parnell and Harris cant muster that on the supposed green pitch then I am jumping on the "South Africa are overrated" bandwagon myself

Strauss gone first ball :facepalm. Our total often seems to reflect his score.

Amazing catch first ball.

Terrible crowd, deciding test match full of excitement, hardly anyone shows up. Pathetic stuff. Even though England won the toss and batted, i wouldve though not having to watch a Kallis borefest would attract more people to the ground. Maybe they were waiting until after the toss before leaving home.

What a brilliant start to the Test for England. First off we drop one of our best performing bowlers for someone who's done nothing in International cricket for going on 18 months, even when he's been fit (Aus ODi series), then the skipper goes first ball and now Trott's gone plumb lbw. Guess we don't want to win this series after all. Now's the time for KP to shine!

Not really, just been pretty poor batting, from Trott anyway. Strauss's was just an excellent catch. Really need these 2 to dig in and make a score, desperate for KP to make a hundred in this series.

SA using our tactic I see, bowling all rounder at 8 and use a part time spinner. Would De Wet be a better option though? SA batters should be able to get the job done and Morne, Steyn and Parnell are more than capable with the bat. Speaking of which, weird that Parnell missed the new ball for a swing bowler although the opening bowlers are going well so far.
