I wanted to play one-dayers till September - Ganguly

SS Das,it was the same for Deep Dasgupta too when he was not selected for the World Cup.

No dear.you getting it wrong. We were talking about one and only great Siv Sundar Das.He used to open the ininngs for india in test matches.;)
You are talking about great wicket keeper Deep Das Gupta who open the ininngs for Bengal in ICL.:D

When Jayasuriya and 38 Year Old Legends are still batting like Young Lads, I Don't see any problem with a 35 Year Old. If Ganguly's been dropped, I'll slap, .... who's that....Yeah!, Vengasarkar..
Jayasuriya and 38 year old legends? What are you talking about. The number of players the age of Jayasuriya playing international cricket at the highest level can probably be counted on one hand.

And you'll notice that Jaya is still really athletic and a decent fielder whereas Ganguly is no where close to that.

God, the way they treat these veterans, I know we are trying to build a team for WC2011 but we should have let him play till September, he probably will not play another ODI again...:(

Let him not play anymore ODI's. He should have retired earlier. We just cant have two fielders in the team who are very slow moving. Sachin's reflexes have also slowed down, Dravid's more visible than Sachin, and Ganguly's is the worst of the lot. You cant drop Sachin, you crib when Ganguly is dropped and almost the same with Dravid. How can you then be a good fielding side if these players are retained? You cant always win matches with the bat. Even when your batting form deserts you, fielding at times gets you close to the opposition.

Ok, you win, I reckon we should let him play just1 more ODI just to give him a send off in ODI's :)

Replacing them with Gautam Gambhir, who is a poor fielder, is hypocritical though.

To be honest regardless of the cricketer Ganguly is and has been for India, India have to play for the benifit of the team and I'm sure Sourav would probably like India to do whats best for India even if it means he's played his last ODI game.

The value the veterans bring is arguable. For example, if they were playing in the current tour, our fielding would have been shown up, especially at the MCG. Just against Sri Lanka, we were able to get an advantage based on our fielding--something we wouldn't have with the oldies around. Also, playing the likes of Sharma and Uthappa will allow them to understand their own batting better and can only help us out.

what do you have to say about gambhir, munaf patel and the likes ??
even pathan, ishant sharma etc are MODERATELY OK....
yuvraj has been pathetic compared to his standards and
is no better than the above mentioned.......sachin's slowing down too......

so...we still dont have a great fielding side do we ??

Gautam Gambhir is 10 times the fielder Ganguly is, if not more. He's also quick across the field, unlike Dada.

You are over rating Gambhir's fielding. He is only slightly better than Ganguly and he is very error prone. The area in which he is better in running, as you mentioned.

The likes? I don't recall anyone by that name playing for India. Here was the last XI we put up:

1. Tendulkar -- quick across field, good arm
2. Gambhir -- quick across field, decent fielder
3. Uthappa -- really good fielder
4. Rohit Sharma -- really good fielder
5. Yuvraj Singh -- really good fielder (in a bit of bad form, albeit)
6. MS Dhoni -- keeper
7. Irfan Pathan -- good arm, good mover, good ground fielder for a pace bowler
8. Praveen Kumar -- not sure
9. Harbhajan Singh -- quick across the field
10. Munaf Patel -- poor fielder
11. Ishant Sharma -- good ground fielder for his height

The only real weak links are Munaf and Ishant. Gambhir is a very decent in-fielder.

No way. Ganguly has dived over so many balls that were hit hard just away from him. Gambhir is far better than Ganguly as a fielder. When he stops something on the field, he doesn't look surprised about doing it.

And even if we discount fielding, their athleticism isn't only useful when fielding. Ganguly, after more than a decade of international cricket, still hasn't learned how to run between wickets properly. His decreasing fitness means quick singles become even rarer. Guess who run the quick singles best? Australia. Who put up 300 with great regularity in the recent past? Australia. 4s and 6s isn't necessarily the best way to score quick runs--after all--6 singles an over would get you to 300.

IMO, Gambhir is better than Dravid and Dada put together.

I think that you are mistaking good for average. Tendulkar does not have a good arm on an international scale. Gambhir is quick but error prone. Uthappa is also error prone, despite being athletic. Rohit Sharma and Yuvraj are both good fielders. I cannot comment too much on the bowlers as I myself have stated that the importance of the fielding of strike bowlers is not important. However, Praveen Kumar has looked poor in his first two games, but it is far too premature to make a judgement on his fielding.
