India Team Discussion

Shastri has the support if Kohli! Do you want a repeat if the Greg Chappel saga?

It's not about Chappell, Ganguly, Kohli, Kumble or Shastri. This is about pure unadulterated power. I don't care who has it, it's always a bad mindset because if that one individual is wrong, the whole team will suffer and it's impossible to always be right.

The appointment of Shastri was bad enough, but expected. However, adding Zaheer Khan and Rahul Dravid adds more engines in the wagon and the latter two are extremely brilliant tactically and not the kinds to take things lying down. They're not 'stooges' if I'm to put it bluntly.

They take pride in their performances and play down their achievements. Shastri was blowing his own trumpet about his tenure in which he boasted about his achievements. In his tenure, we lost in LOI to RSA at home which is a rare occurrence if you follow Indian cricket, we lost to Bangladesh in their den and all the hoopla about our performance in the tests in Australia were down to a modern day great batsman at the peak of his powers. We still did NOT win a test. We won a T20 series and Shastri made it sound like the second coming of Christ! We lost a T20 WC at home which no one ever spoke of!

It's been 6 months or so that MSD has basically stepped out from the leadership brigade and all hell is breaking loose.

We need a coach for the Indian Cricket Team for god's sake. Not a stooge to stroke Kohli's ego! Mind you, I'm a huge Kohli fan!

Mark my words, this will not end well and our limited overs cricket will suffer! Our template is anyways outdated.

Sourav Ganguly Had Reservations About Ravi Shastri's Appointment As Indian Cricket Team Head Coach: Sources

@SaiSrini seems that Sachin is in cahoots with BCCI? After all they bought him a career in cricket. Sachin betrays his fans and worshippers as normal!

He's not betrayed anyone. You need to understand that it's simply not his nature to create all this controversial frenzy around him. Over time, Ganguly himself has mellowed. The BCCI does what it feels like. It has no regard for cricket fans or past players.. It has to value the playing crop because the media and fan uproar would be huge if they mess with them.

Tendulkar can't afford to burn bridges with the BCCI.. He has a young son who is an aspiring cricketer and if anyone wants to judge him for that then they don't understand parenthood!

And I don't like the selection too. My ideal scenario would be Moody to be the head coach with bangar and Zak as bowling consultants/coach. When you are appointing guys like Dravid, you need to give them full power. Not just 'batting consultant for overseas tour'.

Dravid can't be given full power (i.e. full time batting coach) because he is head coach of the U-19 and India-A teams. Actually Dravid's experience will be best served in nurturing young prospects rather than be batting coach for the senior team, many of whom will be coming already with king sized egos. Younger kids will respect the likes of Dravid and Kumble better and listen better to them.

I like the arrangement of Dravid consulting for overseas and Zaheer as bowling coach. My only issue is with Shastri as head coach (Moody could have had it - he is good but maybe Moody asked for a foreign support entourage and the BCCI/CAC wanted a more Indian setup?). Anyways, with Kohli as captain, Indian cricket is set to go through a turbulent phase. Hope they come out unscathed. Again I say, a strong vice captain needs to be built. Right now no one can stake claim to being a strong vice captain as everyone else apart from Kohli is on shaky ground. That's why Kohli has that much power.

No one is saying to sell his soul for his kids. You telling me Sachin needs to be in good footing with BCCi and betray those that believe in him? All because he wants his son to hold a bat? Thats the example a parent should set playboy? Betrayal, dishonesty, greed and selfishness?!

There you go. The drama starts Day 1 itself. Seriously, if our legends in the CAC have any sort of respect, they should walk away from their posts. RIGHT NOW! And the BCCI has to tell Shastri - if you want to be head coach, you work with what you've been given. If not, quit!

Its extremely hurtful as a fan of the legends like Sachin, Saurav and Laxman that they pick someone who is a very good choice to do the respective job (they picked Kumble, who was the right choice and the results showed in our performances). Same way, they picked Zaheer and Rahul. The CAC has not taken a wrong step YET. Also they have also bended a bit to fulfill Kohli's desires and hire Shastri as the head coach. Now this drama of Shastri being adamant for Bharat Arun as bowling coach and having Zaheer as consultant is BS.

Does Zaheer have any coaching accumen? I think Shastri might just be on to something here! BCCI have the funs to dispose on a top quality management team.

I think the important bit that people is missing is that Zaheer Khan has been hired as "bowling consultant" not as bowling coach as it says on the BCCI twitter account. I am assuming that this means he will be in and out of the setup just like how Dravid will be. He won't be there all the time as he hasn't been appointed as the coach. Again, that is just my assumption and that might be the reason why Shastri wants Bharat Arun as the bowling coach.

And here comes the confirmation from BCCI.

Zaheer Khan’s appointment, like Rahul Dravid, is tour specific | cricket | Hindustan Times

The BCCI today made it clear that Zaheer Khan’s appointment as bowling consultant of the Indian cricket team is also tour specific, just like batting consultant Rahul Dravid.
