Hindi Cinema Discussion

Just watched Kurbaan today. For 'jkartik', he must be saying 'Whats new?' after reading this review of mine because I REALLY ENJOYED THE FILM (he thinks I like almost all films):D! Not a comedy or a fun filled film, but it was serious, powerful and kept me hooked to it. And it was smart, which is very important for an Indian film to be. I dont know from where they got their inspirations from (I hear its inspired from some Hollywood films). I havent watched those films, and I enjoyed this one a lot. If you are looking for moments where you can break into that smile, there are not too many. This is different kind of entertainment.

The first 30 odd mins really didnt captivate much. They could have made it in a better way. The Kareena-Saif meeting and it culminating into their romance and marriage should have been handled better. The moment they encounter their neighbors at their new home in New York, the film picks up speed. Since I read the reviews of Saif being a terrorist, I knew it that he was among that group when he took Kareena back into the house and asked everyone else to come out of their hiding. The scene where Vivek argues with Americans over 9/11, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars is just a great dialogue. Thats what I liked about the film. The director doesnt take any particular side over the issue and tries to stay as neutral as possible. For example, Vivek agrees that Americans have been at fault and that lot of lives have been lost among Muslims, yet he doesnt agree with the reaction of the terrorists. Both sides have been shown as being right and wrong. Thats what a smart movie is. Always Indian cinema has tried to show one side as being right and the other side as being wrong and its the right side that wins. Here in the end, you feel for Saif but you also want him to die because what he did was wrong. Also the coffee scene where Kareena passes on a piece of paper with important info to Vivek was terrific. My heart was almost in my mouth. The background score really enhanced that scene. The climax was very well done which is unusual these days for Indian films because they start off well but taper off to usually end with a mediocre or unbearable climax.

Kareena should not laugh. She looks horrible while laughing as always. When the movie got serious, Kareena did far better. Off late, she has been featuring in films that I like (e.g. Jab We Met, Kurbaan). Saif was cool, and got into the role effortlessly. The chemistry was good between them. That love scene was 'BS hype for nothing'. Vivek was the surprise. He was the best of the lot. In the end, he is the guy that you take home with you more than Saif-Kareena or others. The boy looks to have made his comeback well.

Sai, rate the movie out of 5 please :p

We all know how horrible Kareena lately is after her size 00 thing.

Saif? Just one thing ":facepalm"

What's better than watching 2012 twice? once with college friends and then with Dad :D

I would give it 4/5. Nothing more than that!

In fact Kareena is not size zero anymore. She has put on the required weight to look healthier than 'size zero'. In the romantic scenes, the girl shows so much artificiality and it looks as if she is doing her first film. She just smiles too much to the point where it gets irritating!

Waiting for sid's review...:D

saisrini80 added 3 Minutes and 54 Seconds later...

Reckon' this movie would be funny?

This trailer is interesting. Shimit Amin-Yashraj give you more hope after their last offering 'Chak De India' was a classic in Indian cinema. But Ranbir pull this off well? Hope so..

4/5 ???

the plot holes are just too obvious.
after saif's real identity is revealed, kareena IMMEDIATELY deciphers how he used her to get to New York "Officially". EVEN how he got hold of her social security numbers and placing the "INDIAN NEIGHBORHOOD" advertisement inside the newspaper. in reality, at that moment any person would've been shocked out of their brains and it would take some time to accept the fact that its the reality and not a bad dream.

The Coffee scene was pretty dumb even though it managed to create a thrilling moment. the paper is so evident after Om Puri takes the cup and yet nobody notices it.

the scene where saif and the other actor are stopped for checking(disposing wifes body) is so stupid. first of all....the expression on the actors face was OTT. and he was reacting like an emotional indian cricket fan angry at the aussies after the SCG rather than a high profile terrorist.
and WTF !! the guy shoots the officer and no one even calls for a backup.:doh. in reality, choppers and roadblocks would be all over the place and he would have his ass handed to him.

