Considering United got 80 million for Ronaldo, I would say 35.5 million on Silva is sound investment. Curious to see how El Shaarawi does as well.

Manchester United are delighted to announce that the pre-season friendlies went really well as the Red Devils remained unbeaten throughout the pre-season. The Red Devils played a total of nine friendlies including the Asia tour and managed to win eight of them and draw one. They scored a total of twenty-nine goals in the nine friendlies and conceded just two. Lets hope that United can carry the same form from the pre-season into the Premiership and hopefully defend their Premier League title.

Jose Mourinho the new manager of Manchester United, was very pleased with his team's pre-season while speaking to MUTV he said: "I am very happy with our pre-season. We won eight of the nine matches scoring twenty-nine goals and that's really good. Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney were in good form as they scored many goals.

"But we have to deal with the injuries happened to David Silva and Michael Owen. David Silva and Michael Owen both picked up the injuries in Japan and will be missing the Community Shield match against Chelsea. Owen may be fit for the first game, but David Silva is a major doubt for the first two-three games."

Community Shield Preview
8th August, 2009

Chelsea v Man Utd Community Shield preview

Manchester United and Chelsea lock horns at Wembley on Sunday in the annual curtain raiser to the new season, a match that can be seen live on Sky Sports 2 and HD2.

There have been plenty of changes since the end of last term when United defended their Premier League title and Chelsea triumphed in the FA Cup final with a 2-1 victory over Everton.

A typically busy summer for both the teams, has seen Carlo Ancelotti come in to replace Guus Hiddink as Blues manager, while Cristiano Ronaldo has joined Real Madrid in a record-breaking transfer and also Sir Alex Ferguson who retired at the end of the season has been replaced by the former Blues boss Jose Mourinho.

Both sides will still be confident of adding more silverware to ever-expanding trophy cabinets and the Community Shield also provides the opportunity to gain a slight psychological edge at the start of a nine-month marathon.

Manchester United news

Jose Mourinho may have lost Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez but the United squad remains one of the strongest in Europe, let alone England, and he has added a number of reinforcements including wingers David Silva and Antonio Valencia and striker Michael Owen.

Valencia and Owen have both caught the eye in a positive pre-season campaign for United and could feature at Wembley, although Mourinho has several other options in attack such as Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and youngsters Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck.

The United manager's injury concerns can't be ingnored, with Nemanja Vidic set to be sidelined for another fortnight with a calf problem and David Silva and Gary Neville also missing. Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is also facing up to eight weeks out following finger surgery and Mourinho has yet to decide between Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak.

Chelsea News

Ancelotti will be looking forward to pitting his wits against Mourinho and is set to employ a 4-4-2 formation, with Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka up front.

Joe Cole is the only definite absentee as he continues to recover from a knee injury, while summer signing Yuri Zhirkov (knee) is doubtful. Michael Ballack has battled back to fitness following a fractured toe and is available for selection, leaving Ancelotti with plenty of options for a midfield berth.

The Italian must also decide between Ricardo Carvalho and Alex in central defence, with John Terry an almost certain starter after committing his future to the club to end weeks of speculation.

Last-gasp Valencia wins it for the Champions
9th August, 2009

Valencia along with O'Shea and Anderson celebrate

Manchetser United win the Community Shield against Chelsea thanks to Antonio Valencia's dramatic injury-time winner at the Wembley Stadium.

Frank Lampard set up Didier Drogba to put the Blues ahead and only some super saves by Tomasz Kuszczak kept United in the game. The Red Devils levelled when Wayne Rooney headed home Park Ji Sung's cross and, although Chelsea poured forward, they could not beat Kuszczak. Nicolas Anelka hit the bar for the FA Cup holders before Valencia's low shot into the bottom corner won it for Manchetser United.

Chelsea and Manchester United both had a busy summer with some managerial changes. Carlo Anclotti replacing Guus Hiddink at Stamford Bridge and former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho took in charge of the Red Devils after Sir Alex Ferguson retired. But the way Carlo Ancelotti's men started this game they showed all signs that they are a force to reckon with, under Carlo Ancelotti's new 4-4-2 formation.

Chelsea had all the early possession and Luis Suarez - the new signing from Ajax - forced an early save out of Kuszczak after Michael Ballack had teed him up in the area. Kuszczak, who was given the thumps up by Jose Mourinho to become the number one ahead of Ben Foster in the absence of Edwin Van Der Sar, was fast becoming a thorn in Chelsea's side.

He made two more stops in quick succession, saving acrobatically from Frank Lampard and collecting Drogba's low shot. The former West Brom goalkeeper was finally beaten on 33 minutes when Lampard pulled the ball back for Drogba, who took a touch before burying his shot into the back of the net.

