Indian Premier League - General Discussion

From the start of this IPL, I'm saying - Curran need to open the batting for CSK. He is a balanced hitter & can use powerplay. It gives CSK a proper balance. Now, CSK is looking dangerous. Don't know, why CSK management took this decesion after 5 losses. But, its better late than never.

Pretty much the only reason why SRH were in this game is because Williamson came in to bat so early due to the early loss of wickets. The current iteration of Pandey could have never done this. He couldn't take them over the line completely today but it is clear that he needs to be the number three in the games going forward.[DOUBLEPOST=1602610332][/DOUBLEPOST]

I think the current top seven is fine, just needs a repositioning of key personnel.

That boy Abdul Samad. He is a savage monster. IPL coaches are nothing less than baboons. They give 1-2-3 countless chances which is the easiest place to bat in T20's but they get fed up with 4-5-6-7 in two or three games where they have to come and look to bash it from ball 1. It's just nonsense.

I have no issue with JB. I think he deserves to open the batting for some franchise in the IPL as does Roy. But, not at SRH. Mohommad Nabi is an absolute gold chest on these tracks. Goswami has been a decent dasher at the top and would be an upgrade with the gloves on JB, specially against spin. At this point, if someone at SRH really had some b@lls, they would tell Warner that he needs to forget about the captaincy and bat like Warner and not Gambhir. That orange cap is useless if a batsman of his calibre is going at 125-130. He needs to bat like a free spirit because Williamson is there to repair the pipes if they start leaking. If not, get rid of him and play JB and SRH would have a readymade skipper in Williamson.

My personal line up after a word with Warner would be-

Warner (C)
Goswami
Williamson (It's criminal if Pandey bats ahead of him. It's a pathetic joke)
Pandey
Samad
Nabi
Rashid
Nadeem
Natarajan
Thampi
Sandeep

Please get rid of Khaleel. He is a sad excuse in the name of a fast bowler.

Finally, CSK got a heart warming game at the right time when they desperately needed the turn around or could've seen their playoff chances slipping to almost zero. Today, luck played a big part in us winning the toss and getting to bat first. This tournament has been about winning by batting first and good that CSK got to do it.

A big headache now would be for the next match - Tahir for Bravo? Bravo bowled a sensational final over, but he was majorly helped by a stunning over from Shardul in the 19th where he sniffed out SRH's chase. Karn Sharma was pretty poor today (he pissed Dhoni off at the end) and Piyush bowled just one over. With Jadeja finding his bearings with the ball, its time to bring Tahir in for Bravo and get back Jagadeesan for Karn. Next game is in Sharjah. Bravo is very risky to play there as he can disappear in small grounds. I would punt with Tahir. Despite that final over, Bravo was still lackluster with the ball and got a first ball duck. But I have a feeling CSK will play an unchanged side next game, which might not be bad since its in Sharjah. I just hope Piyush/Karn/Jadeja are ready for that pea sized ground.

Continue with the "Curran opening" experiment. I want to see how he goes in Sharjah. Would be interesting (fingers crossed)

CSK have carried forward their gameplay to the next level. They used to "take the game deep". Now they are starting to "take tournaments deep".

i still think CSK has to find a way to inject desperation into the minds of Watson and Rayudu when it comes to running between the wickets. Or just swap Watson and Faf's batting spots from today so that its likely that Watson and Rayudu are not running together. Was just watching Cricinfo's mid innings Time Out video (Deep Dasgupta and Ian Bishop) and they mentioned that in the first 13 overs, the dot ball percentage was 50%. Thats 6.3 overs for no runs. That is insane. It reiterates my comment from yesterday - Watson and Rayudu just SHOULD NOT be playing together. You need urgent legs, more so in the middle overs. Lucky today that we batted first when batting was easier. If we had chased today, it would've been the same old sad story!

I would not open with Curran in Sharjah unless they are chasing 190 or more. I think that track is somewhere both du Plessis and Watson can go some and it's harder to hit in the latter stages. They can float Sam Curran and 100% bat Jadeja 4/5 perhaps even ahead of MSD. Tahir should play everywhere. The game was over when Bravo bowled the final over and he got clattered before that. As I said, with their batting in such deep doldrums, they have no choice but to play either of Curran or Bravo and Sam has been their best player this IPL. I think Jadhav/Jagadeesan for Karn and Tahir for Bravo is all that is needed with Sam to float in the batting order.

The best balance scenario would actually be to play Faf/Watson (if they had Raina) and play Curran, Bravo and Tahir.

I love how these commentators will pick on first this many things and last this many things. "He has scored only x amount of runs in his last this many innings." The moment you take a peak at the cut off innings, it's generally when the player has done well. Manjrekar takes it to the next level. "In the last 7 innings he has only one score in double figures if you remove that hundred from two games back." Why? Was that hundred scored by aliens? There is a slang in hindi that starts with CH and it fits him to a tee.

I want to ask you- How would you separate Rayudu & Watson? CSK are not loaded with batters domestically or internationally. Watson was already out of place at 3. While the running between the wickets was poor, they also read the situation correctly and didn't lose their head looking for 200. They read the wicket superbly and for the first time, Rashid Khan had an overall poor 4 overs. Neither Rayudu, nor Watson looked troubled. You get something and you lose something in players. We Indians have a pathetic lust for batting insurance. What CSK made yesterday was par+8. All things considered, it was a match winning score. The missing ingredient from CSK has been their energy. All teams have strengths and weaknesses, so if the running between the wickets is poor they are also the only team in the league who are being considered a threat even before yesterday's game. It's because their cricketing smarts and experience just needs some rush or push. You can't have everything.

Oh my god!!! What has Prithvi Shaw done. He looked in no position at all to face the first ball. Don't know why all of a sudden he is heading towards a downfall. He is a fine young player, hope he finds his feet back soon.

Who could have known that handing the new ball to your best bowler who also happens to be one of the best T20 bowlers in the world would have paid back? Better late than never, I suppose.

To me, the running between wickets is proving to be crucial, more so when CSK chases. They got lucky that they batted first yesterday, but in the first 7 games, we often saw that batting is very challenging as the game progresses and teams batting second find it very hard to score boundaries. And by having this handicap of two poor runners between wickets, you are basically saying "we cant run and the boundaries are also hard to come by". It becomes a lottery then, and CSK have always ended up on the wrong side of it unless they get a poor bowling attack like that of Punjab.

Yesterday could've been very different had CSK chased. Rayudu struggled to hit boundaries against RCB and despite that 40 knock, he killed the chase for CSK. I know upcoming games might turn the tide in CSK favor and I might be made to look like a fool, but I stand by the opinion that you can at best have one poor runner if that runner is a consistent boundary hitting match winner. But having two guys like that pulls the team down.

Those two overs were a masterclass in death overs bowling from Kartik Tyagi. Kept Stoinis second guessing as to which line he was going to bowl and did not err on the length of any delivery. Superb stuff!

A single injury to Pant has made it a bit wobbly for DD with Hetmyer also sitting, with this team I doubt them finshing top 2.

MI
RCB
DC
RR

My top 4. And lock them!
