India tour of England 2018

I will blame mostly the captain for the failure of our batters. No one knows whether he will be playing the next match or not. Instead of providing cushion to the players, insecure feeling is instilled in their minds. Earlier all the intent talk was ridiculous. Rahane is just not there mentally at all and the above is a part of the reason for it, I feel. The three openers playing the game all know they can be dropped from the XI anytime Kohli wants and feels like it. Pujara is already dropped and even if he returns for the 2nd game, he will be under tremendous pressure because the captain has zero faith in his abilities. Rahane was also dropped earlier in some series which took him down. The constant chopping and changing won't work in Test matches. While Kohli the batsman is out of the world, Kohli the captain is the worst of all!

It's not going to work in any cricket. India are deceiving with results everywhere because of the sheer quality and depth they have!

The reasons why Kumble left are pretty obvious now. I absolutely loved Shastri sleeping caught on camera! Consummate pro!

Do you seriously think that’s all it takes to swing series in India’s favour, just one person to stick with kohli each innings. That’s assuming kohli scores big each time. You need 3 if not 4 of top order to score consistently well imo
Well, I didn't say India will definitely win the series. But seeing the current situation and the last match. If someone had scored alongside Kohli India would've won. That doesn't necessarily mean Kohli will score in every innings, but he will be consistent. So someone alongside him does the same. India will have the favor.

Root is at a crucial point in his career. He is being left behind by other elite batsmen and unless he gets rid of his careless attitude, he won't catch up with them. He has always scored 50s on a regular basis, but his inability to convert and more importantly the manner of his dismissals are extremely irritating. You simply don't expect that from an elite batsman. If England had lost the game, I would've blamed him as much as Malan. His lax dismissal in the first innings allowed India to get back into the game. The issue is perhaps the fact he doesn't face enough pressure to stimulate him to press on to the next level like his peers do. He needs a kick back up the arse soon or he risks ending up as yet another good-but-not-legendary batsman.

Yeah but that’s like saying , if someone had stuck with Curran second innings the lead would have been too great or if one of those catches off kohli was taken first innings England would have won for sure etc

Consistency is the key for sure, obvious want England but would prefer exciting close series than say a 4-0 win which would get boring for general observers at least

I don't know how much Indian cricket you follow, but there were some bizarre decisions in SA which were masked by Kohli's brilliance with the bat. The same stuff has happened in the first test here.

I watch some Indian cricket but mainly get my news from the fans here at PC so yes I am sort of up to speed with that SA series. team selection thorny issue for all sides it seems......

I would 4-0 scoreline if we get matches like the one just concluded even if it means India being on the losing side.

I don't mind losing - just the manner in which we lose gets to me.

Hey I agree with you 100% :p

You are right you could have a 3:2 series but every match one sided. You want teams batting first scoring 300-350 , this usually means good test match. To score 400 plus should mean out of this world batting (assuming not playing minor test side etc )

Yeah, but all sides don't drop their best bowler made for the conditions. It's like dropping Anderson for a test match in England! And that too after he's your best bowler the previous test with a five fer!

I honestly can't tell if you're pulling my leg :spy

Good Luck Ollie Pope (684 runs in on going season) and woakes.

I purposely restrained myself from posting yesterday to avoid posting on immediate emotion of an absolutely draining test match, one of the modern classics for sure. It has become a repeat feature of India's overseas tours to let go of winning positions. I list a few in recent memory since 2014.
i) GABBA, 2014: India score 400 (should've got to 500) and have Australia at 230/7. Let Johnson and Starc get runs and lost the game by 4 wickets.
ii) Nottingham 2014: England are 220/9 and almost 200 adrift India's first innings score. Root and Anderson get a 200 run partnership and draw the game.
iii) Galle 2015: India mess up a 180 run chase and lose the first test. They do win the series though.
iv) Auckland 2014: Chasing 380 odd, India are almost cruising at 220/2 but end up losing by 40 runs.
v) Adelaide 2014: Kohli twin hundreds in vain as India let go of an exceptional opportunity to chase 363 on the final day after having been just 120 away with 8 wickets in hand going into tea.
iv) Cape Town and Centurion (2018): Chasing modest targets of 200 and 283, we mess up the chases yet again.

That followed by this chase means that chasing in overseas tests is our Achilles heels. Yet, the optimistic side of me does point out that we get ourselves into winning positions more often than other international sides do away from home. In that regards, we are well in with a chance in this series and won't give it away like in 2011 or 2014. That is one side of Kohli's leadership one must appreciate. The team will get back and fight. However, it is the tactical side of his leadership which is a real worry, especially with a coach like Shastri who is just there for the pot. As someone pointed out, this side does not lack batsmen who can score well overseas. In fact, we have more than a few who have decent away records. Yet, the repeated emphasis on 'No position is fixed. Noone can take their place for granted.' by Shastri and Kohli has really made people insecure for places and this shows in their game.

Lets look at Rahane and Pujara's cases to start with. Right until the end of the home series against NZ (played on some spicy tracks), Rahane was our best test batsman, and the most consistent one at that. He had scored runs against all attacks and all conditions till then. The team management kept shuffling him around at the same time in ODIs and kept playing him at random positions and he lost rhythm in the process. That coincided with an injury during the England series where he sat out and Nair scored that 300. There were unncesessary talks of his place being under threat (for absolutely no reason) after he returned from injury. He scored crucial runs against Australia at Dharamsala and Bangalore and looked like getting back into form. However, leading into the SA tour, the useless duo of Shastri and Kohli played a proven overseas failure in Sharma ahead of Rahane further denting his confidence. Kohli's remarks ahead of the Centurion test further adds to the chaos. We now have a situation where Rahane looks clueless. A batsman who arguably has the best attacking game against pace/seam bowling is not getting out to half-hearted strokes and doesn't seem to be commiting to his strokes. All you need in this case to assure him of a full series and not make statements about noone being indispensable during press conferences.

