I find this a pretty bad idea. If they wanted to trim the teams at least make it to 12 teams.

ICC confirms 10 teams for next two World Cups
Sidharth Monga
April 4, 2011

The ICC has confirmed today that the next two World Cups will be 10-team events. The 2015 edition of the premier 50-over tournament will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, and the 2019 World Cup will be played in England.

To compensate, the World Twenty20 has been expanded to 16 teams, giving six Associate or Affiliate members a chance to play in a premier world event every two year

After the 2019 event, a relegation and promotion system will be introduced to the newly conceptualised ODI league. That will give those teams hope to qualify for future World Cups.

I think ICC should go for 12, Ireland and Netherlands played better cricket then Bangladesh. So they should get a chance to take part again

zimbabwe were absolutely terrible, it's also worth noting that the windies can be lumped in with them and bangladesh.

BNG at least managed to beat a top 8 team, though yeah, were beaten by the windies themselves.

total tripe and completely unfair on ireland. will only add momentum to an exodus of their best players, you can bet england will be sniffing around dockrell and stirling soon. if england go into a world cup with 3 irish players, are they markedly better than an ireland team with the 3 best english players?

tough call. (admittedly hypothetical at this point)

Good thing imo. When you know that people skip games with minnows which are supposedly "World Cup" matches, the most important matches people should be watching..cut them out.

And the 10th spot will promote greater competition between the Associates. It will hurt China's chances in 2019 which they were targeting for but like I said, there's still a spot available through competition between the associates..right?

Just make 9, 10 and the winners of the ICC qualifying tournament (or whatever they use these days) qualify for the last two spots.

If Ireland have no chance despites being higher ranked than Zimbabwe who will get an auto entry, then this is unacceptable and something has to be done about this.

Irish twitters:
* Gary Wilson: What is going on? Excuse the French but that is a sh*t decision! Not a world cup now, just a trophy with 10 teams. Heads up their own a***s
* Trent Johnston: The ICC have certainly made my decision to retire after the 2012 T/20 World Cup very easy, thanks for the memories... #cricket #icc.
* Boyd Rankin: Thanks ICC!! What does Irish cricket got to do?? Shambles!!
* William Porterfield: Trying to compensate it with 16 teams in the T20, is that cuz they make more dollars by having a few more teams in this format by any chance!!#icc
* Niall O'Brien: mate just got of the field and I'm gutted with this news! This could halt the progress of irish cricket beyond repair. So sad now
* Barry Chambers (media manager): ICC - no morals - no sense of fair play or natural justice. They are a disgrace and unfit to govern

How will this benefit cricket is beyond me. WTF is going on?

I swear if England team gets any current Irish players (specially Porterfield or KO Obrien) because of this I'll lose all respect for ECB/ICC and hope their own people won't support the team and cricket can die a slow death over there.

South Africa or New Zealand can step up as Aussie's new rivals.

Should just get the ODI league in place now, totally unfair for the associate to not even get the chance to qualify for the WC. This could well set their game back quite a few years.

If ICC reduce the world cup to 10 teams there needs to be some sort of Football Style Qualification system over the 3/4 years before the world cup.

So with the new format does that mean all 10 teams will play each other??, that could be a pretty long tournament as well. I've always said right from the start it should have been 12 teams. That way you can get rid of the crap minnows like Kenya but keep a couple of good minnows like Ireland. Its a joke really as both Bangladesh and Zimbabwe were crap in this tournament, Ireland performed way better than both of them and they get kicked out :facepalm

----------

At least give them the chance to qualify in a series vs Zimbabwe and Bangladesh or something.
