Symonds scores century as Australia fightback

England were right on top before the lunch interval as Australia were struggling since they lost three wickets in the morning session of the day. The only thing that England were looking for was to restrict Australia under 319 runs so that they could enforce the follow-on which will give them a chance to win this test match and level this series 1-1. But Australia were not going up so easily as we all know that they fight in the end. Just after the lunch break Australian skipper Ricky Ponting was setting a perfect example for his team by scoring a good half century and getting runs on the board which was very important for Australia at that stage. The main thing that Ponting did was that he never alowed Monty to stick to a particular line and length as the pitch was helping the spinners a bit and if Monty would have settled with a good line and length then it would have been very difficult for Australia to score runs. Ponting played some magnificent strokes through the offside of the back foot to the English fast bowlers before reaching yet another half-century in test matches.

Even after Ponting reached his half century, England bowlers were bowling a good length and were not allowing Ponting to score easy runs. More pressure was applied by Vaughan by setting a good field on both sides of the wicket and making Ponting work hard to score his runs. This tactics worked for England as Ponting tried to smash a wide delivery from Broad and Pietersen took a magnificent catch at backward point. Ponting will be very disappointed after getting out in the 60's as he was looking set for yet another century in test matches. Broad got the vital wicket of the Australian skipper and another wicket now will put the pressure back on the Aussies.

Clarke continues his good form with the bat
But Australia were not going to give it up so easily on this good batting track as M.Clarke and A.Symonds started to build up a partnership for the 5th wicket. M.Clarke was looking were confident against the seam bowlers and was brilliant with his footwork against Monty Panesar. With Symonds at the other end who was scoring more of his runs in boundaries, Clarke took the initiative as well and started scoring his runs quickly to put the pressure on the England bowlers. Clarke scored quick runs against Monty and Vaughan which brought up his half-century in just 58 balls. Clarke is looking in goof form in this series as this is his second half-century in three innings.

Ponting lost his wicket after scoring his half-century and Clarke repeated the same thing. M.Clarke, one of the best players of spin bowling, threw his wicket away in the process of working the ball on the legside but was deceived by a slower one from Vaughan and in the end Hoggard took a simple catch at square leg. Australia lost their 5th wicket just when another partnership was building.

Symonds to the rescue
But the day belonged to Andrew Symonds who batted brilliantly today and handled the pressure well when Australia were in trouble after they lost 3 wicket in the first session of the day. Symonds was looking for an opportunity to make a mark in test cricket and today he made the most out of it and scored a century just when Australia needed the most. He was looking very confident right from the start as he smashed each and every bowler and never allowed any bowler to get into a rhythm. His innings consisted of a combination of power and placement and the determination of playing a big knock. Symonds reached his 50 off just 56 balls but then he took his time to score the next 50 runs. Symonds got the opportunity to play in this match as D.Martyn suffered a thumb injury and now one can say that Symonds has sealed his place in the playing XI.

Flintoff strikes twice before the end of the days play
Just before 30 minutes before the close of play, Flintoff stuck twice in an over as he got the important wicket of A.Symonds and then two deliveries later Brett Lee followed him to the pavilion. This double breakthrough has put England in the drivers seat in this match. Australia have managed to avoid the follow-on but at the end of the day its England who are in the drivers seat in this match as Australia still trail by 166 runs. Stay tuned for all the action of day 4.

Good stuff there from Hussey , i would have liked it to see Clarke go on to a hundred but unfotunatly he had to make a mistake :(

Keep it up Gamer , one of the best stories on this forum ;)

Now Broad and Flintoff will open the bowling on day 4. It will be a dream debut for Broad if he picks 5 wickets in this innings:cool:
It will be toguh with only 3 wickets left but hopefully he'll do it, then open the batting too, make a100 off 30 balls and England declare allowing him to take another 5 in the next innings and win us the match.

Well done!

Looked to be a superb day of test cricket out there. Superb hundred from Symonds but England have still been able to keep the advantage as Flintoff led from the front. Gilchrist is the threat now since he has go to 33. Lets hope England can wrap it up tomorrow.

The presentation looks excellent again. Top quality stuff.

Beautiful update mate. England bowled really well but Roy also batted well under a lot of pressure. Can't wait for next update