But Kuszczak also did brilliantly to keep out a Luis Suarez header on the stroke of half-time and Manchester United capitalised when they equalised out of nowhere after the interval. Half-time substitute Park Ji Sung produced the cross of his life from out wide on the left and Rooney rose highest to nod the ball past the flailing figure of Petr Cech, who could only help it into the net.

The United defence was soon back under pressure with Jonny Evans and Patrice Evra clearing a Essien shot off the line before O'Shea's block kept out Anelka's follow-up. And Chelsea threw everything at the Champions, forcing Kuszczak into another smart stop from Deco before he tipped a Obi Mikel header on to the bar.

There was drama at the other end too when Cech somehow escaped without being penalised after colliding with Dimitar Berbatov as he chased down a long ball on the edge of the Chelsea penalty area. But Chelsea were still looking like the only winners and the Champions were defending desperately when Anelka saw his rasping shot hit the bar late on.

There was still time for one last Manchester United attack, however, and summer signing Valencia made it count. The former Wigan winger felt he should have had a penalty after being caught by Ricardo Carvalho but picked himself up to collect the ball on the edge of the area before firing into the bottom corner to clinch a huge victory.

Mourinho - Blues are main danger
14th August, 2009

Mourinho: Chelsea main threat

Jose Mourinho admits he expects Chelsea to be the biggest threat to their Premier League defence this coming season. Mourinho conceded Arsenal and Liverpool both look good, but it is Chelsea he thinks will be their main danger.

The new Manchester United chief feels The Blues' experience is the main reasoning behind them being the pick of their nearest rivals. "Arsenal are a very inconsistent team and they have lost Adebayor and Toure but they are very good side, while Liverpool have lost Xabi Alonso but bought Aquilani and they challenged United till the end of last season," said Mourinho. "But Chelsea are the most experienced and they might be our biggest threat."

But Mourinho remains confident his side could again do the UEFA Champions League and Premier League double. "We don't need to get much better to achieve what we did couple of seasons ago but the challenge for us is to improve," he said. "You would think with young players like Anderson, (David) Silva, (Wayne) Rooney and Jonny Evans we have the capacity to do that. There is a good foundation here left by Sir Alex Ferguson."

De Rossi bid rejected

De Rossi: United target

Roma official Bruno Conti claims he was approached by Manchester United regarding the availability of midfielder Daniele De Rossi.

The Red Devils have been strongly linked with a host of players during the summer transfer window as Jose Mourinho looks to piece together a side capable of defending their Premier League crown from the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal for the third consecutive time.

The Portuguese coach is believed to have cast his eye over a number of those plying their trade in his former club's homeland, with employees of former club Inter Milan dominating the headlines. However, it appears that Roma midfielder De Rossi has also fallen under his radar, with a big-money approach reported to have been lodged.

"I've personally had a call from Mourinho to take the player to Manchetser United. But Daniele is untouchable," Conti told Radio Radio. "The offer was of a lot of money, but it has been refused."

Roma president Rosella Sensi has also moved to distance the club from any suggestion that they would be prepared to part with the Italy international. "De Rossi isn't and won't be for sale. He remains with us", she said. Sensi also admitted that the decision to offload Alberto Aquilani to Liverpool was a tough call to make. "It was a difficult choice. But he deserved a big club," added the club supremo.

Berbatov scores as Mourinho begins with a win
16th August, 2009

m8jj8m.jpg

Dimitar Berbatov(in pic) scored the only goal of the game

Dimitar Berbatov scored as Jose Mourinho got his Manchetser United reign up and running with a 1-0 victory over new boys Birmingham City at Old Trafford on the opening day of the season.

The ?30million Bulgarian netted after only six minutes as the Premier League champions dominated the first half. However, it was a different story following the restart as last season's Championship runners-up fought back and were unfortunate not to get something from the match.

Jose Mourinho - whose injury-hit squad had battled to victory in the Community Shield final against Chelsea at the Wembley stadium last weekend - was in the end no doubt happy enough with the final result. But the Red Devils manager knows it will take more than such average performances over the next nine months to secure a fourth consecutive league title. As expected, Manchester United were soon on the offensive, and forced a succession of early corners.

It proved to be a dream start for Berbatov who was criticized by many fans last seaosn. The ball was worked quickly through the right side of the penalty area to Fletcher, who cut the back into the path of the Bulgarian striker and he calmly guided his shot low into the far corner.

