I have started a new save with Essex. The first season wasn't all that promising - I got promoted in the CC, just failed to make the play off in the 40 over competition, finished fourth in the Twenty20 group stage and had a disaster in the Challenge Trophy.
The Essex team at the start is interesting. Kaneria is obviously a match-winner and I found Masters to be a very good bowler too, but there is not much after that. Most of the all-rounders in the squad make for very poor bowlers, Ten Doeschate and Napier can be very good occasionally but are usually substandard whilst Middlebrook is quite accurate but his average was around the 45 mark last season. Wright, Palladino and Tudor were decent seamers in the CC but certainly won't be good enough for the top tier. Meanwhile, the batting is very good when everyone is on form even with Cook away with England for the majority of the time. Chopra, Pettini and Gallian all are decent openers and the middle order is very strong with Ten Doeschate, Bopara and Flower plus the likes of Napier and Foster further down the order. Tudor can also be useful with occasional quick runs.
At the end of the season, I had a bit of a clear out. In came the experienced Loye and Joyce to further bolster the batting order (Gallian and Westley were released, Flower retired and Bopara is now England contracted) along with youngster Jacob. On the bowling side things, S Mahmood came in along with Kartik (in place of Kaneria so I could afford to bring Mahmood in) and young spinner Highton.
