I am going to give my two cents here-
1) MSD was wrong. But, I like that emotion. I'm not going to judge him for it.
2) The umpiring standards in the "most premiere league" has been tosh. Honestly, some of the reactions from the players is almost justified. The umpires have been that bad.
3) I think the cricketing fraternity needs to do something. If we are going to have umpires on field, then they need to be respected and have power given back to them. We started this T20 format for it to be short and sweet but the length of the games is getting tiresome. You have breaks for everything. Nowadays, if a batsman dives, he can change gloves immediately. Bats are changed mid overs and in one international game I saw a proper drinks break in the middle of an over and that was the last over of the game. There needs to be one time out at the 10 over mark which should have drinks in it. That's ALL. I've played cricket in Kolkata and I've played noon games in the month of May and been allowed one drinks break in a 30 over game. These are professionals ffs.
The only reason people are trashing these umpires is because they're powerless. 90% decisions aren't made by them and they get slaughtered for the 5% they make in crunch situations. I think the 'review' should be one review per side for the whole game. It will mean that teams will only go for it for the howler. This 'umpire's call' and 'soft signal' also need to be thrown out. OUT is OUT and NOT OUT is NOT OUT. In tennis, if a ball kisses the edge of the line, it's IN not umpire's call. If you want to be respectful to the 'umpire's call' then don't have a review system. If these two things are thrown out, then I think we should have 2 reviews per game. I don't get this logic of per innings 1 review because then you are basically allowing 'tactical' reviews.
There needs to be a rule per se that if a ball doesn't touch the rope or doesn't go over it, it's not a boundary. Fielder touching while ball in hand and all this nonsense should stop. It just helps speed up the game so much.
The no ball should just be something the third umpire does.
Lastly, abolish this paid holiday for match referees. Put the authority back in the hand of the umpires. Give them a yellow and red card. For what Dhoni did as an example, just give him a red. Missed game.
And while they're at it, it would be nice to see the Ravimankad rule sorted as well.
