India Team Discussion

Fifties for Rahul and Pujara, others struggle | Cricket | ESPN Cricinfo

I dont get it. Apparently the squad for SL is supposed to be selected tomorrow. Why couldn't they had selected the squad after the two India A games were done ?

To be fair the squad picks itself -

Dhawan, Vijay, Rahul, Pujara, Rohit, Rahane, Kohli, Ojha, Ashwin, Harbhajan, Ishant, Varun, Bhuvi, Umesh. Thats 14. Probably one more spinner (Karn Shara, though I heard he was injured).

Also I have followed the SL-Pak series, and frankly SL have been very disappointing. They do have one seamer though, and he has potential to hurt India. He played just one of the three tests, was impressive, have no idea why he didn't play more tests. Most importantly Herath looked totally out of touch and ineffective for the most part.

Hmm, I guess it does. Although if they are planning to pick 3-4 spinners as reports suggest, then India A games would have been useful in picking between Ojha or Mishra.

Also, I think Saha is still the first choice Test WK and not Ojha. Right ?

And I still think Pujara is more valuable to us in Tests over Rohit, but we all know Rohit never falls out of favor :spy

Ojha Saha ... potato pota(a)to, both are the same to me. Neither really anything to get excited about. If Samson gets a look in, then yeah I will make it a point to write the correct name :)

Selection of Harbhajan and Mishra shows that the selectors are not impressed with the young spinners of India.I would have gone for Axar Paterl, just to try him out.Yes,he is best suited for limited over cricket but there is no harm trying him.But the selection of Mishra is a good one as well, although he did nothing special,he is perhaps the best leg spinner in the country now.Chahal would be only second choice for tests.

Harbhajan still has 3-4 yrs cricket left in him, if he stays fit. Karn Sharm still should be the second choice for the leggie slot.

I think Harbhajan and Ashwin to be the two spinners. Kohli likes to go in with 5 specialist bowlers, and depending on the composition we could play all three spinners in the same game.
Bhuvi and Varun to be the two seamers.

Varun was impressive in B'desh and Bhuvi looks imporved enough after the Zimbabwe tour to lead the attack again.

There will be three fasters and two spinners. We will have the same bowling attack that played against Bangladesh. It will be Ishant Sharma leading the attack with Varun Aaron and Umesh Yadav as the other two fast bowlers. Ashwin will be the leading spinner and Harbhajan will be the second spinner. I don't see any changes happening in this bowling attack unless Umesh bowls horribly in these A series.

Trust me I saw the series Pak vs SL, and 3 spinners would be the better option. Having said that if its three seamers I would like the three to be Umesh, Varun and Bhuvi, or frankly anyone except Ishant.

Well whether we want him or not, Ishant will always be in the team based on his "experience". Anyways, I am hearing that Virat Kohli has asked to play in the second test of this ongoing series of India A vs Australia A for match practice before heading to Sri Lanka.

Life of spinners is a bit higher than that of pacers, because they have the less straining job among the XI players. Especially players like Harbhajan Singh can play until they are 37-38. So, if selectors are willing to use him for coming two years, then its the right time to rope him back into the team as a full time player until his retirement.
