India in England Jun-Sept 2014

ahh yeah, totally forgot about that, so what's the reason then? it's completely perplexing. Ashwin isn't exactly a great spinner but he is better than Jadeja, really weird on the BCCIs part.

It is Dhoni and his wierd ways. Irrespective of what happens in this series, he has to step down as the test captain.

Its because after Ashwin's wicketless 1st test in SAfrica, he was replaced by Jadeja for the 2nd test. And Sir got a 6fer in the first innings.

With regards to Jadeja v Ashwin, its worth noting that in general the person in possession of the spot is the one that has to do something to get dropped rather than the person waiting doing something to get picked.

Jadeja isn't having poor tests so isn't really in the "needs to be dropped" category.

Jadeja is a better spinner overseas. Does the containing job better than Ashwin, adds more value in the field (got enough decent slip fielders already).

Binny at 8 is quite a luxury; he's definitely good enough to bat as high as 6. Good enough to be above Jadeja IMO, but putting a man with two Ranji triple tons at 8 is perhaps a bit disrespectful.

I think part of the reason why Binny was underbowled is that the opportunity to bowl him never arrived. The new ball bowlers did well, and then Binny got the ball before lunch to bowl around the 40 over mark when the ball wasn't doing anything. Then that post-lunch spell by Ishant probably pushed Dhoni into bowling his strike bowlers more when ideally he'd have turned to Binny and rested the main quicks.

By Tea England were 205/7 with 17 overs to the new ball. Bowling Binny then would look defensive. Dhoni was trying to captain aggressively. So instead of using Binny to fill in overs till the new ball, he attacked right away.

Then the new ball became due, and Binny wasn't going to suddenly get the new ball. Then Anderson and Root happened, and turning to Binny with just 1 wicket to get would also seem like taking a step back and making life easy for England. Finally Binny got the ball when all the strike bowlers were exhausted.

He will probably bowl more at Lords.

I don't remember where exactly it was, think it was the post-game interview, but Dhoni said that they feel Jadeja could get more out of the rough as he is a left-arm spinner, I don't exactly buy into that... and he clearly couldn't, 2 part time off spinners in Moeen and Root were getting more turn than him.

Since the 2nd Test in South Africa, Jadeja hasn't delivered the goods, he had a horrid time in New Zealand, picking up 3 wickets in 2 games and obviously has gone wicketless in the 1st Test here in England now, that's enough to be dropped for me.

yeah .. dropping someone after 3 tests, one of which was played on a placid track doesn't make a lot of sense.

We dropped Ashwin after 4 overseas Tests, that made a lot of sense...

In India (Avg/Econ)

Ashwin (24.12/2.83)
Jadeja (19.85/2.03)

Outside India (Avg/Econ)

Ashwin (74.77/3.20)
Jadeja (54.55/2.63)

Straightforward statistics really.

Its too small a sample to bring average and economy into play IMO.

Ashwin is a better batsmen, and a more attacking spinner than Jadeja. Jadeja's entry into tests itself was not a "its time he came in" thing. He is a bits and pieces cricketer like Binny. Ashwin might have his off days, but I would risk with a specialist spinner than on a bits and pieces spinner. If we had Mishra or Ojha here, I would have wanted them to play. But with only Ashwin, they have to pick him over Jadeja. And stats to compare Ashwin and Jadeja is a waste of time right now, because they havent played as much to do that kind of a comparison

With the bat, Jadeja just throws it around and is lucky if he gets a few runs (thats what his approach has been). Ashwin can stick in there and bat sensibly.

Who'd look best in gloves?

England's latest batting line-up featured nine men with Test centuries, as well as Liam Plunkett, scorer of two first-class tons, and Jimmy'Gower' Anderson. It follows, then, that England should not be short of runs. What I believe they need to do is pick the best gloveman available to them. Exactly who that is is open to debate - is it James Foster or Chris Read? Perhaps a younger option, like Michael Bates or even Adam Rouse. Bates is the nearest thing to a specialist wicket-keeper left who plays regularly in the county game, although he often loses out to Adam Wheater's superior batting. The little I have seen of him behind the stumps has been completely faultless.

So what do you think? Should Matt Prior make way for someone with sturdier gauntlets? Should it be Read or Foster, or perhaps someone younger like Michael Bates or Adam Rouse? Or is it time for Jos Buttler (hint: it's not)
