India in England Jun-Sept 2014

Cricinfo: Ashwin possibly in, Dhawan possibly out for Manchester

Varun Aaron might be coming in for Pankaj. I honestly have no issues with this. Some extra pace might be good for us. Although, it might have been better if he replaced Shami instead

Holy moly cow... If what they say in this article is true, India's thinking is totally jumbled and I dont see them even saving the series from hereon. Why did you take Gambhir to England if you want to have a makeshift opener? Might have as well taken other specialist middle order batsmen. If you dont want Dhawan, play Gambhir. And for the slip catching, Ashwin is safer than the rest like Jadeja and Rahane. He was initially given good exposure in the slips before he was dropped. Now that Ashwin comes back in, catching in slips will get slightly better (Ashwin is not in the league of great slip catchers, but he is decent which is good in the current Indian setup).

Hope some sense prevails and India dont go to makeshift openers. I would rather give Dhawan another chance than to go for a makeshift option. That will also give England further confirmation that they completely messed us up in Southampton, which we dont want to do.[DOUBLEPOST=1407256197][/DOUBLEPOST]
Pujara has pretty much been playing the role of an opener in every game - the first innings of all 3 matches, he came out to bat within 7 overs. So asking him to open might not be such a terrible idea, if it gives us more flexibility in the middle order

No no... Keep Pujara one down. Only if we dont have a specialist opener available do we look for makeshift options. We have Gambhir as backup right now. Going in in the first few overs at the loss of a wicket is different from going in as a makeshift opener. Pujara is already under pressure due to his inability to "convert his starts into big ones". Lets not put further pressure on him.

I still find it pretty hillarious that Anderson is not being charged. On one of the Cricinfo articles, they have mentioned that Anderson actually did admit that he pushed and swore at Jadeja. If that is the case, how the hell is he not guilty? Why do you need the video footage when the guy is admitting to his mistake.

BCCI is pushing Dave Richardson (ICC) to file an appeal. This is going to get interesting. Most likely BCCI with their power could successfully push Richardson. And I agree with you. The guy has admitted that he has pushed Jadeja. That itself amounts to some kind of an action. If they are not able to confirm whether he did it provoked or unprovoked, they should punish both these guys. Anderson again got into a tussle with Rahane in the third test. The guy seems a perennial troublemaker.

Then Rahane would have to play at 3 and Rohit at 5 to keep Kohli at 4.Well,doesn't it looks like changing too many things?

The issue here is .. we don't have a good replacement for Dhawan. The article clearly says that Gambhir was struggling in the nets. Is he worthy of being brought in as a replacement opener ? Ideally, I would give Dhawan a go in the next two games as well.

But IF he has to be dropped, Pujara as opener followed by Rahane-Kohli-Rohit-Dhohi-Jadeja-Ashwin wouldn't be the worst idea. You would just be adapting according to the situation which is not a bad idea.

99.9% sure this will never happen though :)

So our ODI and T20 squad has been announced and couple of new faces in there. The wonder boy Sanju Samson gets his first call-up for India. Interesting to see that injury to Amit Mishra has brought Karn Sharma in the squad who has been doing well in the IPL and recent A tour in Australia. I am not sure why have we picked Dhawal Kulkarni because he does not look like an International standard bowler.

MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Stuart Binny, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Mohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Umesh Yadav, Dhawal Kulkarni, Sanju Samson (wk), Karn Sharma

Highest wicket taker on the A tour. But I agree .. he never looked like an international standard bowler

Who knows? Based on the initial few looks, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar looked even worse. But how he has proved lot of people wrong.

Having Samson so early on an international tour could prove to be good if he doesnt play, bad if he does play.

Actually Kumar's first ODI was sensational (as was his first T20 also against Pak). Still remember the brilliant inswinger to bowl Hafeez off his first international delivery. Don't remember the stuff after that though :P

Not talking about his international appearance. The looks of him in domestic cricket (I saw him mainly in IPL) was highly unflattering. I never thought this guy would go on to become as reliable a bowler for India as he is currently.

I know its too early, but it'd be good if the selectors earmark Samson as Dhoni's successor and try to give him as many chances as possible with the national team when Dhoni is still there. And good call up for Karn Sharma, who has done consistently well in IPL. I know its not the best barometer, but he has done well across seasons and deserves a chance.

Bhuvaneshwar should have been rested. Yadav should play most of the games.

Samson in the ODI squad might be a wild card pick that could prove to be the X-factor for us if he clicks leading into the WC. Strokeplayers generally enjoy Australian conditions and this lad has all the strokes. What I`m not sure of is his temperament and endurance which might improve as he gains international experience. Its an aggressive pick and the selectors have to be lauded. Yadav in the ODI squad is also a step in the right direction. The guy has never got opportunities consistently to improve or prove himself. He has played one or two games here and there and been out of the squad. As a quickie, you need to get into rhythm and this in and out stuff dampens it. I would rest Bhuvi for the first couple of ODIs since it would be prudent to look at this series as a team building effort for the WC rather than otherwise. Also, Rahane has to be a permanent member of the ODI side with the promise he has shown in tests against quality pace. He might not win you games in the subcontinent but will be vital in Australia/NZ. My team for the ODIs;

Dhawan/Samson
Rohit/Samson
Rahane
Kohli
Raina
Dhoni
Jadeja/Binny
Ashwin
Bhuvi/Mohit
Shami/Mohit
Umesh

Coming back to the Manchester test, reports suggest that Aaron could replace Pankaj and Ashwin might play. Hope we make some aggressive selections in this test, just like England did after the Lords defeat.

India dont have the luxury of resting a bowler, farless Kumar who had done well thus far!

So Dhoni has again criticized ICC and David Boon in the pre match conference regarding Anderson- Jadeja issue. I have followed Dhoni's career as a player and as a captain very closely and I have never seen him taking this kind of stubborn approach towards any kind of issue.
