India Team Discussion

Not trying to just blindly act as an 'Ashwin fanboy' here (which I am clearly not), but seriously did people even read his tweet(s) properly? He meant "the hype and expectations around CSK's return after the two year ban could possibly match the hype/expectations around Manchester United's return to the playing field after that Air Disaster". The mention of that Air Disaster just started triggering uneasiness among many people (who find such a thing sensitive) but he did not put the people involved in that incident down in anyway. He used it as a kind of 'metaphor'.

We as human beings, have just entered the phase of "hyper sensitivity" and get offended by harmless comments.:rolleyes

It's not about putting that people down, it's trying to put CSK on that Level.

How much better can that man get?

For me, he is steps ahead of Sachin(equal to Sachin in the mid to late 90's) and any other ODI batsmen that I have seen bat. He has made the number 3 slot his for a long time to come, just hope the amount of cricket he plays doesn't affect his chances of getting injured.

Well I did read it and I'm sorry to let you know that the return of the two clubs is incomparable. One was a return after a tragedy that truly rocked the roots of perhaps the most famous club in sports today and the other is the return of a franchise that is one of the most followed teams in perhaps cricket's greatest carnival, but after a case of corruption.

Even if you happen to keep aside the comparison between Manchester Utd and CSK, it would take only a moron like Ashwin to put himself on a pedestal that bares no resemblance to the current scenario. I'm sure in his head though he looks like Beckham and strikes like Rooney!

Only if he could bowl half descent in limited overs and actually bowl a meaningful spell outside the sub-continent in a test match! I won't be surprised if by next year he gets dropped from the CSK/RPS playing XI!

You still haven't got it. It is not about "from where the two clubs are coming from" (as in one coming from a tragedy and the other from a case of corruption leading to a suspension). Its about the fan following and the passion that these two teams have enjoyed, and now with CSK returning after a 2 year hiatus, the hype surrounding their comeback is felt to be comparable to the hype that ManU had when they came back from the tragedy (as per Ashwin).

Regarding your other comment, of course he is going to get dropped soon. But not for his talk. But for his performances. His performances have again dipped alarmingly and he is indeed struggling to maintain the consistency after a second coming that he had in recent times. For that matter, even Jadeja is bad. India seriously need to invest in Kuldeep Yadav and other finger spinners who turn the ball a lot more.

CSK is the best team ever, We are fasting and burning candles for it's return. Hopefully Surely it will win IPL this time, then EPL, La Liga and then UEFA Champions League.
Lol, nailed it Jack!

I have got it. You're comparing apples and oranges. I'm talking about (as per Ashwin) their return comparable to the Man Utd. return. The fact that he puts himself on a pedestal so high and actually thinks the two are comparable is a JOKE!

Nothing would give me more pride than to see an Indian franchise/club become a name as esteemed as Man Utd. but at this present moment in time, it's like comparing Rishabh Pant to Don Bradman! Only a moron like Ashwin will do that.

Why does a cricket franchise need to become like a football franchise, one is a global sport other is limited to a few nations.Think CSK is popular as it is in its sport, doesnt need much than to perform as previously it had.

Really Indian stars have identity issues anything has to be compared to something foreign and not let it evolve on its own for itself.

I mean if you tell someone to make ramayana they will try to compare and make it like avatar and fail. While if they had ramayan for ramayan it would have been epicly better.

Its inevitable. I mean, Ashwin has been on the "CSK compared to ManU" thing even when CSK were playing and won those IPL titles. I remember him making a comment about this comparison during one of those IPL finals that CSK won way back in 2010/11. He has it in his mind because he watches soccer and is probably passionate about ManU. Just like how when we watch a lot of Hollywood films and then we watch an Indian film which triggers thoughts/emotions inside us about a Hollywood film that we had watched, we will compare it because its what comes to our mind. The Western world has always set the benchmarks in sports/entertainment and in many other things that such comparisons will be inevitable.

Came across this good article
Coach, not captain, must be the team boss - Rediff.com Cricket

I am heavily inclined to agree with this author. This entire fiasco of Kumble-Kohli and the experiences of various captains of India before Kohli should give the Indian cricket administrators the idea that the culture needs to be changed and the coach should be given bigger powers than captain and made more accountable for the team performance. This is again not just about aping other sports where the coach exudes greater power (those sports have the ideal setup where the player on the field focuses on their own performance, while the coach worries about strategy and all from behind the scenes). Maybe the MCC could give some thought about this and see how they can reverse this.

As mentioned in the above article, the captain is also one of the players in the XI and when the captain suffers a dip in form/performance, things get extremely complicated where he is not in a position to command his team (i.e. he is not able to preach what he himself is not able to successfully implement). Whereas a coach does not play in the middle, and so the coach can still command his players and not worry about "walking the talk". And when the captain himself is competing for a place in the team, it makes no sense for him to be given "absolute powers" where he decides who should coach the team and who should be playing in the team. We saw this under Dhoni too, where Dhoni struggled with his form and yet he had to play since he is the captain. We have seen thousands of cases where the team is inefficient because they have a non-performing captain who cannot be dropped because well, he is the 'captain'.

Maybe cricket as a sport needs to give serious thought into this and strip the captain of certain powers and give those powers to the coach/mentor.

55, 41, 86 three scores by Manish Panday so far in South Africa triseries. If this does not count I am not sure what counts. He should be in the Indian team