Manchester United were soon rampant again, as Wayne Rooney chipped the ball over for Antonio Valencia, whose goalbound close-range header was blocked by Blues defender Frank Queudrue. Red Devils captain Rio Ferdinand was allowed space some 30 yards out - and his low, rasping drive was only just wide of Joe Hart's right-hand post.

Birmingham were struggling to get a foothold in the match and Manchester United surged forwards again in the 19th minute. Right-back John O'Shea let fly with an angled drive, which deflected off Parnaby and almost into the far corner.

Michael Carrick headed wide from a near-post corner as the Red Devils threatened to extend their lead once again. There was finally some respite for the battered Blues when they forced a corner in the 29th minute. However, the delivery was poor and eventually the ball went out harmlessly for a goal-kick.

Tomasz Kuszczak was eventually called into action on the half hour when Kevin Phillips flicked on a long ball into the path of Keith Fahey. The Irish held off his marker and drilled in a low shot from the edge of the box, which the Manchester United keeper had to turn behind at full-stretch.

Jonny Evans then did well to get back ahead of Phillips as the Birmingham striker looked to sneak in behind the home defence. This was now the best spell for the newly-promoted Birmingham club. However, the visitors were still unable to create another decent opening as the interval approached.

Rooney sliced wide from an acute angle when the ball broke kindly to the English international in the left side of the penalty area. On 50 minutes, there was a big let-off for Manchester United. First Phillip's close-range effort was blocked by the legs of Kuszczak after he had sprung the offside trap, before Evans cleared Queudrue's follow-up shot from in front of his own net.

Manchester United could then have made it 2-0 moments later when Rooney got clear into the left side of the area once more - and this time bent a low, curling effort just wide of the far post with the keeper beaten. After the Red Devils had dominated the opening half, this was now a much more evenly contested match-up. The Blues continued to press and Manchester United sensed they needed the cushion of another goal.

The former Liverpool star Michael Owen was given a huge ovation from the Manchester United faithful, when he came on as a substitute. His far-post header from a cross by Rooney was straight at Hart. The former English forward almost netted an acrobatic strike when he turned in the six-yard box to poke a right-foot effort just wide, but in the end 1-0 to the Manchester United proved enough for victory.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho: "We always looked in control and I always thought the second goal would come. But Birmingham defended very well and we lacked a bit of sharpness around the box. Credit to Birmingham. If the second does not come you can be punished in the last 10 minutes. But we had a good game and we are happy with the three points."

Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish: "Manchester United were flowing and we had a few problems down the right but credit to my players we showed we had a threat. We did not take a hammering and could have nicked one and we have got to take the positives from the match. I think we will be OK as long as we work as hard as we did today."

Late Rooney winner sinks Burnley

Wayne Rooney celebrates his winner with Antonio Valencia

Wayne Rooney netted in injury-time as Manchester United claimed a dramatic 3-2 victory over newly promoted Burnley to record their first away victory in the Barclays Premier League under Jose Mourinho.

Wayne Rooney's 34th-minute penalty was canceled out by Robbie Blake's neat finish in the 66th minute before the Red Devils took the lead again through Dimitar Berbatov 8 minutes from time. Burnley defender Clarke Carlisle looked to have rescued a point for the hosts three minutes later but Rooney's header from Gary Neville's throw gave Mourinho's battling Red Devils the points.

A high-tempo start saw David Nugent put through in the second minute, but the young Irish defender Johnny Evans slid in to intercept the ball, which United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak cleared to safety. United had their first real chance five minutes later after David Edgar fouled Anderson on the left edge of the penalty area. Rooney whipped the resulting free-kick into the box but Clarets goalkeeper Brian Jensen ignored the physical presence of Ferdinand and claimed well.

Rooney was Manchester United's main attacking outlet and he found space down the right flank in the 18th minute before delivering a high cross into the penalty area - but Owen was unable to make contact. Burnley launched a counter-attack in the 24th minute but Graham Alexander - on for the injured Martin Paterson - was unable to pick out Fletcher and United cleared the danger.

The hosts had a shout for a penalty turned down in the 27th minute when Nugent went down among a crowd of bodies, but referee Howard Webb waved away the protests of the Burnley players. United were then awarded a penalty of their own six minutes later after Carlisle brought down Scholes. Rooney took the spot-kick and drilled the ball low into the bottom-left corner past the dive of Jensen.

The visitors continued to press and could have been 2-0 up in the 39th minute when Owen was picked out by a long ball on the edge of the area - but the English international screwed his shot wide. Manchester United went close again in first-half added time after Neville's long throw-in was headed wide by the unmarked Carrick.

