Indian Premier League - General Discussion

People on social media rejoicing at seeing CSK at the rock bottom of the points table. Clearly those morons have started following IPL only very recently. CSK used to be a team that frequently started bad, then made a spirited dash towards playoffs and by a few quarters of an inch, they'll storm into the playoffs. Its only in the last few years that they haven't experienced that pressure. The pre-suspension CSK is known for late dashes, just like Mumbai Indians are also known for it.

I expect both MI and CSK to fight harder as the tournament goes on. We're still 3 games in (some sides are yet to play their 3rd game). And this is a 14 league game tournament. 8 wins are needed for playoff qualification and CSK need 7 wins from 11 games. Still some leeway available for them though they would want to start winning from this Friday itself.

I honestly hand on heart believe that I know all about cricket and more than anyone than my 1.3 billion countrymen. BUT, I honestly hand on heart believe one bloke knows more than me. He wears the yellow 7. We are all just rats to that pied piper of Chennai. When push comes to shove, these rats will be the first to fall off the cliff.

The way he Tonked Norte for that six reminds me of the Younger Yusuf Pathan.

Obviously Sample size way too less to tell what Abdul Samad is all about hopefully we will get to see him more of this IPL.

His offside game is really poor. But, he can hit sixes the size of a Dhoni on the on side. He will either develop into an India number 6 or wilt away like a lot of IPL proteges. One thing I assure you, he will not die wondering. He is absolutely fearless and his attitude will leave you charmed.

Cricinfo seem to do better virtual shows so I have to tolerate him. Still, the quality is pathetic. Pietersen and the two cockroaches by the name Gavaskar. Unbearable. At least there's Mark Nicholas.
Watch Dugout. It's great with commentators like Scott Styris, Brett Lee, Greame Swann, Brian Lara etc. No Bullshit, just cricket.

Haha, seriously ? Had to read this a few times to make sure it said what it said

Figure of speech. Every Indian believes they know everything there is to know in cricket. It's just passion.

Obviously, if I were to be serious then you never stop learning. The main joy of this forum has been that. I always feel I go back having learnt something from this lot. It also enhances your patience.

Narine as an opening batsman is an outdated tactic that I thought they moved on from last season after signing Tripathi and Banton. He is in serious danger of being dropped if Kuldeep manages to get back into form.

Banton sat on the bench is a big shame.
Who do you bring him for tho? Narine and Russell are indispensable. Pat Cummins will play every match considering the hefty sum paid for him. Morgan is needed in the middle order.

I'm not saying he should necessarily be in the side ahead of any of them, at this point, but it's a shame to see him sat on the bench. I think KKR could lose a bowler though. Narine opening and then Pat Cummins at seven is a putting a lot of faith in their batsmen.

Banton and Gill would be an exciting opening pair.

i guess its not the same for pant due to kl rahul!

also,
body structure of people like rohit pant etc are heavy built
so they put of weight quiet easily

whereas likes of jadeja dhawan kishan samson etc are lanky built so they can sustain
Kohli also had that chubby heavy build, but he worked on it... If you are in top and there is lot of competition, you need to work hard, there is no excuse...

I disagree with Narine being indispensable in this lineup. And why is that? Because he does not fit the team's best interests at the moment.

  • With a pinch hitter, you would want a batsman who is comfortable coming out to bat in the powerplay if he fails which will be very often. KKR had that batsman in Uthappa once. Did not always work due to the latter's decline but he would ensure that the fallout from Narine's early dismissal was minimal. I don't see Rana as the type of batsman who is comfortable walking out in say, the very first or second over (which I would still call a success for Narine given he wouldn't have taken many balls). He likes scoring runs off the spinners. In addition, none of their other non-opening batsmen are typical top order players either with the exception of maybe Rana who is still best at four which means they will all look to be hitters first and foremost.
  • You could look at the scoreboard today and say, "hey, that was not the worst performance from Narine" and I would disagree. Two of his three boundaries came off Unadkat bowling absolute dross and one was from a misfield. Other deliveries that he had a decent chance at were terribly timed and he looks genuinely outclassed by decent pace bowling. And teams seem to realise that dismissing him too early is not the best option either, I'm seeing bowlers try to rough him up first before having a go at his wicket. Every ball in the powerplay in these bigger grounds is like gold dust for a batting side and to see Narine waste plenty in the hope that he can catch up is not a good idea at all. He is not Chris Gayle.
  • KKR always played an extra 'batsman' whenever Narine opened. Seeing one of Gill, Rinku, Naik or even Dre Russ down at seven was the standard tactic. Right now, they have Pat Cummins at the same position. Him taking on Bumrah was the exception and not the norm, I don't believe Cummins is currently good enough to bat at seven in white ball cricket and I don't trust Nagarkoti and Mavi to offer the batting depth to compensate for this.
  • Finally, he has not been anything special with the ball. Narine after his action change is simply not the same bowler. He had the same economy as Chahal last season with a vastly inferior wicket record for one. The option he offers as a spinner who could potentially bowl in any phase of the game including the powerplay is very good on paper but he simply has not been good enough with the ball to merit an inclusion as an overseas spinner. His record has also been steadily going down suggesting that the mystery in him is long gone.
  • And now why is he in the team then? His versatility for one and his reputation certainly help. But there is another reason. There was a spinner who was worse than him last season and was also a regular. And he unfortunately plays for the same side. With Kuldeep looking toothless with the ball and also expensive, Kolkata simply have to play Narine for the spin option for now with Varun being unproven too.

So what could they do? There are two openers in Banton and Tripathi on the bench, both of whom love hitting in the powerplay. If Kuldeep's horror show persists, bring Tripathi in and move Narine to the lower order. Does not fix the number seven issue entirely but the batting depth has been strengthened. If Kuldeep gets back into form and Varun proves to be handy, there is no real reason to have Narine in the lineup at the expensive of an explosive Banton. If Russell is fit to bowl consistently, they could continue taking a risk with Narine in the lineup at the same spot and replace one of the domestic bowlers with Rinku Singh.[DOUBLEPOST=1601482031][/DOUBLEPOST]
He probably came to the wrong team I suppose. Same for Lynn and Rahane.

Now that I think of it, a Lynn-Watto swap could benefit CSK immensely and help MI too. :p

i think the key is to be relevent![DOUBLEPOST=1601483653][/DOUBLEPOST]

I doubt Lynn who is sitting on the bench right now sees it that way. :p
