David Gower : Hello and Welcome to The 3rd Man's Chat for the final session show of the day. That was a good start to the 1st day's play of the 1st test of Ashes 06-07 as we saw many ups and downs with both teams and lots of action and drama right from the first ball. Its was a good first session for both teams as Australia lost 1 wicket and scored 99 runs and England got the wicket of Lanager just before lunch but then it was England all the way in the 2nd session as they managed to pick up quick wickets and then the pressure was right back on the home side. But Matthew Hayden came to the rescue as he ended the days play with an unbeaten century and M.Clarke supported him nicely to get a partnership going on. With me in the studio are Geoffrey Boycott,M.Nicholas and Naseer Hussain. Lets hear from our cricketing experts about their views and opinions about the days play.Well Mark what do u think about this terrfic start to the Ashes?

Mark Nicholas : Indeed a good start to the Ashes 06-07 just what the fans needed. They wanted to see some good cricket from both sides orelse most of the time its one-sided when Australia are playing at home but today England bowled really well and these are the signs which shows that this Ashes series will be the best as both teams are fighting hard for it. England bowled well in the 1st two sessions but then in the final session after tea Australia steadied the ship with a good partnership between M.Hayden and M.Clarke .Hayden was sensetional with his batting and he never looked in trouble just he was lucky on the first ball where he survived the caught behind appeal but then he was concentrating hard and was very good with his technique and shot selection as well.England bowled well in the start with Harmison and Hoggard bowling a tight line and then Monty Panesar was causing some trouble to the batsmen with his tight bowling and keeping the runs down as well but most importantly he was looking for wickets which is a positive sign. England got 4 important wickets due to intelligent bowling and fielding . Lets take a look at the Fall Of Wickets .

Fall of Wickets

1st wicket of the Ashes 06-07 was of J.Langer.
Hoggard troubled both the openers with his incoming deliveries and also kept the runs down . He bowed one just back of the length and due to low bounce in the wicket the ball went below Langer's bat who was trying to cut an inswinging delivery which is always dangerous and the ball went on to hit the stumps . Not a good sign for the batsman to see the stumps knocked back .

Next to depart was Australian captain Ricky Ponting . That was a big wicket for England as Ponting is in good form in test cricket and Flintoff bowled well to him he concentrated on and around the good length area and then bowled slightly short and got Ponting in two minds whether to go on the frontfoot or on the backfoot and finally the ball went beneath the bat and clipped the top of offstump.

The 3rd wicket of fall was of D.Martyn .
He looked in good touch but he tried to steal away a single which was a good plan as he saw that Monty was fielding but then who would have thought that Monty will be so brilliant that he will get a run out . Monty was good in the field today infact he created that run out with quick pickup and throw .

The last wicket of the day to fall was of M.Hussey .
Once again it was good intellegent bowling by Monty Panesar. He bowled a tight line and kept on pressuring the batsman to work away for runs as easy runs were hard to comeby and Hussey likes to be on the aggressive side and he tried to glance one on the legside but was only successful to drag the ball on the stumps.

David Gower :We saw some good bowling by England but there was one man who rescued Australia and went on score an unbeaten century at the end of the days play . Matthew Hayden is todays Batsman Of The Day.

G. Boycott: Hayden was brilliant with his batting today . He was well organised and his technique was superb .He easily found the gaps and once he managed to play for 1 full session it was difficult for the bowlers to get his wicket and then he smashed them all over the play .Lets take a look at his Wagon Wheel we can see that he scored 91 runs behind square of which he scored 50 runs on the legside and 41 on the offside . He got a six behind square on the offside as well when he went for the big one but it was not right of the middle of the bat but due to his power in the shot the ball managed to clear the ropes. He was particularly strong on the offside where he got most of the runs infact he scored 54% of his runs on the offside and 62% of his runs behind square on both sides of the wicket. Thats the quality of a great batsman .Now all he has to do tomorrow is to stay at the wicket and score at a normal rate and also he has to continue his good partnership with Clarke so that England will be on the backfoot as the situation is concerned.

David Gower :Today we saw some good bowling from England and Hoggard, Flintoff and Panesar took 1 wicket. But due to his good control over his line and length and bowling well on his Ashes debut Monty Panesar is todays Bowler Of The Day.

N.Hussain: Monty was brilliant with his bowling and he has started troubling the Aussies right from day 1 which means that he will get more turn on the 3rd and 4th day when Australia will bat again in their 2nd innings . But the only problem is that he needs good support from the other end as well . Today he was bowling nicely from one end and runs were coming easily from the other end. Well if we take a look at the bowling pitchmap of Monty Panesar then we can see that he bowled around a good length area for both the right handers and the left handers. He bowled well to Hayden and Hussey where he got the ball to turn into the lefthanders and due to some good field placing the batsmen were not allowed to get on with easy runs . But as we can see when he overpitched the ball he was smased for runs also when he bowled short the batsmen had enough time to adjust till the end and play the shots . But overall Monty was brilliant with his bowling and had a good 1st day of his Ashes debut.

Mark Nicholas :Now all Australia needs to do is get this partnership going tomorrow and should target a score in access of 450 and then the pressure will be right on England to chase this 1st innings score on the other hand England will take the new ball tomorrow and thats their chance to break this partnership and then Gilchrist will come to bat so still there is batting left for Australia . So this match is wide open for both the teams lets see how it will on day2.

Fantastic to see this back. Australia well on top unfortunately, the wicket of Hayden will be key. If they can get him early on in the morning then they will fancy thier chances of getting some more. I love the animations, ie FOW/Bowler of the Day and Batsman of the Day.

Great work.
