Had more to do with the fact that IPL franchises seem to bid heavily on players that have played really well against India in recent series (ex. Kyle Jamieson in the IPL 2021 auction following a dominant home series against India)

- He failed to outperform other openers
- Ruturaj got an Orange Cap and had a decent season this year (scored more than Shaw in both seasons)
- Ishan Kishan can keep wickets + he is a left hander + he can play in the middle order
- KL Rahul & Rohit Sharma have taken up their spots already
- India took a while to move on from Shikhar Dhawan
- Shaw have struggled to play on wickets with pace, bounce and lateral movement
