Indian Premier League - General Discussion

Oh nos! It's Cummins again who makes an impact against MI. If not with the bat, then with the ball.

Let's talk about K.Pollard. I actually liked the intent he showed last night. It's another thing that he wasn't able to connect much, barring a six. He tried something different, advanced down the wicket to spinners, tried to hit almost every ball. But is it a case of too little too late?

I highly doubt that MI is gonna bench him this season for the sole reason that he was one of the retained players. They could go the "injured" route (if that's even a thing :p) but apart from that I don't see him not playing further matches. He is having a nightmarish IPL and this leads to the inevitable question - is he past his prime? His sell by date? I believe so. He is occupying a slot which Brewis can take up. MI gotta look ahead now. 2023 will be exciting for them but they need to make a few changes as well, starting with KP.

It's a sad state of affairs. He was one of the brighter spots in MI wins, his presence alone (still) makes most opposition captains break out in a cold sweat. But it's kind of hard to think he is gonna turn a new leaf.

I was wondering. If players of the national team are out of form, they should be sent to domestic circuit and have to perform to make a comeback. What about the captain?

If CSK indeed go to the auction looking for a captain if they look past Gaikwad (who has limited captaincy experience), guess there's only one man coming back:

seems intentional.

I am still on "Ruturaj" taking over someday, but an auction buy now seems increasingly likely. This Jadeja experiment failure might also make CSK think twice about giving Ruturaj the captaincy as they might think that he also might buckle under that pressure.

Hope they have finally realized that captaincy is a specialist skill by itself, and the best/senior player of the team does not necessarily need to be made captain unless he has the captaincy skill.

What interests me a lot about this whole situation (and to a certain extent some of the decisions by Mumbai) is how much involvement in recruitment do the captain's have? I've got to imagine Rohit and MSD are the two who would be most likely to have a sway.

That makes the fact Dhoni seemingly walked away on the eve of the tournament so odd. If he'd have stepped down earlier (maybe, behind the scenes he did) would the squad have looked so similar?

Gaikwad has the potential to be India captain, not just CSK. He has a fantastic attitude and a very mature/wise head on his shoulders.

I think there will be a lot of competition between him and Gill to open for India once Rohit calls time on T20. But, considering how Indian cricket has evolved over the last five years I expect Shaw to be groomed alongside Rahul.

There is nothing wrong with Chennai or MSD or the franchise. We completely ignore the blow MI and CSK have taken with Archer and Chahar. I don't think many franchises would do too well if their gun players got injured. MI, to a large extent have still been messy with the chopping and changing but CSK by and large have been OK. I think they would have HAD TO give Jadeja the role at some point. He's a senior pro and a world class all rounder. I personally would have had Gaikwad already take over but I think CSK still believe they can qualify. Won't be surprised if Gaikwad does take over once that is a mathematical conclusion that they cannot.
I think they are missing a gun international quick which I think will be Sam Curran next year but overall they're still a very very good team. FFS, MSD is batting like it's 2015 again!

Would call it optimism to think of India opening with KLR. Personally I want to see him open but it's been quite a while he has batted over there.

I think Shaw opening for India would very much be like Jason Roy opening for England. If only KLR can become India's own version of Jonny Bairstow or even better (I feel he does have better temperament/talent than Johnny Bairstow).

I don't know where would you fit Ruturaj but I must agree that he should've played for India already considering his consistency & maturity that he showed with the A-side.

Strong rumors that Jadeja is ruled out for the remaining games of this season that CSK will play! If its true, it has come a full circle for him where he started off as the "next captain" to take CSK forward, and then coming down to giving up his captaincy and then being ruled out of the season.

In a way, this will be good for Jadeja as staying with the team after all he has gone through, can be counterproductive. He can benefit from leaving the bubble, resting himself and focusing on the international games coming up. Pretty confident he'll return back to CSK next year as a completely different guy.

If Dhoni does not retire before next season, tough to see where CSK can get the money to buy Sam! If they release Chris Jordan, they get back 3.6 crores. Add that to the purse they retained last year (2c) they would have just around 6 crores left. Sam and Stokes might go for big money in a mini auction.

Ravichandran Ashwin as a pinch-blocker is something I thought I'd never see, but here we are.
I am quite surprised with this move by RR to promote Ashwin for the most part of the tournament. They've clearly under utilised Riyan Parag this season.

Kind of feels like B McCullum is secretly apart of RR this season, considering the number of times they're playing musical chairs with their batting lineup. Even though Ashwin scored a 50 today, feel that him batting 3 only minimizes the impact of Samson at 3, arguably the more destructible player once he's in.

Their lineup has bizarre imbalances this season, having top order bats from 1-5, while their tail essentially starts at 5 down with Ashwin not being a accomplished finisher (evidenced with the top order promotions) with your genuine number 11's after him. They've made it work somehow this season though.

Well it has been since 2020.

Remember Ben Stokes opening and even smashing a ton in that season and they had Uthappa, Samson, Jaiswal , Buttler playing musical chairs in that season.

Heck I even remember Smith opening in few games as well.

CSK will be fine. Theekshana has been a huge find for them and I expect him to create havoc once we go to 2023 and Chepauk. Conway looks like the typical CSK cricketer who is either not recognised in world cricket or considered past it. I think they have a very very reliable cricketer in Pretorius and I expect him to really learn a lot at CSK and become a death bowler. I think what they truly lack is a gun fast bowler to compliment Chahar and Pretorius. I honestly no longer see the benefit of Bravo. OK, if he was Indian or you could play 5 foreigners then I get the drift but to just play him because he bowls slower balls is going to have it's shelf life.
