Indian Premier League - General Discussion

Prithvi
Shikhar
Rahane
Smith/Hetmyer
Pant
Stoinis
Ashwin
Axar/Mishra
Rabada
Nortje
Umesh/Ishant

Edit:

If Rahane or Prithvi fails with the bat, then this DC can go with this lineup

Prithvi/Rahane
Shikhar
Smith
Pant
Stoinis
Lalit Yadav
Ashwin
Axar/Mishra
Rabada
Nortje
Umesh/Ishant

Lalit Yadav scored 152 runs in 5 matches with an average of 152 and strike rate of 197 while batting at number 6 and took 7 wickets in SMAT 2021.

I wanted to incline towards him but he is not guaranteed a spot in the XI once Iyer returns. DC would field

  1. Prithvi Shaw
  2. Shikhar Dhawan
  3. Steven Smith
  4. Shimron Hetmyer
  5. Rishabh Pant
  6. Marcus Stoinis
  7. Axar Patel
  8. Ravi Ashwin
  9. Kasigo Rabada
  10. Ishant Sharma
  11. Mohit Sharma

Once Iyer is fit, Ishant Sharma drops out and Iyer comes in. If DC need faster bowler, Nortje comes in for Hetmyer/Stoinis. Again it would make no sense but this is the fact. I do not see a place for Rahane in the XI unless Shaw or Dhawan get injured.
Think the first overseas players DC will start with are Nortje, Rabada and Stoinis. Nortje and Rabada formed a successful partnership last season, which Delhi don't want to miss on. Rahane can get a chance at 3 and play as an accumulator with the the likes of Hetmyer and Pant to come. Smith does have a greater chance to play more matches since Iyer is injured but someone like Mohit Sharma has been pretty poor in the last IPL and in the domestic scene which prompts Nortje's selection over Smith.

I hope nothing gets politicize over this. I absolutely hate the big logos on cricketing jerseys. It takes away all the good the Jersey has.

So Shreyas Iyer is likely to miss the first half of the IPL. Rumor's are abuzz that Pant will lead DC which will be a shocking decision. I feel Ashwin or Shikhar should lead. Please do not hand over the captaincy to Smith. Ashwin was leading Punjab two seasons ago, so he should be the first choice. What are your thoughts guys?

I'm tilting towards Ashwin only for the fact that among the good captaincy contenders, he is the one guy who will always play all games. Rahane due to his gameplay, is not assured of a spot in all 14 games. Giving Smith the captaincy means DC are tied on their hands with one foreign spot. I feel DC would not want to burden Pant with captaincy right now. Dhawan is another candidate who can play all 14 games but to me, Ashwin might be a better candidate than Dhawan due to Ashwin's prior captaincy experience and his strategic skills.

No matter how much feedback they get, BCCI and IPL organizers will always put those ugly ass logos on the kit and make it bad. That "Gulf" logo has been bad for long and yet no change. Thankfully the Myntra one looks far better than the "Muthoot" one from last year.

The camouflage though looks elegant on the shoulders. I guess they chose the shoulders for the symbolism of "the army has been carrying the country on their shoulders" thing :D The camouflage makes the jersey look more Aussie, which in a way, I like it because Aussie jerseys are mostly very elegant looking...

One team that has not believed in constant jersey changes and even when they change, they make smart and minor changes. Gotta give it to CSK for that!

Ashwin seems like the best bet for them. He has the right mind as well. If not for Rahane and Sharma, he could easily have been our vice-captain. I may be wrong but I see no captaincy material in Pant. Also this IPL is going to be crucial for him. He still is proving himself as a player.

Pant is going to be a key player for DC this season. No reason why they need to burden him with captaincy, plus he isn't very experienced either compared to his teammates. Ashwin is by far the favorable option, Rahane is a very good candidate but Delhi will want to play Smith at some point, and playing Rahane and Smith at 3 and 4 respectively won't go down well in the middle overs. Ashwin is guaranteed to play all 14 games, barring injury.

Shreyas is set to miss the entire IPL (per TOI; official confirmation awaited). If yes, this is a huge blow for DC. He was starting to assert a very positive influence on the group and was a proper 'leader from the front'.

But good for him if he goes under the knife now and gets the surgery out of the way so that he has a chance at the T20 World Cup this year.

Pant was named as the vice-captain of sorts way back in 2018 if I'm correct (not sure if he did lead the side in those few games Shreyas missed). He has previously been a deputy but I have no idea of how his experience was. Dhawan isn't a good captain at all while Rahane isn't as good in white ball cricket with captaincy. Ashwin would seem to be the logical choice but he has a tendency to tinker too much. And despite Smith's good stats on paper, I don't see a good captain in him either.

I honestly think this is a tough call for Delhi to make and you can see why Pant is appealing a year before the big auction for bargaining with a retention at a cheaper price in exchange for a leadership role.

EDIT : A left field option I had not considered would be Prithvi Shaw. Massive risk but he does have ample experience and captaincy does bring the best out of him.

I had thought about Prithvi Shaw but given his mindset right now, I do not think its the best of the idea. Probably in near future, but not currently.

Weird and sadistic (probably), but I was kinda hoping Jaddu comes in late so that Sai Kishore could start the tournament and see if he made an impact. But now with Jaddu in, I fear SaiK will continue to be on the bench. I hope Dhoni takes a brave call of playing SaiK and Jaddu in a game where Jaddu is a pure batsman. Same with Santner too!

Faf arriving on March 26 means he is available for our first game against DC on April 10th. Ngidi arriving on April 4th means he won't be available for our first game. I think considering our death bowling concerns in past seasons, both Bravo and Curran should start against DC on April 10th.
