Indian Premier League - General Discussion

Bayliss signs up as Sunrisers Hyderabad coach and replaces outgoing Tom Moody (Source: Cricinfo)

Hope Moody puts his hat into the ring again for India coaching. And hope this time (if he does put his hat down), he gets picked. I just cannot see any other coach in India that can coach a team where Kohli is the captain (which is likely to continue despite a few people opposing to that idea). Moody has coached SRH to victory when David Warner was the captain and Warner is a pretty similar character to that of Kohli. Even if Rohit gets captaincy, Moody could be good combo with Rohit. I am pretty confident that Stephen Fleming won't throw his hat into the ring, because I have a feeling he won't get along well with Kohli and with MS Dhoni on his way out of the India team, it might not be a good thing to get Fleming in.

The coach is not the problem, the problem is the captain.

I was rooting for Moody when Kumble got selected if you remember and while my respect for Kumble is enormous, I had said at the time as well that the other candidates would never be in with a shout because the guys selecting the coach had such a special bond with Kumble.

This time, without learning anything from the previous episode, Kapil Dev is going to decide who coaches along with a few more blokes and I think this makes Shastri almost immovable. They have played in their time and have a bond and Shastri has done okay in the last three years by carrying Kohli's kit and drinking away at night.

If, Indian cricket wants to dominate world cricket and we have the team and depth to do so, then Pujara needs to be made long term test captain and Rohit Sharma the limited overs captain till the 2023 World Cup. I would also render strong thoughts of having a deputy to Rohit Sharma in both formats with prior information to Rohit that the vice captain would be appointed T20 skipper after the 2020 World Cup. This is the way forward. The problem with our country is, we are a desperate lot that lusts numbers. Virat Kohli has been a terrible captain considering the resources that are available to him. Everything goes back to 'oh we won in Australia' bla bla bla. Yes, you won when Australia didn't have their two best players and while we bunted their bowling attack, the bunting was done by a bloke who was dropped in England.

Gloating that 'look we made the semis and only 45 mins of poor cricket put us out' is a very content and non hungry way of looking at things. This entire forum would have bet their house that India would make the semis and frankly, in my opinion a bad result with our side was losing in the semis, finals and losing to England would have been expected and winning the World Cup in a final against England would have been the only result where we could have said 'this side played better than expectation.'

I would honestly really try to get Zaheer Khan as head coach. He knows these guys, they respect him a lot and his brain is pure genius. The best part about him is his positivity. Rohit Sharma and him work together for MI anyway.

But, Kohli will stay on as will Shastri. At this point, even that baboon MSK Prasad might stay on. The confusion in selection and the statements made have been very different to the ongoings and are very similar to the sham of Royal Challengers Bangalore for ten years. It's now or never.

Kings XI part ways with Ashwin and Delhi Capitals are buying out Ashwin

This is a very weird decision from Delhi's standpoint. They already have so many spinners in Axar, Mishra, Tewatia, Saxena, Markande, Suchith and Lamichhane. Now they are adding Ashwin to this mix. Kinda wished Chennai showed interest in Ashwin and did something to work a deal out. With MS Dhoni not likely to last long, Ashwin could've been a decent captaincy candidate for CSK for a few years until we found someone more long lasting (I don't rate Raina in anyway as a captain).

As for KXIP - no matter who you appoint as captain, unless you have a decent management among the owners, your franchise is not going to perform any better.

I think Delhi are looking to leave out a spinner that is why they have gone with Ashwin. Most probably they'll leave out Tewatia and Jalaj Saxena who I feel can't contribute for them because of the balance they have in their team.

Delhi look like they are finally building a side that suits their home ground with additional options to help on away pitches too. Wouldn't surprise me if they axe Tewatia who has flattered to deceive in the last two seasons and Saxena like you've mentioned. I could even see them dropping Axar if they want the 5 crores spent elsewhere to pick a really good middle order player.

Dhawan

This is a very good team that I can see making the playoffs again. The Indian top four is perhaps the best in the tournament in terms of batting ability and they have a variety of bowling options for all phases of the game. The bench is also quite strong, with backups like Munro, Paul, Bains, Kalra, Vihari and Avesh Khan. The question is if they can find a good middle order batsman or all-rounder. Somebody like Roscoe in his newfound freedom and form at number five who can offer both stability in cases of a collapse or some power hitting would be ideal.

Ashwin would have been the ideal replacement for Harbhajan too, as the powerplay offie. It seems like the feud between him and Dhoni is bigger than it appears to be as there were zero rumours regarding any return to CSK.

I don't rate current Raina as a batsman either, he earns far too much for what he contributes and is also playing as the number three. For comparison's sake, I rate him slightly better than Uthappa, who himself is overpaid. Raina earns almost twice that of what Uthappa does!

I believe that it is time for CSK to invest in a young, skilled Indian batsman like they did with Raina all those years ago. My choice would be to aggressively pursue Gill, either by promising him a starring role in the current lineup with a big wage or in the next mega auction (unlikely as I expect KKR to build their side around him). It is also time for Gaikwad to finally get a game, his India A exploits have made excellent and he is extremely likely to leave next season if we don't offer him opportunities. Selling the likes of Karn, Mohit and Jadhav should also free up the wage bill in order to retain talents like Chahar, Ngidi and Gaikwad himself.

True this post +1000!