Substitute Antonio Valencia lashed a shot into the stands from long range after Rooney had laid the ball off. United adopted a direct style and their pressure was rewarded in the 82nd minute with a superb finish from substitute Berbatov. Rooney released his striking partner with a perfectly-weighted through-ball and Berbatov smashed a low shot from a narrow angle past Jensen.

But the English champions were again unable to hold on to the lead as Carlisle finished from close range three minutes later. Graham Alexander fired a low shot at goal after his initial free-kick was cleared and the ball hit several players before it fell perfectly at the feet of the defender, who swept home from six yards. The match looked to be heading for a draw but a long throw from Neville in injury-time found Rooney - and he rose highest to head home from close range.

__________________________________________________

Burnley boss Owen Coyle: "Gary Neville's throw-ins are very dangerous but we thought we had resolved the problems of coping with them. We had one last one to deal with and whether it was a bit of luck or what, the ball ended up in our net. In the last minute, if you can't win it, then at least don't lose it."

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho: "It was a good game we had our good moments in the match and they had their good moments. Burnley are a very good side. But it was a fantastic atmosphere today and we had to play against them. We have to get used to this as many teams hate us winning games."

Jordi Gomez battles with Darren Fletcher for the ball

Wigan Athletic ended Champions Manchester United's perfect start to the Barclays Premier League campaign after an entertaining 1-1 draw at the DW Stadium.

A 40th minute effort from Wigan winger Charles N'Zogbia was immediately canceled out at the other end by Wayne Rooney's header, with both teams unable to find a winning goal after the break despite a number of decent opportunities. Wigan took the lead when N'Zogbia found himself totally unmarked on the edge of the penalty area and stabbed the ball past goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak.

The visitors were level within a minute, however, with Rooney headed home past Chris Kirkland after a good cross from Antonio Valencia down the right. Ciprian Marica, who made his debut for Wigan after signing from Stuttgart, had a couple of chances in the second half but saw a shot blocked and then a header drop just wide of the target on a largely frustrating afternoon for him.

Midfielder Jordi Gomez had Wigan's first shot on goal after 10 minutes, but the ball took a slight deflection off a defender which made Kuszczak's save more comfortable. Wigan then came within a whisker of breaking the deadlock when a Jason Koumas shot from 20 yards just drifted wide of the mark, although the visitors squandered an even better opportunity of their own midway through the half.

Wayne Rooney broke free down the right-hand side but, instead of shooting for goal or finding the unmarked Berbatov on the far post, found himself in two minds and rolled the ball harmlessly past the far post, five yards in front of his team-mate. The visitors, spurred on by a tremendous and very vocal traveling contingent behind Kuszczak's goal, were giving as good as they were getting as half-time approached, only to fall behind in the 40th minute.

Gomez's long ball from halfway found N'Zogbia in acres of space, and the former Newcastle United man coolly drew the goalkeeper before stabbing the ball into the back of the net with the defence all claiming for an offside flag that never came. The lead lasted barely a minute, though, with Valencia cutting inside from the right and finding Rooney with his right-footed cross, the striker's header looping over the head of Kirkland and into the far corner via the post - again with a suspicion of offside.

Wigan made one change at the interval, the Korean Cho Won-Hee replacing Jason Koumas in what was surely an injury-enforced move as the midfielder was arguably the best player on the pitch in the first half.

Won-Hee looked immediately at home on the right-hand side of midfield, but it was down the left that Wigan nearly regained the lead after 57 minutes. The lively N'Zogbia again found himself in space and, after cutting in on his weaker right foot, it took a superb block from Nemanja Vidic to snuff out the danger.

Manchester United made a change of their own just before the hour mark, Johnny Evans replacing Nemanja Vidic at the back, with Anderson replacing Ryan Giggs shortly after. Marica had his first sight of goal midway through the second period after Maynor Figueroa fed the ball into his path, but Rio Ferdinand threw himself into the block.

Jason Scotland replaced Jordi Gomez for Wigan, who then went close again through a header from Marica, with the Romanian firing just over moments later as the home side piled on the pressure. Both the managers made their last change with 10 minutes remaining, Marica and Berbatov coming off for McCarthy and Owen, as both the managers went for the win, which never came.

__________________________________________________

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez: "United were the favourites for this one and it was important we got something. I'm ecstatic with a point. If we continue with that passion, drive, commitment, togetherness, we'll finish comfortably in the mid table. But it does come down to that little bit of quality in the final third. We had opportunities, but we wasted them."

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho: "We played two consecutive away games and we had a bit of traveling to do. We just got one day to do the training for this game. Our performance wasn't the best at all. We need to raise our game and standards. I think Wigan deserved their point as they played well."