Pujara too, to a lesser extent has been through the same kind of issues where the captain and coach have come down on his batting tempo, strike rates etc in press conferences leaving the player confused. The same could be seen in Vijay's case as well where a player so sure of his off-stump now is fishing outside the off stump. Rahul started this tour off on such a high. The team management follows it up by dropping him in ODIs for Suresh Raina! Such short-sightedness. He could've gone into this test series full of confidence had he been assured of his place before the first test. Dropping Pujara and retaining Dhawan (scored a pair in the game against Essex) sends confusing signals not just ti Pujara but the other openers as well.

This team has the talent pool and thus will do reasonably well in the tests to even save the team management's face. Yet, we run the risk of losing seriously good batsmen in Rahane, Pujara and Rahul because of how they are being handled. Even under Ganguly, the legends had bad tours overseas. However, they could come back into form during the series because of how sure they were about their positions. Here, we have genuinely good batsmen under the pump but someone like Dhawan and Pandya keep getting the backing. Pandya has played all tests since his debut without being dropped. What has he done performance-wise to deserve that. This team management lacks a mature head who respects cricketing logic and commonsense. One cannot help but rue someone like Dravid not being around to help out quiet, introvert guys like Rahane and Pujara with their techniques and general temperament. It is so evident even from so very far that these guys look insecure about what mad decision this team management would make in the next game. Bhuvi got dropped after a 5-er at Cape Town, for heaven's sake!

I admire the way Kohli led from the front and took the came to the opposition. However, the fact is that had Malan taken his catch in the first innings, we would be criticising his batting today. Surety of his place in the side after that horrific 2014 tour and even that bad home series against Australia has resulted in Kohli coming back stronger. Imagine if some of the others in the side had the same surety of their places. This side has it in them to win the series, especially given how England struggled with the bat. Someone needs to show maturity and tell the key batsmen that they will get 3 more games come what may and can be free to express themselves. Someone like Rahul or Rahane can match Kohli in strokeplay and could be great counter-attacking options. Give them this series and stop backing FTBs like Rohit, Dhawan and Pandya time and again. Despite Pandya's second innings, he doesn't offer much to the side. Why not play Nair or even Jadeja in his place as a specialist option! This is test cricket, not T20.

Also, the lack of game sense is so apparent. Ishant is the best defensive tailender we have in this side. Yet, in both innings, when we needed someone to stay with the established batsman at the other end, we sent out Shami! I could see this from a thousand miles away. What does Shastri even bring to the table? No tactical acumen. I doubt if he has anything to offer on the technical front either. Sad.

True that. Give Pujara and Rahane the freedom to express themselves and not play for their place in the next game. And same with the openers. India have to make it a rule that only two of the specialist openers can play at a time. And Vijay needs to be let known that he is the first choice opener with Dhawan fighting only for Rahul's spot. And Rahul needs to be the first choice between him and Dhawan. If you see this from a 'conspiracy theory perspective', it looks like Kohli has ensured that only his own spot is secure and no one else's spot is (P.s: I am not saying Kohli is intentionally implementing this theory).

I would also bring back Jadeja for Pandya. Ashwin showed last game that England are suspectible to spin even in conditions favoring seamers. I would bring in Jadeja instead of Kuldeep as Jadeja can bat as well as Pandya and gives the side a specialist 5th bowling option. I will also continue with Umesh Yadav even if Bumrah is fit, because Yadav despite his 'run leaks' in the first test also got wickets at crucial moments. And Yadav needs to be given the same backing that I am proposing that our batsmen get. My XI for Lord's would be this:

Vijay
Rahul
Pujara
Kohli
Rahane
Karthik
Ashwin
Jadeja
Ishant
Shami
Yadav

And for slip catching, if we use the right people, we can most likely improve it. We should use Rahane almost everytime a slip is needed (if only one slip is needed, it should be Rahane; if more than one slip is needed, one of them should be Rahane). And the likes of Kohli, Dhawan and Rahul should stay away from slips. I think test specialists like Vijay and Ashwin should man the slips. Successful slip catching has mostly been about personality in Indian cricket. If you noticed, Dravid, Laxman and Tendulkar were safer slip catchers than Ganguly or Sehwag. And the personality of these players show through. Kohli, Rahul, Jadeja are more closer in personality to Ganguly, Sehwag. India should earmark Rahane, Vijay and Ashwin as the slip catchers. If we need a fourth slip, it should be Pujara. Rahul should be earmarked for doing short leg most often.

One more thing I forgot to add. Kohli did not bowl Umesh for most of the England 2nd innings even when Curran got set. In fact, it was only after Umesh came in to bowl that Curran looked uncomfortable. He could'nt put bat to ball for 2 overs. If not for Umesh's spell, the target could've been much bigger as well. Yet, I expect him to be dropped for Bumrah by the bright minds in the team management.

Also, we should bat first even if the conditions are helpful for bowling. Most of our overseas wins have been in helpful conditions with us batting first. Jo'burg 2006, Durban 2010, Perth 2008, Headingley 2002, Lords 2014, Jamaica 2006 and more recently Jo'burg 2018 have all had a common theme. Extremely challenging batting conditions where our batsmen fought hard and then our bowling outbowled their much vaunted opposition. Sometimes I doubt how much cricket Kohli and Shastri have seen. Or is it a case of them going against conventional logic because they want to show people that they don't give a damn.
