Brilliant bowling by England bowlers in this innings as Australia were bowled out for 435 runs. The score looks good at first glance but it was nowhere close to the mammoth England's first innings total of 522 runs. Andrew Flintoff and debutant Stuart Broad lead the bowling from the front as they took 4 wickets each and bowling Australia out just before lunch on day 4 and now England are leading by 87 runs.
Australia started day 4 with the score on 356/7 but they still had Adam Gilchrist and Shane Warne at the crease as a result of which it seemed that Australia can reach close to the England's total if this pair batted for the first session of the day. It looked as if Gilchrist would take the game away from England as he started to play his shots freely and had already started to dominate the bowlers within the first few overs of the day. It needed something special for England to get rid of the dangerous Gilchrist and Stuart Broad bowled an unplayable delivery to get rid of him. Broad bowled couple of deliveries on the middle stump which came back into the left hander after pitching and then he bowled a delivery which went the other way and foxed Gilchrist completely who tried to work that on the leg side but till he realized that the ball seamed the other way it was too late as the stumps were broken. Gilchrist played well for his half century and was looking in good touch this morning before being bowled out by debutant Stuart Broad.
Gilchrist's wicket
Australia all out
Australia were still trailing by 120 runs at this stage when M.Johnson walked in to join Shane Warne. With just two wickets left in the innings, Australians were looking to score runs at a quicker rate and Warne made his intentions clear by smashing Broad for a couple of boundaries on the offside. Warne was scoring runs just when it mattered the most and M.Johnson was supporting him nicely by scoring some runs form the other end as well. This 9th wicket partnership was frustrating England as runs were coming easily and Australia were getting close to the England's total. But it was Stuart Broad once again who provided England with the much needed breakthrough by taking the wicket of M.Johnson. Johnson, who was played a nice little innings, edged a delivery which moved away from him and Bell took a simple catch in the gully region. Johnson played an important little knock as every run was important at this stage. It didn't took long for Flintoff to get rid of the last Australian batsman as he bowled G.McGrath for a duck. Australia were bowled out for 435 runs but England are on top at this stage as they lead by 87 runs.
Broad, Flintoff took 4 wickets each
Both Flintoff and Broad took 4 wickets each in this innings but it was Stuart Broad who bowled brilliantly in this innings and that too on his debut as he got all the important breakthroughs with included the wickets of Hayden, Ponting and Gilchrist. This brilliant bowling performance has put England in the drivers seat with a lead of 87 runs but the main problem is that the time is running away from them. They need quick runs today to set a challenging target for Australia and should look forward for a win to level the series.
