RBS Cup
India Vs England
1st Test Day 1, Chennai, Close of play 6:09pm

England dismissed for 168
(England Strike Before The Close)

England batsmen Matt Prior and James Anderson strode out into the middle yet again. During the tea interval, Indian openers Gautham Gambhir and Virender Sehwag had had a quick tea before heading off to the nets for some quick batting practice as it would only take a maximum of 20 minutes to get the two wickets needed. For England, they relied on Matt Prior who had looked confident against Harbhajan and Yuvraj.

Indian captain MS Dhoni continued to bowl with Harbhajan at one end and tried Zaheer at the other. However, Prior was not here to stay, he continuously hit the ball to the fielders in the inner-ring and by this he was getting frustrated. He did have enough confidence in James Anderson who continued to defend. Prior then launched his attack on Yuvraj. He smashed 10 off one over and in the following over smashed two boundaries which made him the highest scorer in England's Innings so far. Anderson also frustrated Dhoni by edging to the slips to get off the mark as the score finally reached 140. However, Prior's aggressive batting was to be short lived. Prior was forced to defend the first 3 deliveries of Zaheer's 9th over.

With the ball into the 63rd over, Zaheer was experimenting and tired to find some Reverse Swing as he is very capable of. Prior got a beauty from Zaheer with the ball Reverse swinging into Prior. Expecting the ball to go towards the slips, Prior shuffled towards his off-stump. As the ball pitched, it came back into him. At this moment, Prior knew he was in trouble. The ball struck his pads on the kneeroll. Zaheer and all the slip corden along with MS Dhoni leapt into the air to appeal as umpire Billy Bowden did not hesitate in raising the finger. Zaheer picked his 1st wicket with a beauty and got Prior just as he was becoming a threat.

This brought Monty Panesar to the crease. MS Dhoni brought Amit Mishra into the gully as Dhoni now had 4 slips and two gullies waiting for the edge off Monty Panesar's bat. On Panesar's first ball, he got lucky. He lashed out at a wide one wide outside off-stump and due to mistiming the shot, he gained an edge. VVS Laxman at 3rd slip went up to grab the ball but it was a couple of milimetres out of his grasp as the fielders put the hands on their heads whilst Panesar laughed. Anderson and Panesar frustrated the Indians by continously blocking. Dhoni yet again brang Yuvraj into the attack. Anderson charged him and gained his 1st boundary as England finally reached 163. The following delivery, Anderson charged again and yet again he got the same result. Unfortunatly, it was third time lucky for Yuvraj as Anderson was beaten through the gate with the quicker one as Yuvraj picked up his second wicket. The tail had batted for 30 minutes and as a result meant that India would have to bat atleast 10 overs today.

Indian openers Gautham Gambhir and Virender Sehwag along with Sachin Tendulkar ran off the field before the rest of their team to get ready as India would have to play a streaky session before the close.

After a 10 minute break, the openers strode out into the middle. In the space of 10 minutes, the light had deteriorated a bit and it looked as though that the maximum overs possible today would be 6 or 7 at a maximum. Pietersen set his field accordingly as he knew that Gambhir and Sehwag are both aggressive batsmen. Steve Harmsion had the new ball in his hand as he ran up for the first delivery.

Early in Harmison's over he was getting bounce off the pitch like Sharma had done. However, Gambhir and Sehwag were up to the challenge and counterattacked by giving themselves room and smashing it through the covers. Pietersen told Harmison to change his length and bowl fuller. This was to outdo Gambhir.

Harmison was getting a lot of pace aswell as a bit of out-swing. Gambhir knew this but on this occasion he was a bit late on the stroke. Gambhir tried to flick it down fine of James Anderson at fine-leg. With him being late on it, the ball caught the edge of his bat and went straght into Paul Collingwood's hands at Point. Gambhir looked gleamingly up at the sky as Pietersen and the England team celebrated the early wicket with still 4 overs to play. Gambhir was looking a threat but he had been removed.

In a shock, the "Little Master" accompanied Virender Sehwag. The fans reacted late as they were expecting a night watchmen. Despite the fading light, Sehwag and Tendulkar entertained the crowd by smashing a total of 5 boundaries in the last 4 overs.

With 10 overs bowled, Billy Doctrove got his light meter out and immediatly removed the stumps signalling the end of the day's play. The day had been dominated by India despite England's quick wicket before the close.

How did you get the bad light factor???????
Great update as always Arslaan KUTGW.

He didn't he just wrote about it, there is no such thing in-game ;) All the best writers do it ;)

Good update Arslaan. England are going to struggle here, they need to really shine with the ball and not allow India to get more than 250. Monty will be crucial. Great stuff, keep it up mate :)
