England began the second day on a very Healthy 362-4, and on course for a decent lead in the first test. how things changed so suddenly was nothing short of remarkable, as the West Indies spinners came out to polish off England's last six batsmen in just 9.5 overs. Alec Stewart was sent straight back to the pavillion in only the third ball after playing and missing. and when Collingwood was sent packing for a duck on Sarwan's first delivery England found themselves with Hussain the only recognised batsmen and the score on a not so sturdy looking 372-6.
Simon Jones didn't last long either, hitting a couple of loose deliveries before Sarwan bowled him out in his second over of the day, leaving a capitulated looking England team teetering on the brink at 388-7. At this point hussain restored some order, doing well to keep the strike and surpassing the 150 mark.
Together Hussain and Giles grabbed the initiative to put on a 42 run partnership. But it ended when Chris Gayle trapped the England captain for LBW, and with the linchpin gone and the score at 432-8 the innings looked virtually closed. At first viewing Hussain's LBW looks outside of the line (see attachment below), but on closer inspection the ball was plumb centre and the umpire should be credited for a good decision.
Giles perished six runs later to take the score to 438-9, gough and Anderson put on a late flurry of 24 runs, before the innings closed on 462. Hussain was not happy with his teams performance after adding just 100 runs on what was a solid building ground for a good total. Hussain said:
"The lads are very down in the dressing room and understandably so. At the start of the day we were talking of getting to around 520 and declare, so to be boweld out so quickly is very disappointing. The conditions are certainly favouring the bowlers on this wicket so we will need to apply lots of pressure on the West Indies batsmen and try to get them out for as little as possible. They have a strong batting line-up so it will be tough ask, but we are confident of establishing a first innings lead.
Below is the scorecards and some shots of England's dismissals.
