Indian Premier League - General Discussion

The massive chunk of the league's audience is going to be from India. I think they'll ensure that the games are held at the usual time slots, which could mean that there won't be any actual D/N game (SA is 3.5 hrs behind India) and all games will be day affairs. I think games will start at 12 noon SA time (for the day games) and at 4PM for the evening games.
We had a lot of D/N matches during 2009 IPL, 2010 CLT20 & 2012 CLT20. Till 2012, I only followed MI games. And missed all of them in 2012 CLT20 since they were all D/N matches and I had 7:30 am school.

They could have two groups of five. Top four qualify for the super 8s who all play each other twice and then the top three qualify for the super eliminator where they all play each other again twice. Then have the standard knock outs.
Like this idea though Super six would be more competitive. Top 3 qualify from each group.

2009 IPL was the second year of the league, when the BCCI was building up its popularity. At that time, asking for the league to be hosted in India primetime slots was likely not given importance. And with CLT20, its not just India's tournament but everyone's.

I think with the IPL at its current place, I've a feeling that BCCI will opt for Indian primetime slots (if its hosted by SA). I could also be wrong.

Been wondering of late why the IPL franchisees do not see Moises Henriques as a potential leadership option? He fills the gaps and can fit in seamlessly into most XIs as well

CSA has proposed to BCCI it would be cheaper to host IPL in SA compared to UAE. If IPL does not get played in India, it has to be played in SA. I am bored of the UAE pitches and win toss elect to bowl and win the match

To me Sri Lanka seems a more obvious choice.

I think the BCCI would want to host within India for obvious reasons. However if there are no crowds and no home/away games at all the team venues, then I feel it takes away a lot from the tournament.

I've a feeling that the IPL will happen with fans/audience in the stands. Whether its in India, or its in South Africa is to be seen.

This logic applies to the teams apart from the teams who have more than 3 titles. :p

Because you did not follow 2020 IPL?
Because I followed a semi boring 2020 IPL followed by another boring IPL in 2021 in India that was followed by more boring IPL in UAE again just to mint money which was followed by the most boring T20 WC in history of WC's. And no this is not because India lost, it is because it was boring!

We go back to 2014 IPL and the matches were all of a sudden very exciting. Pakistan played a lot of exciting contests in UAE for years. We also had Asia Cup which was actually a pretty competitive tournament. The problem wasn't UAE but the pitches that were used. Tough to get exciting games in Covid times.

From a purely cricketing perspective I find that differing conditions at different venues that play to the strengths of the home side make IPL more varied and interesting. Even in a long tournament different venues keep the matches varied. If you have most of the games at one or two venues regularly you are going to get a lot of similar pitches and similar matches.

UAE etc is best left for legends cricket, benefit/charity matches or bilateral series in the absence of home venue availability for whatever reason.

Looking at the names of the new team (and some of the older ones), the logos, etc.. I feel IPL has lot all its glamour and innovation. Lalit Modi was really good and without him its all lackluster. I remember a time when I was at one of the theatre's watching an IPL match live. The theatre too had cheer leaders dancing on boundaries sixes and wickets. I remember when we could watch IPL on Youtube. I remember when I used to get excited listening to anthems of teams as well as IPL.

That made what a product I used to love the IPL. Its all boring and routine. Does anyone miss the 2010-2015 IPL?

Like I said in another thread, the IPL itself ripped off a lot from the ICL rebel league and quite frankly I remember being embarrassed at how much the big bully BCCI copied from a rebel league with much less funding and facilities. Slowly this memory has faded from public memory. Lalit Modi simply copied a formula and added stuff on top. Seems a lot of people have forgotten.

BCCI only jumped on the T20 wagon after they saw the popularity of the rebel league and India’s World T20 win in 2007.