Raina is past his expiry date and its ridiculous that there are talks within the CSK group about grooming Raina as the next captain. IPL 2020 has to be about MS Dhoni grooming a new successor as captain for the franchise and it should not be Raina.

Rituraj Gaikwad has to play this season! CSK cant keep carrying tired legs of Watson. With Rayudu continuing to play, cant have another tired leg of Watson. Faf is fit, but Watson is not as fit. Also time to give N Jagadeesan a chance behind the stumps while Dhoni fields. Jagadeesan is a pretty good bat and a wicketkeeper and should be the next in line behind Dhoni to be wicketkeeper.

And CSK need to find a new batsman from outside who can be the captaincy successor. Just like how Delhi have invested in Shreyas Iyer, who is already starting to pay dividends.

Some good appointments being made lately and surprisingly it has been made by two of the teams which are highly inconsistent and has never won the IPL before.

Firstly RCB hiring Mike Hesson and Simon Katich. This is exciting because it feels like RCB is finally getting their shit together with someone like Mike Hesson handling all the decision making at the top. However, they have to be given enough time to build the team. They can't be judged based on 1 year because they won't be able to do anything in 1 year. They have the example of Tom Moody and Sunrisers and how Tom entirely changed the Sunrisers and got them a title. Also I am really hoping Hesson does well here and can come in as the next coach of India.

Another one is the announcement made today about Kings 11 bringing in Kumble as the head coach. They have also hired Coutrney Walsh as the talent scout, Sunil Joshi as assistant coach, Jonty Rhodes as fielding coach and George Bailey as batting coach. George Bailey decision does come as a surprise since he is still playing in Australia but he can be an ideal guy to have around a team.

P.S. Delhi Capitals can say goodbye to that Ashwin trade because I don't think Kumble is going to send him anywhere. I also think that trade was lose-lose for both teams since I think Ashwin did reasonably well in the first season as a captain for Kings 11. Also Delhi has so many spinners and I don't think they need to add anymore spinners to their squad.

Right on cue.

Great to see Kumble appointed coach of Kings XI Punjab. Now it makes all the more sense for Ashwin to stay put with Punjab. Ashwin-Kumble can be a very interesting combination and I dont think its a bad choice to continue with Ashwin as captain. Ashwin would be "one too many" for the Delhi lineup, as Aalay said above.

I can't understand how on Earth can Rajasthan leave a player like Rahane ? It's been too harsh on him that he keeps getting overlooked in the limited overs format despite being more than decent and clearly a player that would give you that depedency in all 3 forms of the game. And Rahane has done very well for Rajasthan and is the top scorer for them ever since he joined. Poor decision to leave him out.

Another thing that bothered me is Kings XI Punjab have decided to swap Ashwin for Suchith. Seriously ? You are actually dropping the best spinner in the country for a bowler who hasn't been consistent and isn't really a wicket taking option.

I'm not getting it why Delhi wants more and more spinners in their squad and why they released Trent Boult?
They have given a great contribution in making the pace attack of Mumbai more dangerous with Boult, Bumrah, Malinga..

On the contrary, I think it makes perfect sense. Ponting has finally realised that the Kotla pitch is of no use to pacers and spin is the way to go, a la CSK. Ashwin, Axar and Sandeep in the playing XI should be the way to go for most home games, with Mishra as the reliable back-up or fourth spinner when the pitch is even worse. They have a powerplay spinner now in Ashwin who could free up Rabada to bowl two in the death and one in the middle if needed.

The Rahane deal has been criticised by many as being bad for both sides which is quite bizarre. It is obvious that Rahane was a misfit in the Rajasthan side due to the presence of two more aggressive openers in the lineup, in addition to Samson and Smith blocking his path in the top order. The captaincy change also showed how Smith was clearly meant to be the key and not Rahane. Markande gives them the second domestic spinner option. Tewatia IMO is better than what he has produced so far and has been unlucky, will be interesting to see if he receives opportunities. As for Delhi, Rahane gives them the extra option of an international batsman who would be far more willing to sit on the bench if Shaw and Dhawan are the players ahead of him. For all the potential and hype, Shaw was a disappointment in IPL 2019 barring that one century. A bit of domestic competition might be what is needed to produce some consistency from him. They do need at least one or two middle-order Indian batsmen, pretty much everyone in that squad would prefer being a top order batsman.[DOUBLEPOST=1573819751][/DOUBLEPOST]
I don't think Malinga will be playing this year.

Given that Malinga is highly likely to play in the World Cup next year, I would be very surprised if MI don't play him. He's shown that he's still got the ability to make a difference on Asian pitches.

I doubt wheter Sri Lankan board will allow him to be the part of IPL 2020

Rahane have been the part of RR dugout right from 2011 IPL and he has always been a match winner for them. He was looking a lot more comfortable when he left his Captaincy in the later stages of 2019 IPL. He deserved atleast one more season considering he had the experience and is part of the RR setup for so many years.

CSK get Sam Curran, Josh Hazlewood and R Sai Kishore! But their biggest and weirdest buy was PIYUSH CHAWLA for 6.75 crores. CSK now have 7 spinners in their squad, with 3 leggies, 3 left arm spinners and 1 offie! If only they had released Karn Sharma, they could've acquired a good batsman. They didnt go for a batsman at all today. Maybe they're looking at Jagadeesan and Ruturaj to play this season.
