India in England Jun-Sept 2014

I had this conversation with someone last week and said Matt Prior about 50 times only for them to still to keep saying "I just don't see an obvious candidate." without ever telling me why Prior couldn't do it.

it was barmy on here that I first saw it suggested but really, why not? guy frequently knuckles down, he's good with the gloves and involved in both the fielding and batting efforts, he seems to have a lot of respect in the dressing room as he was named as one of the people that tried to sort KP out last year, he's world class, experienced and still has 3-4 years in him.

I've changed my mind. :D
He's dropping far too many catches; can't keep him in the team.

Prior and Cook are both liabilities; and Broad and Anderson are being bowled into the ground.

England might actually play better if Anderson and Broad each got a game off to rest (maybe play one of the two for each of the coming tests?), Cook was dropped (or atleast rid of captaincy) and Foster/Read came in for Prior.

England could also do with picking the players they seem to have a vendetta against (specifically Nick Compton, given how KP hasn't been scoring runs in any format since being dropped)

Kerrigan wouldn't improve the quality of the attack much; but a spinner who can carry the burden of 20-40 overs each innings without conceding too much can help the quicks stay fresh.

The real problem seems to be is that England doesn't trust their bench strength. India picking an unchanged XI makes sense - players are reasonably fresh and their balance was working. Why were England unchanged? What happened to rotating the quicks?

EDIT: Oh, and MSD hates Binny. Takes forever to bring him on to bowl, then ignores the catch. Really only thing Binny is able to do to secure his spot in the team is score runs when he gets to bat because MSD isn't giving him much of a chance in the field.

MSD doesn't hate Binny. He perhaps doesn't like Binny as a player. He also doesn't like Amit Mishra. Well, Ganguly also didn't like Murli Karthik.

No. No reason to drop Stokes.

Till now, he has not contributed with the bat, which was one of the main reasons why he was picked over Jordan, and is not as good as Jordan with the ball. You cannot have 2 bowlers who hit the deck hard in English conditions. Stokes is fine as a number 6 batsman/5th bowler, similar to his role in the Ashes, but he is certainly not 4th bowler material, atleast for now.

Good thing for India is, the first innings lead of England is very slender, and we have already overhauled it in our second innings. From here on, whatever we score has to be chased down by England in the 4th innings. India has to bat well, really well. But its not out of our reach and can be done if the batsmen apply themselves.

Tough luck, Dhawan! But I believe they have given India a strong start here. Need to capitalise.

Can't believe that Vijay is playing this assured against short pitched bowling. And his gameplay outside the off stump seems to have vastly improved. He leaves a lot lot more now. That means he eats up a lot of balls, but that helps the rest take advantage.

Dhawan's wicket throwing ability fascinates me.

It was the right time to push the scoring rate up a bit. Dhawan started at the right time. Tough luck that he found the fielder. They had seen off the new ball (12 overs or so) and they needed to get a move on.

This is not an ODI, is it? Dhawan got off to a fine start and should have stayed there!

We needed to get a 100-run opening stand for once here. Dhawan could`ve done what Warner did in the Ashes or what Sehwag of the past used to do. We cannot be complacent here. The wicket is not what it was in the first innings. 300 is chase-able in the second innings here, especially with the long English batting lineup.

Oh dear, a good start wasted. Murali has impressed with his "staying at the wicket" ability while Dhawan is doing the opposite. I guess Gambhir will be getting his hopes high

You need a move on even in test matches. The longer you stay in there and waste balls without scoring runs, the more pressure you put on yourself. And more so for a batsman like Dhawan who is naturally a very aggressive player. Vijay is the kind of batsman who seems like he can bat long periods without scoring much runs. Not the same with Dhawan. If he gets bogged down, it would be easier to induce a false stroke from him sooner than later.

Lol where are the English players?

Oh glad they decided to show up.
