England's tour of India - 2021

Topley and Rashid are the only bowlers in this England team with ODI bowling averages under 40. That's not a fantastic look.

Also if you pick Liam Livingstone you probably ought to use his bowling but anyway

Dhawan back on bench & KL to open once Iyer returns? Actually this does help the team balance. I have been craving for it right since the time we toured West Indies back in 2019.

Also this is no disrespect to Dhawan, he has done his job for the team when they required it but it's time we respect his contributions and let him be a backup for the remaining years in his career.

I'd try Rishabh Pant.

So I know I post a lot about roles in ODI cricket, but I'm going to post about roles in ODI cricket. In this case, specifically about the bowling attack.

I reckon you want two attacking bowlers, two stock bowlers, one express pace bowler and one "hard overs" bowler in your attack. The stock and attacking bowlers can be spinners or quicks according to the merits of the team in question, but the key is to have six options and for them to be balanced.

Also, because of the need for four dual-role cricketers in the side you'd ideally like three of your bowlers to be able to fill batting roles - the fourth dual-role player will be your keeper

Stock Bowlers - These guys pretty much have to be dual-role players, because a stock bowler is the least specialised role.
  1. :eng: :ar: Ben Stokes (middle-order hitter)
  2. :eng: :ar: Liam Livingstone (middle-order hitter)
  3. :eng: :ar: Moeen Ali (middle-order hitter)
  4. :eng: :ar: Liam Dawson (firefighter)
Attacking Bowlers - England do lack these a little bit, so may want to fill in here with one of the suggested "Hard Overs" bowlers.
  1. :eng: :bwl: Adil Rashid
  2. :eng: :bwl: Saqib Mahmood
  3. :eng: :bwl: Matt Parkinson
  4. ... I can't think of any others
Express Pace Bowlers - We already know who these guys are.
  1. :eng: :bwl: Jofra Archer
  2. :eng: :bwl: Mark Wood
  3. :eng: :bwl: Ollie Stone
"Hard Overs" Bowlers - Like I said before, an extra one of these can fill the role of an attacking bowler.
  1. :eng: :ar: Chris Woakes (firefighter)
  2. :eng: :bwl: Reece Topley
  3. :eng: :bwl: Chris Jordan
  4. :eng: :ar: David Willey (middle-order hitter)
You'll notice I don't include any Currans on this list
