India Team Discussion

Yup, they need money anyhow. They don't have good degree to do a job in a MNC. I would have done it if i wasnt playing and making money. Money is everything.

I was okay with the board taking its time to find a coach as long as we got a GOOD one, but now its starting to get a bit ridiculous. Puts even more pressure on the new captain because he is pretty much going to be on his own.

And if Shastri is not committed, then he should be let go asap. The team director not travelling with the team, skipping the warm up games and joining them only 4 days before the first Test shows clear lack of commitment and responsibility

I am not saying that its an ideal situation, but honestly "only 4 days before ... " is a bit of a misleading thing to say. The team itself arrived 8 days before the first test and the Director will arrive 4 days later (assuming its true). Its not like the team has been in SL for months now and the Director will arrive just four days before the test. The Director can be cut some slack for not arriving with the team, as long as he is also getting there within a few days of the team landing. If that is the case then I think its not that big a deal in itself is it.

However BCCI does need to decide once and for all, just how they go ahead from here. Will it be a coach, or will it just be the Director. Is there a specific person they are holding out for to coach, exactly what is the delay here, I do not understand.

I dont know man. In the absence of a coach, the Director does seem to be the unofficial coach. And missing the warm-up which will be the key to deciding on the starting XI in the first test seems very un-director like to me.

It's quite logical. The BCCI needs to save as much money as they can, considering their serious cash crunch and Shastri is the best cricket brain in the world by far. Plus, he's doing the job for free, so you can't expect him to back out of previously signed media contracts.

Indian fans should really stop whining all the time, as they get much much better in return from the administrators than what they pay for on TV or at the grounds. It's been donkeys years we had one good sponsor.

That's like saying Ishant Sharma is the best bowler in the world.

"just hit it like a tracer bullet, Virat"

"we just have to score more runs than the other team, boys"

"what we need now is a wicket"

I dont see whats the big deal. Pathan is clearly past his due date as an international cricketer. How is this any worse or better than doing advertisements for money on the side ?

There is a massive difference in doing a commercial to safeguard your future and actually entering a competition like the one he has entered.

First of all, the reason why you think he is past it, is because of his indulgence in all this as well as because you don't see much news about him. I'll try and explain with the help of a few examples-

1) Steven Finn is a proper case study of destroying a good cricketer and his resurgence is a proper case study for any individual that struggles but has enough passion for the game to come back.
2) Ryan Harris was older than Pathan when he debuted and we all know what he put his body through to play for Australia.
3) Harbhajan Singh has a good 3-4 years on Pathan and he's back in the reckoning to play for India. He sang a song in between which took up a week but he always played the domestic matches and kept saying that he only wanted to wear the India shirt and pick wickets.
4) Yuvraj Singh, after having all the lavish money in the world, cheating death and going through immense pain is still trying and trying bloody hard to play for India. Zaheer Khan and him went to France to train for 3 months a couple of years back to get back in the side and they were older than Irfan.

I think, if you put your mind to it, A LOT can be achieved. The chap is 30 and if he really desired, he could play for India for 5-6 years. The difference between what he is doing and a commercial is TIME. Kohli gives a day to his photo shoots for one particular brand in like 6 months and he's the guy in maximum demand. What he has chosen to do needs rehearsal time everyday for two months. There's a LONG domestic season coming up and he could train in this time at the national academy and get his body ready. It then only needs domestic performances to get yourself back in the reckoning specially for someone like him as we never seem to have a seam bowling all rounder. The only way to get there is by preparing yourself. At least, give yourself a chance.

He's clearly a case of someone who's lost the 'desire' and not someone who's 'past his best.' This may sound strange, but every player has an ego, at every level and in any sport in the world. It's about realizing it. For instance, if you have seven or eight people dying to employ you with one trying to get one over the other just to secure you services, you know your worth. Two years later, no one gives a damn. It will hurt. I know of a lot of stories where such people have emerged after feeling that hurt. Apparently, Pathan has said 'You know what, I've done enough already to live life well.' I don't have an issue with that, it's his life. I was just a huge fan of his and I felt he would tear the world apart if someone took away the blue jersey from him.

It's about time that we realize that while a lot of people are jealous of our prestigious IPL, some are very correct about the big bucks spoiling young cricketers. Let's get over this myth that the IPL 'only' makes stars. It destroys some as well. I'm not blaming the tournament for it. These guys are adults and should make responsible decisions.

LOL, good analysis, but its rife with presumptions.

First of all, Pathan actually is past his due date. If you see domestic games, he has lost his swing and despite repeated attempts to work on it, he just doesn't seem to be getting it back. On top of that, he is unable to stay fit through a tournament and is plagued with injuries every time it seems like he is making a comeback. He has been failed by himself and his management.

Regardless, he has said that he is fit for the next Ranji season and is training to play for Baroda. So cricket isn't exactly on the back burner for him.

Second, the time invested by someone like Kohli/MSD in shooting ads would pretty much come out to be the same as as Irfan shooting for this show. It takes about 1-2 days to shoot a reality show episode - so lets say 3 days per week of investment including training and choreography for whatever. And he is a wild card, so he will be there max for 4-5 weeks ? Thats a maximum of 15 days. Is it really that bad to spend 2 weeks during cricket off season for this show ?

And finally, about greed and money. From what I understand, Pathan said that he will be putting all this money into the Pathan brother's cricket foundation. Now, I dont know what purposes this foundation serves but atleast on face value it doesn't seem like pure greed

What is even the debate on. There is no domestic cricket happening right now. Its off season, he can do what he likes in the period. How does it matter. Maybe the guy is just fond of dancing and finally got a stage he liked.

Its a pointless debate to be honest. Its off season how does it matter whether a cricket spends it holidaying or dancing around.

No one concerned about the India-Sri Lanka test? Especially when Ashwin picked up 6 wickets and Rohit failing once again.
