It's an absolutely awful deal. Sporting are getting €9 m plus Nani with wages paid, that alone would be bad without taking into account the money going to Spartak, the money going to Doyen and the 20% sell on clause.

£16 m all up, plus Nani with wages paid (who would be a £10 m+ player himself) and the sell-on clause for a Southampton-level signing.

Man Utd are out of the top four for good. Wonder how long it'll take the media to get over this van Gaal circlejerk and realise it too. Laughable the number of them that have United for the title as well.

Yeah - does sound like we've been had somewhat. Who brokered this deal...let me guess was it the same twat in charge of last year's transfer farce - Woodward I think his name was?

Agree there, we've overpaid for every player that Woodward has bought(if we do ever manage to buy), right from Fellaini to Rojo.

It is easy to use Woodward as the scapegoat like all Man Utd fans seem to be doing, but the reality is that a without CL it is impossible to pull decent players. Man Utd are also putting out a nice reputation of overpaying for players which clubs are seemingly taking advantage of. Both in terms of wages and fees.

The problem regarding also lies with the fact that the wrong players are being bought. Fellaini right after a purple patch. Herrera when Bilbao only sell at buy-out clauses. Shaw right after his breakthrough season. Rojo when he has big third-party ownership issues.

If you want to blame anyone, blame Ferguson for putting the club in this situation in the first place. We can expect more average players coming in over the next few seasons for £30 m+. Blind, Cuadrado and Douglas Costa next please.

Oh I do blame him, he brought Scholes back instead of giving Pogba a chance, actually thought Anderson, Nani, Young, Valencia, Rafael were good enough, was reluctant to buy big in his final years(excluding RVP).

Woodward is responsible as well though, Fellaini was bought for 4m more than his release clause, which expired a couple of weeks before we bought him, and last summer when we were champions and in the CL he failed to close deals for players when attracting them really shouldn't have been a problem then (although Moyes' indecision in the transfer market could also be blamed for this).

.

We had the CL last season - so what's the excuse then? Woodward is a clueless idiot who has to go! But yeah, as much as it pains me to say this, Sir Alex screwed us up in the last couple of years of his reign. Almost as though he was saying 'if I can't have the club, no one can'. I know that isn't the case but he did make some short sighted decisions aimed at getting him one more trophy windfall before he packed it in.

Man Utd signings

Ander Herrera (£29m)
Luke Shaw (£27m)
Juan Mata (£37m) (OVERPAID)
Marouane Fellaini (£27.5m) (OVERPAID)
Marcos Rojo (£16m) (OVERPAID) + Nani on Loan (Wages will be paid by us)

Total: £136.5 M

The Fellaini deal also comes down to thinking bigger. Clearly Fellaini is rubbish, so Moyes was after better players. When they didn't pan out, which happens in football, there was no choice but to go back in for the back-up.

Juan Mata (£37m) (OVERPAID)
Worth it I think. After the transfer he was the only one looked decent last season with Rooney.[DOUBLEPOST=1408614982][/DOUBLEPOST]
Transfer news: Liverpool in talks to sign AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli | Football News | Sky Sports
Hit or miss kind of striker at times, but when it's his day he can scare the defenders. Just needs to sort himself out now.

balotelli isn't a great signing in this day and age, 10-15 years ago he would have been awesome, he has power, speed, and technical ability and best of all the imagination to conjure up moments of brilliance but he just doesn't work hard enough for 90 minutes. you can't get away with that now, teams just don't have the luxury of playing someone that won't contribute beyond a few moments of great play. it's why this is the age of the attacking full back, the goal scoring winger, the deep lying creator and the false 9 and why very few teams play with no.10s that float about the pitch doing nothing until they launch a killer pass. you need guys doing more than would be expected of their position, not less. he's constantly caught wandering around the pitch, not making runs, not looking for space, not posing a problem for defenders and not pressuring anyone. he also does have a tendency to miss sitters when they do fall in his lap because he's not concentrating.

his highlight reel will always be great because he can beat people and slam the ball into the net from anywhere within a 30 yard radius of the goal, he's also arguable one of a handful of pure out and out strikers which does make him a rarity and hence worth a bit of money but if milan use his transfer money to bring in Raboit or maybe douglas costa we'll be the ones that have got the better deal (providing El Shaarawy stays fit, he's much better down the middle, he has a poachers eye, could be henry like if managed correctly).

Agree in general, but i'd just say i think depending on the team structure a classic "10" could still work & the proliferation of teams with weak defensive full-backs is still a major achillies heel in the modern game.

sorry, not saying no. 10s can't work, they just can't be lazy bums like they used to and that idea of the touched genius walking around the pitch doing nothing until unlocking the defense with a killer pass won't fly these days. it's why berbatov and van der vaart failed to cut it at the highest level, I don't think cantona would be a top level footballer these days and probably why brazil seem bereft of attacking options these days when they used too have too many. (the only one that gets away with it is ibrahimovic because he's been blessed with a unique physique for such a skillful creative player and can get away with doing the job of an andy carroll off the ball and just roughing defenders up).

anyway, it was a nice 24 hours being linked with raboit, jackson martinez or destro. now milan have decided that they're too pricey and are going to try and take eto'o or torres on, shock horror, a loan or free transfer deal.

die galliani.

Well i wouldn't say Berbatov didn't cut it at the highest level, he was excellent in the premier league. It's just at United, SAF was one of those coaches who just like like playing with a # 10. Similar to why Mourinho got rid of Mata the other day. After all one season Berbatov was United's top goal-scorer.

VDV also wasn't a lazy # 10. He did pretty ok at Spurs. I always thought they sold him a bit prematurely.

Other than Ibra you can say Totti was also successful in the lazy # 10/false 9 role for Roma last season too. I recall watching the S America WC qualifiers, Colombia & Chile's - Macnelly Torres (tim vickery always called him the S America Xavi) & Jorge Valdivia were also excellent in the role.

However during world cup Peckerman & Sampaouli both changed tactics & didn't start either.

Well di Maria is close to United, betting has been suspended as fee is agreed between the two clubs. Skysports
