He may not bat again at this rate
I do find it odd how Aiden Markram has all the textbook qualities of a really excellent Test batter, but he's only got one ton and an average of 27.34 in his last 20 Tests so it's evidently not working out. More than that, no fifties and an average of 12.60 in his last eight

Had a really good start to his career. Four centuries in ten matches. Had one since then.

My guess would be a mix of his T20 career taking off - averaged 43.8 before his T20i debut and 23.25 since then - and maybe just being found out.

Markram was initially clueless against decent spin and had to work through that. Somewhere along the technique change for that he started having struggles against the new ball. In the middle of this was the classic T20 adaptation that has halted the test career of many a batsman. Ally this with concentration issues that have plagued him since the start of his international career and it’s easy to see why he hasn’t really kicked on.

I did remark once that the key thing for him to stay in the side across formats would be developing a secondary skill and credit to him, he’s done that brilliantly. He’s also really turned himself into a T20 star which was something nobody could have foreseen at the start of his career.

I presume he will be dropped for Bavuma once the latter is fit.

While we're on the topic of Test batting, any batter who regularly plays this shot in a Test match shouldn't be playing in a Test match.

This ball is comfortably outside the line of his head, feet, stumps, everything. When the ball is on that line, you do one of two things - you either attack it or you leave it well alone. Given the length, it's definitely more of a leave than an attacking opportunity but either would be a better option than this. The best possible outcome that could occur here is a dot ball (or, technically an edge for four).

At least if he got out attacking here he'd've been trying to achieve something.

Disclaimer: When I bat, I play this shot very often. This is because I am bad at batting.

That shot reminds me of Rohit Sharma in Test Cricket few years ago.

Saw him play it twice in two balls, that was before he got out.
