Graphics Card (again!)

Almost_Austwick go for the 7900GS nvidia card, its 9.0 direct X based and is great! or if u want to spend slightly more then go for the 7950 card

by the way if u want to run most newer graphics cards ure motherboard needs to support a PCI E X16 (not to be confused with PCI)

The scan comes back saying that I have a PCI Express graphics slot. Unfortunately, it's unable to advise me as to compatible upgrades.

Which cards will fit it?

However, if I did fancy upgrading my motherboard and processor what would be a good system to look at. I can drop say, around £1200 on motherboard, processor and graphics card.

Cheers

for that price you can buy a new PC, i recommend the pc specilist website, from there your can build you own pc and its really cheap http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/

Just click on "build online" from the top and select either the AMD or the Intel option, i would recomend the intel core 2 due E6700. Also with 2Gig ram at 800mhz. But overall make sure you select a motherboard which has a PCI E X16 slot

I can reccomend pc specialist, thats where i got my pc from. Whats more, they will sell you upgrades in the future, and are sending me out boxes and packaging so i can sell my dual x1950xtx's on ebay.

pc specilist are wicked, they give u a text message when they send the pc off to you

Motherboard
ASUS® P5N-E SLI: Quad-core CPU Ready, NVIDIA® Dual X8 SLI

choose the ASUS® P5N32-E SLI+: Quad-core CPU Ready, NVIDIA® Dual X16 SLI insted because it supports the lates PCI E X16. in truth my friend your nvidia 8000 series cards dont work well on the motherboard you have chosen because you need PCI E X 16

bad luck mate, ATi has absolute disregard to OSS. they don't have drivers that work with it. soo many, OSS things don't work with ATi cards, even 3dmodeling s/w like blender.

I know and its sucks even more knowing that Ubuntu 3d + my grunty lappy = Matrix reloaded:p but it just doesn't work.

You should wait for Ati's dx10 card (r600) to come out. The 8800's will decrease in price by quite a bit, you may even decide to buy the r600!
So my advice is to hang on for around 2 months, it'll be worth it.

Here is a review of HD Radeon 2900 XT from HEXUS. It was astounding to see how well the Raadeon X1950 XTX can match up with GeForce 8800 GTS and HD Radeon 2900 XT in a few case:

EDIT: Here is another excellent and detailed review of ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT 512MB. Some of the above result can be seen in this case too, as well as much more:
