General Cricket Discussion

Shai Hope has potential, his determinate but the issue is the West Indies Cricket Board. They need to restructure how cricket operates in the West Indies to make the Windies a dominant force in ODI and Test Cricket again. Politics within the Caribbean boards is an issue (Sarwan v Gayle , etc) . Additionally, To me, cricketers from the Caribbean are too focused on obtaining IPL rather than the ambitions to play Test cricket. West Indies cricket from a business perspective needs to generate revenue through potentially diversifying geographically to the US Market and the Hispanic nations in the Caribbean after COVID. Its good to see that they've been playing games in Florida. With more money, hopefully, they can attract talent and develop grassroots cricket.

Yeah, the WICB politics is well known to the entire cricketing world. I have actually met and coached under Jimmy Adams. Great man, infectious energy. I remember he'd say 'Chop Chop' to basically end any team meeting, and never said anything more than that.
Honestly, the players are looking out for themselves. If the board doesn't have enough money, they have to look at other franchises and T20 leagues to earn money for themselves. So, it seems to be an issue that is running in circles. The board needs to provide enough salary to the players to make them feel secure.
All said and done, I still believe West Indies is an absolute powerhouse in the T20I format.
But I also believe their style of play in ODIs has become very one dimensional - attack and attack. That is why I like Shai Hope. He is the one player who seems to play sensibly, according to me. I found myself banging my head every time Russel got out in CWC19, especially to Starc in the game against Australia. It just seemed a bit brainless to me. I may be wrong here, but I feel they need to find a few batsmen who anchor the innings, at strike rates of around 80-90. I love Jason Holder as a batsman, seems so effortless, and usually plays sensibly. Got a bit of that Rohit Sharma lazy elegance about him.

Hope has been living off the miraculous England knock three years ago for too much time in test cricket and has become overrated like Brathwaite. I don't think he is a player like Root either. Hope has struck nearly twice the number of sixes that Root has and has a significantly lesser strike-rate which means that he isn't really good at accumulating runs and rotating the strike. From what I've seen, it is easy to restrict his run scoring but the key difference between him and other Windies batsmen is that the former refuses to get out of frustration and will simply drop anchor. He is without any doubt the most consistent ODI batsman they have currently but he still has a long way to go and needs to improve his one-dimensional approach to batting.

The current board is also quite receptive to player opinions and wants to amend relations which is how the likes Russell, Narine and Bravo have played plenty of games recently. The quarrelsome board is a thing of the past and we might very well see stronger teams from West Indies now regularly.

Interesting. I have not really followed Hope in test matches. From what I've seen in ODIs in CWC19 and the India series, I've found him to be really good. There are a few overseas batsmen who leave a mark in India in ODIs. I vividly remember Hope and Hetmyer from West Indies and Tom Latham and Ross Taylor from New Zealand absolutely smashing our spinners all around.
What I meant by comparing him to Root was that he is the one batsman who is not a big hitter, playing around plenty of big hitters. Root and Hope are both surrounded by absolute smashers of the ball on both sides of the line-up in their respective ODI teams. But I do see your point. I don't know enough to comment with such depth.

There has been something of an issue recently, where an Aussie cricket fan had uploaded his home recordings to YouTube and was flagged by the ACB, then unflagged and apologised.

Cricket on YouTube is a huge part of our memories and also our "did you see it" moments. I agree, full matches and whatnot, okay, you don't get to post. Full highlightd you don't get to post.

Cricket West Indies has been doing an excellent job of posting a lot of highlights in this lockdown time. So has the English Cricket Board. Hell, right now, CWI are live streaming an old WI?India match that I know my team lost but still, it's there in the background.

I disagree with cricket boards screwing fans for making videos. There is an article on Cricinfo about it (by someone much better than me.)

its robelinda who is an absolute gold mine for cricket highlights. The guy is so good that even players like Aaron Finch and Jimmy Neesham showed their displeasure on twitter. The community backlash was absolutely massive like it should be.

It was this same person who the ACB apologised to.

If you remove cricket highlights from YouTube, you're removing fans. Simple as that.

Truly one of the most underrated games of the World Cup. Loved every second of it, when I watched it live. Bishop on commentary was just amazing. Can't ever forget the words "Carlos Brathwaite... REMEMBER THE NAME!!!" turning into "The dream has diminished for Carlos Brathwaite". So fukcin' poetic, it's insane.

what a match that was. somehow West Indian players never fail to entertain. The most random things happen when they are involved and all we can do it appreciate their contribution to cricket. How I wish that ball went 5 extra metres for six. Would have blown the tournament wide open and would have been an unforgettable match

Was the only match I missed completely during the tournament. I still regret not even opening cricinfo to check the score. By the time I saw the score, The dream was already gone :(

Oh man, I still wonder how drastically different the entire tournament could've ended up being if Carlos Brathwaite had hit that ball like, 5 meters further. It was incredible.

Then you guys would've faced India at the same venue where you lost by 89 runs(DLS) to India with a slightly better chance to beat them.
