Bashar scores 80, as Bangladesh suffer another collapse

1st npower Test Match: England vs Bangladesh at Lords

Stumps
Day 3

Bangladesh (2nd Innings) 170-7 54 Overs
Khaled Mashud 22*(48) J. Anderson 3-54
Mashrafe Murtaza 0*(0) S. Jones 2-39
Habibul Bashar 80(131)
Nafees Iqbal 40(63)

Bangladesh (1st Innings) 188 all out 53.3 Overs
England (1st Innings) 661-5 declared 140 Overs

Bangladesh trail by 303 runs, 3 wickets in hand

Ian Botham: If this was a boxing match I am sure the umpire would have stopped it by now. Bangladesh are on the verge of a heavy innings defeat here at Lords. They are facing the harsh realities of Test Cricket.

Paul Allot: People had expected Bangladesh to put in a better performance here after their ODI and Test Series win over Zimbabwe. But they have been completely outplayed by the home side.

Ian Botham: Paul, that was against Zimbabwe, and a secong string side too. That was at home. Now they are playing against the second best team in the world and are playing away from home. Subcontinental sides always struggle to adapt to English conditions, and for one that is playing for the first time here, its all the more harder.

Paul Allot: (laughs) Sure Ian. Anyways Bangladesh lost five wickets in the evening session. The most important one was that of Habibul Bashar, out caught at Gully by Batty off Anderson. He was once again the top scorer for Bangladesh, making 80. James Anderson has got three wickets, while Simon Jones picked up two wickets, to take his tally to seven wickets in the match.

England near comprehensive victory

England are very close to a comprehensive victory over Bangladesh in the first npower Test Match at Lords to go 1-0 up in the series.

After a poor display in the first innings, England's James Anderson struck back in the second innings with three wickets

At Stumps on Day 3, Bangladesh were struggling at 170-7 in their second innings, still 303 runs away from making England bat again. This was after they were bowled out for 188 in the first innings.

Glamorgan paceman Simon Jones finished with figures of 5-52 in the first innings and added two more wickets to that in the second innings, dismissing Ashraful and Shahriyar. James Anderson picked up three wickets in the second innings, two of which were off beautiful deliveries.

Simon Jones has so far taken seven wickets in the match

England had no second thoughts about enforcing the follow-on, and Anderson struck in the very first over of the second innings, dismissing Javed Omar for a duck. Some resistance was offered by Nafees Iqbal (40) and Habibul Bashar (80), but the rest of the batting failed yet again, as Bangladesh crumbled from 97-2 at tea, to 170-7 at stumps.

Habibul Bashar scored a fine 80 to add to his 51 in the first innings

England will now be looking to wrap up the match early tomorrow. Simon Jones needs just three more wickets to get ten wickets in the match.

England football captain, David Beckham was in attendance at Lords with his wife Victoria.

"I am delighted by the way our cricket team is playing at the moment. I am confident that we can beat the Aussies in this year's Ashes", said the Real Madrid star.

Nah what I'm wondering is,he's supposed to be in Spain, not England.

Australia have announced their one day squad for the Natwest Series and the Twenty20 International.

Ricky Ponting will captain a 15-man Australia side that also includes a second wicketkeeper, Brad Haddin and batsman Michael Hussey.

All four pacemen Brett Lee, Glen McGrath, Jason Gillespie, and Michael Kasprowicz have been picked, which means there is no room for the likes of Shaun Tait and Nathan Bracken.

Speaking on the squad, chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said:"We are looking forward to this one day series, as it will be the ideal test for us in preparation for the Ashes. We also want to win the Natwest Series again, after having won it in 2001."

The Triangular Natwest Series which also features hosts England and Bangladesh is scheduled to start on 16th of June.

Australia will also play a Twenty20 International against England on the 13th of June at the Rose Bowl.

England and Bangladesh, who are currently playing each other in the first of two test matches in the npower test series, are expected to announce their ODI squads soon.

Australia one-day squad to face England and Bangladesh: Matthew Hayden, Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting, Damien Martyn, Simon Katich, Andrew Symonds, Michael Clarke, Michael Hussey, Brad Haddin, Shane Watson, Brad Hogg, Jason Gillespie, Brett Lee, Michael Kasprowicz, Glenn McGrath