Vivek Oberoi not informing the FBI and mouthing the dialogue "I'll Handle it myself" was even more dumb. :facepalm

and i never knew that defending the 9/11 attacks and criticizing the Iraq Invasion is enough to enter a terrorist organization especially just days before their "Plan" is about to be executed which they must have been planing for months. Oberoi couldnt even handle a gun properly and he was one of the key bombers. :doh

Saif ali Khan is in the MOST WANTED list of the FBI and yet he roams around freely in the streets of New York without even a hint of disguise.
just a goatee is not enough my friends.

the FBI officer casually gets up after the terrorist explodes himself in the station as though its all good and the worst part is NO PARAMEDICS in the area.

one good thing is that even the lead actors were getting shot / injuring themselves and reacted realistically unlike the typical "no bullet can hurt me" attitude
evident in our movies.

BTW, am waiting for Cricketman's Verdict on this film. there are a lot of dialogues and scenes
which might hurt his American side. :D :p

I will never watch this movie.

Don't want my country to be seen as terrorist sympathizers, which we are absolutely not.

Posted my reply within the spoiler, in BOLD.;)

Thats not really a loophole. I agree that many people would be shocked out of their brains but its possible for someone to be as alert as Kareena and start thinking about how he got into New York, into the neighborhood, etc

The Coffee scene was pretty dumb even though it managed to create a thrilling moment. the paper is so evident after Om Puri takes the cup and yet nobody notices it.

I agree here. I thought atleast Kirron Kher would notice the paper but even she didnt. This was a sure loophole in that scene. But as I said, the acting and the background score really raised the excitement level during that scene.

the scene where saif and the other actor are stopped for checking(disposing wifes body) is so stupid. first of all....the expression on the actors face was OTT. and he was reacting like an emotional indian cricket fan angry at the aussies after the SCG rather than a high profile terrorist.

This one too, I agree with.:laugh Also the girl "Salma"'s body was not identifiable (they were not able to ID the body to a person). How silly is that? In the US, every person can be ID'ed to atleast some fake profile unless someone within the security tampered with the systems and removed all details about that person from the systems.

Vivek Oberoi not informing the FBI and mouthing the dialogue "I'll Handle it myself" was even more dumb. :facepalm

Vivek went on this mission deciding to handle things himself right? Initially when the editor asked information about the strong lead that Vivek had, he refused to mention it to the police stating that it could become a problem for Kareena.

and i never knew that defending the 9/11 attacks and criticizing the Iraq Invasion is enough to enter a terrorist organization especially just days before their "Plan" is about to be executed which they must have been planing for months. You're giving the terrorists too much respect. At the last moment when they are close to attacking and they lose a big guy in their team, they somehow wanted to have in someone as replacement even though he wasnt as good (something was better than nothing). Saif was the guy who placed so much confidence in Vivek because he felt that the emotions shown by Vivek was enough and Saif had a big influence in the team. Saif was already carried away from his path by the love for Kareena. So technically his mind didnt think like the sharp terrorist that we are used to seeing. So I felt it was not unreal.

Saif ali Khan is in the MOST WANTED list of the FBI and yet he roams around freely in the streets of New York without even a hint of disguise.
just a goatee is not enough my friends.

Dont remember this properly...

the FBI officer casually gets up after the terrorist explodes himself in the station as though its all good and the worst part is NO PARAMEDICS in the area.

The director was smart. He didnt go into too much details and he moved on quickly to the next parts. Maybe the paramedics came in, but it wasnt shown. I have seen people surviving bomb blasts even though they were very close to the bomb's source (e.g. I recently watched a film "Vantage Point" where a bomb is placed in that huge crowd and a guy is so near to the bomb's location and yet he survives the blast).

There was no connection between India and Kurbaan in the film. It was mostly about America and its problems with Iraq, Afghanistan, etc with regards to killing people, etc. The only connection between India and the film was Saif and Kareena worked at a college in India, fell in love and then shifted to America.

Booked my tickets for De Dhana Dhan's evening show tomorrow.

I presume it's neither going to be great, nor bad. It'll be an okay movie.
