HELP : PC Upgrade

If you think core 2 duo is a bit expensive then you could go for pentium D processor also you don't have to buy gfx card now, you can always wait and buy it after couple of weeks.

Thats what im thinking......my main thing is to play games...and for that i need all the 4 upgrades.....without each other the whole idea of a gaming computer wont be complete.

I would have not bought a new GFX card even if i had a decent one right now, what i have is Geforce4 440 MX which isnt good enough to even run most of the latest games.

So approx according to calculations suggested by leo(I havnt confirmed it with the market rates yet, but im sure they's gonna be a bit cheaper).....

1. Motherboard(Intel 965) will cost me 5K.
2. Processor(Core2 Duo 1.8Ghz) will also cost me 5K.
3. RAM (1GB DDR2) will cost me 2K.
---------------------------------------------------
Total : 12K(Approx.)

Now only the GFX card issue remains, i want to go for a DX10 GFX card as its the future.

Also i wanted to know 1.8Ghz on Core2 Duo....is it fast enough. As in, im set with the notion that more the GHZ, better the CPU...:D. Plz proove me wrong.

ya, 1.8 ghz is very fast.. infact i am running vista on my 1.6 ghz core duo processor laptop... works pretty well...
the GHZ do matter, but because it is of 2 cores, the efficiency is much more...
so, it can do almost double the work a single core 1,8 ghz could do....
basically, both the cores are running at 1.8 ghx each..

Hey I am frm pune and I have bought a new pc a year ago I suggest my config:

Pentium 4 2.66 Ghz
1 GB Memory (512 x 2) upgradeable to 2 GB
Intel D101GGC
ATI Radeon Xpress 200 (Integrated 256 Mb) (good for medium gamers)
Win Xp

The above is my system

I suggest you buy the same motherboard as of mine because you get a gfx card with PCI and with Shader Model 2.0 and it runs most of the modern games. but upgrade the processor to 3ghz or more if you can afford.

I hope it helps.

It might sound funny but...

2 Cores at 1.8Ghz each, that mean, 2 x 1.8Ghz = 3.8Ghz

So what i get Intel Pentium4 3.4 Ghz.....

Wouldnt that be the same thing?

2 x 1.8 = 3.6 lolz....

u wont get that speed, because, the processors are not 100% efficient...
if in a 3.6 ghz proc. u were getting 80 % efficiency that would mean the speed would be 2.88 ghz...

in a dual core, generally, users easily get 1.7 times the speed mentioned, so that would mean around 3.06 ghz.

also, get a future proof processor, in the future, games and applications would be made, which support only dual (OR QUAD) core processors...

lol no.
the thing about frequencies is a thing of past. today, frequencies hardly matter. a 1.8Ghz core2duo can outpace 3.4Ghz Pentium D easily.
infact, whole of core2duo linup outperforms all of pentiums

processor speed today depends a lot on its architecture. cache, performance optimisations, etc etc

One thing i forgot to ask, how many MBs of GFX card should i go for....128/256/512....

Ofcourse anyone would say the highest u can go for bu since bugdet is a problem, i wanted to know what the idea memory for 8500GT?

Also, since i'm replacing my CPU, Motherboard, RAM and GFX card with a much powerful one, i was wondering if there will be any problem of POWER and Heating?

what is your current smps watts???

i think u will need 400 W, because, GFX cards can heat up the systems, and need a lot of power to work well...

yup 400 watts is enough. however, 450W would be safe limit.

as for GFX RAM, i don't think any 8xxx class card comes with less than 256 mb ram.
8500GT comes with 256MB, havn't seen any 85000GT with more than 256MB ram

I dont know about my power thing, maybe the pic below can help. It will be great if u can take a look at it and suggest me.

Ok, finally i paid a visit to Nehru Place today and here's the price list. I checked the prices with 5-6 shops and all quoted aprox. the same rate with Rs. 50-100 more or less.

1. Intel 965 Motherboard = Rs. 5,000
2. Core2 Duo 1.8Ghz = Rs. 5,100
3. Geforce 8500GT 256MB = Rs. 5,200
4. 1GB DDR2 RAM = Rs. 1,800
-----------------------------------
Total = Rs. 17,100

8500GT was really hard to find, one guy quoted Rs. 6,400 while another Rs. 7,200 but i got the price of Rs. 5,200 from 2-3 shops so i'm assuming that the product they are seeling is for real, ofcourse im gonna check each and every part over and over again while the time comes to buy them.

Now what im thinking is that the guy told me that i will need a new cabinet which will have a higher power to support the upgraded hardware. Otherwise the system can overheat and BOOM BOOM. What do u guys suggest?

Another thing is that the guy was telling me that i should go for Intel Dual Core 3GHz with 4MB Cache. B'coz although it is inferior technology, it is better than Core2 Duo 1.8Ghz coz which has only 2MB Cache. So need ur suggestions on this one too.

Another inportant thing i was thinking is that what i get my Motherboard, GFX Card and RAM upgraded while stayingon with Pentium4 1.7Ghz for a while, say 2-3 months. Now why will i do that is b'coz, P4 1.7Ghz is good enough to run most of the latest games. By now going for Core2 Duo 1.8Ghz at this point of time while save me Rs. 5,000(outta a total budget of Rs. 15,000), which i can use to get myself a new cabinet which will have higher power, plus, i get get myself a Combo Drive too, coz my old CD-ROM is almost dead and gone. Then i can wait for 2-3 months and get myself a Core2 Duo. What do u guys say about that?

Well i know these are a lotta things but i need some advice from u guys before i finally go and get my upgrade done.

Waiting for ur replies.
