Indian Premier League - General Discussion

Has Nortje dropped the match?

They've still got two overs of Rabada left. Pretty tough to get those runs after that over.

People would say Tushar Deshpande went for runs but the truth was he was the best bowler of the lot today in terms of pace and those accurate yorkers. He really set the stage on fire tonight.

RR were shit, are shit, will remain shit.

Dhoni's quote about plugging holes and finding new ones can be applied to this RR side, with the exception that the holes in the latter's case is caused by their own silly decisions.

As I mentioned, that over from Ashwin where Tewatia played it safe killed the chase completely. Plenty of small decisions swung the game in Delhi's favour, Buttler and Smith trying to needlessly play aggressively when not required and Uthappa's rather odd innings. Deshpande's here to stay and thankfully one of the A team pacers finally gets to show their mettle. :D

Hope for Delhi's sake that Shreyas is only out with a minor injury that will make him miss the weekend fixture at worst... :spy in all seriousness I hope he recovers soon, Delhi cannot afford another injury. Loving the clinical nature of this side that capitalizes on the opposition's smallest mistakes and is ruthless in general, reminds me of the powerhouse Mumbai and Chennai sides of the past years. Retain this nucleus with Ponting as the coach under the current ownership and I can see Delhi being one of the top IPL sides in the 2020s.

They know the middle order is weak. Buttler and Stokes should both be batting there and instead both are opening.

Uthappa
Smith
Samson
Stokes
Buttler
Parag
Tewatia
Archer
Gopal
Tyagi
Unadkat

Jos is nowhere near as good in the middle order though, his playstyle is very similar to the older KL Rahul and is focused on maximizing the powerplay. While at first glance one might think "hang on, he does fine for England in ODIs there though", most of the times he comes in with around twenty overs left and plays similar to how he does in T20s without those extra powerplay boundaries. I just believe he has been a bit unlucky and a bit reckless, nothing that can't be fixed by his own introspection and once he starts firing he can take this team to the playoffs on his own. In T20s I believe you just need to have your best batsmen in their best positions/roles unless you can get a big net positive by asking them to compromise and I don't see one in asking Buttler, a top five T20 batsman facing less than the ideal number of deliveries per game. As for Stokes, I think the number four/three spot suits him best but that does mean you would have to play one of Smith or Samson at five. Not sure if either would want to be there.

Another alternative would be to drop Uthappa and play Lomror, the latter is a classical batsman who struggles to play aggressively at times but given the slower nature of these pitches henceforth he could be a valuable asset. I don't rate Uthappa at all, his performance today was very streaky and it is no coincidence that the game went from easily winnable to doubtful and finally almost lost as he was playing. Vohra is another alternative if Stokes is to move back to the middle order but I doubt that will happen.

Some of the running and communication was shocking. Losing Parag after his performance in the last match was unfortunate.

Uthappa's innings gave the impression of someone who thought 'I'll win this from here' and then realised he's not the player he was 5-10 years ago.

The should go back to the top 3 that won them games the first two matches or give Jaiswal another shot with Buttler and get Stokes at 4 or 5. I like the idea of Stokes and Buttler opening, they got them off to a flyer but they can't hope Tewatia's going to pull of a miracle every match when the middle order fails to take advantage of a good start.

The Ashwin, Rabada, Nortje overs at the end were pure gold.

Kind of think Tewatia felt overconfident and played 4 dots in the Ashwin over with an aim to compensate at the end. In any case, can give the guy some rope. He has won two matches for RR so far and that's quite an accomplishment for someone who is/was unknown at the start of the tournament.

Nortje vs Butler was a delight to watch.

'Universe Boss' is back (and cocky as ever). Hoping he gets out for a nought today or even better, sticks around for the powerplay and scores at a SR of 50 and then gets out
