Match Report & Presentation Ceremony
Sorry guys, forgot screenshots of the scorecard!
One of the greatest series comes to an end as India emerges victorious by 37 runs in the final ODI at New Delhi. Pakistan gave a valiant fight but could not make it in the end as India closed the doors on them with a great spinning display.
India scored 262 runs on this wicket full of turn. One thought that this total wasnt enough to put pressure on Pakistan. And going by the opening start, one thought India might well slide to the third defeat of the series! But at 71-0, Khan bowled Hameed with a beautiful devliery and then trapped Butt LBW to bring Pakistan down to 71-2. Then it was a spinners show and Kumble first bowled Shoaib Malik with a top spinner which Malik missed. Inzamam charged down the wicket to Harbhajan and was bowled. When it looked like Youhana and Younis Khan would restore normalcy, Youhana was caught at the deep cover boundary. And at 99 when Younis Khan hit a Harbhajan doosra straight into his stumps, Pakistan were on the brink of humiliation.
But as it always happens, some one has to bring a twist into this tale and it was provided by Afridi and Razzaq. Both played brilliant cricket, picking up singles and also crashing that odd boundary. But the Indian part timers aided by Tendulkar bowled a tight line and kept increasing the required run rate. Finally in the end, the endurance of both Razzaq and Afridi gave up as they got out in unnecessary ways. Finally, India wrapped up the match, becoming the deserved winners by 37 runs.
Presentation Ceremony:
Shastri: What a series this has been? Absolutely amazing.. Fortunes fluctuating throughout the series. Now lets get down to the presentation ceremony. I would like to call upon Inzamam Ul Haq to collect the losers cheque of Rs.50,000. So Inzy, must be really disappointed?
Inzy: YES. We never thought we would be out for 225. Our batsman played badly in the start and put us out of the match. India played very well and they deserved to win this one!!
Shastri: Where did you think it went wrong?
Inzy: When we were 99-6.
Shastri: Bad luck Inzy. Now for the Man of the Match award. A tough one really. But in the end, it goes to Anil Kumble for his good bowling performance in the Pakistani innings.
(Anil collects Rs.5,000 from the dias)
Shastri: So Anil, how does this feel?
Anil:This is right up there among the best. Beating Pakistan is always special and I am very happy that I could contribute my part.
Shastri: Did you think the pitch played any part in the Pakistani top order collapse?
Anil: I dont think it played a physical part. It mentally disarranged the minds of the Pakistanis and they were confused on what plan to adopt to negate the spinners.
Shastri: Thanks and congrats Anil. Now for the Man of the series award. Again, a tough choice. But it goes to the person who started the series with a bang with two consecutive centuries -
Shoaib Malik
Malik: Could have been more sweeter had Pakistan won the series. Anyways, happy that my form has improved over the past few series.
Shastri: Now for the Most Valuable Player of the series award. It goes to Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin: This award feels very good with the team's series win. Would love to contribute more towards such wins.
Shastri: Now for the big one! May I call upon Ganguly to receive the Pepsi ODI trophy from Dr.Abdul Kalam, the President of India
Shastri: Congrats Ganguly. Before you go to celebrate, how does this win mean to you?
Ganguly: One among the best. As I always say, beating Pakistan is really special and we are very happy with this victory here. It should boost the confidence of the squad.
Shastri: Who do you think turned the match today?
Ganguly: I feel it was Khan with those first two wickets who brought us back in the game when Pakistan threatened to run away.
Shastri: Thanks Ganguly. You may go now. Thats all we have from the Ferozshah Kotla. Hope you enjoyed our coverage of the test and the ODI series. Till the next tournament, its bye bye from our studios.
